Names of Electronic ProductsPosted on 2002/09/09 14:10:14 (September 2002) by john. How about ones that actually make sense...?
If I ever own my own electronics business, I'm going to give the products sensible names, lake Dave, Brian and Geoff. I get really frustrated by all those letters and numbers they usually end up getting, things like the Megatek N30701 KL, or the Omnitel JP5840KJD . WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Then you go and find bafflingly the N65226 GD is a far superior model, for no apparent reason. Or the company tacks XD on the end because it's got an extra 484 B90 unit with it. Or that your SPZ6047 is actually called a JSN8462 everywhere else in the world. Or you can't get parts for your GFJ340987 because it's obsolete and the new model, the GFJ340999, although looking identical and behaving in exactly the same way is obviously utterly incompatible. Or your Pharookioid GH4422 is in fact a rebadged LKK3372 that is really manufactured by Muggley-Toknyharsomonkey Inc. Or you ordered a XKC4532 but owing to an administrative error (they couldn't read your handwriting) you got a XKC4533. The first being an egg whisk, the second a giraffe incubator. JUST STOP IT, OK?! If you must use numbers they're going to have to mean something. Is it so difficult to have number 1 the first one you make? Do you have to start at 20638 and then piss about backwards and forwards from there...? Do you have to add on meaningless increments of 554...? Isn't 1 is a perfectly sensible value to go up by...? Have some common sense for god's sake!

My Grandad told me about the Navy ordering system that he had to use at the time. He worked designing RADAR in the war and stayed on afterwards... anyways, he told me he once wrote down the wrong number on a order form thinking that he was ordering a pack of resistors or something. Imagine his delight when a transporter arrived carring a large missile... "Sign here please..."
I don't think he got the warhead though.

Actually. That may explain what that odd thing in his garage was.
