Under Construction

Posted on 2002/03/06 15:21:21 (March 2002) by rob.

Why do people put 'Under Construction' everywhere? If it's not ready, don't upload it. One of my pet hates.

How many times have you been to a site which has promised 'whizz bang' stuff with huge graphics and all sorts of bonuses at the click of a mouse only to find that most of it is not there? Why is it that web designers feel that it is good practise to have a menu system with hundreds of entries, only to have half of them be non-existent? You are enticed into sites that promise so much, often to find that all that is really there is a number of empty pages with headings.

So, why do it? Well, you could say that laying out the pages before you do the actual content allows the design to be more cohesive. Also, the design of the site quite often requires that all the links have some sort of page at the end of it or they just won't work. Also, you could argue that it is easier to have the pages and then fill them in. In theory, I do all of this. However, I leave the webpage on my machine at home and test it before putting it onto the web at large. This way, I do not have huge sites with people hunting around for the content.

What's wrong with it? Frankly, it's rude. These sites say 'GET FREE IMAGES' but the 'images' page is still under construction. It's like false advertising, which is illegal. If you advertise a book and say that it is cunning story of intrigue (etc etc) and really it is a love story with the ending missing it would bomb big style. Huge court case, people loosing their jobs and going to jail, women crying and electric hedgehogs. You have wasted your time because the facet you were really interested in was not actually included and the book didn't really have an ending.

So, it's a waste of time too. Only a short amount of time wasted, but a waste nonetheless. If you add up all the time you spend going to these damn incomplete sites, then you realise you've wasted a hours looking a pages that promise so much more than they offer. Even worse is those people who have a huge graphic to tell you that it is under construction. You wait for ages and then realise there is sod all there. A total waste of bandwidth, time and money.

Web designers, sort it out. Complete it, then upload it.

I totally agree, however, looking at your section of the 'maison currently, aren't you kind of guilty of this sort of thing:

~New Bodge is coming~
It's only a matter of time.
