SupermarketsPosted on 2003/01/21 13:33:56 (January 2003) by john. Some pointless rambling about grocery stores.
Worried that I haven't posted anything for a while, I decided to write an article about the first thing that came into my head; supermarkets. I'm not giving any guarantees about how interesting this article might be, but I've decided to rank UK supermarkets in order of my own personal preference. So here goes:
- Waitrose
- Sainsbury's
- Tesco
- Marks and Spencer
- Budgens
- Co-op
- Somerfield
- Morrison's
- Safeway
- Kwik Save
- Asda
I based this ranking on an imaginary scenario in which all of the above were on the same street, and I had to decide which to go in. Waitrose gets the pole position. Despite being a tad pricey, the food available is just simply very nice, and lots of the kinds of things I like eating are only really available there. Sainsbury's and Tesco are probably on a sort of a par for me, although traditionally Sainsbury's has a bit more of a quality image, as opposed to the value image of Tesco. Marks and Spencer gets a fairly high spot because of their move towards selling only free range eggs, which I think is a very good step in the right direction, although other than that I've not really shopped there too often so I don't have much of an opinion. I have a soft spot for Budgens as this was my nearest supermarket in Hampstead, although they're generally more like large convenience stores than supermarkets really. The Co-op gets a reasonably good rating despite having usually fairly bland food on offer through loyalty to my working class roots, and because of their good business ethics, which I really appreciate. Somerfield is my current nearest supermarket, and has risen in my opinion recently because of this - it wasn't as bad as I thought. Morrison's, in fairness I've hardly ever been too as we don't have them down South. Safeway is the best of the grottiest three, they do seem to make a fair effort in the vegetarian lines, which I appreciate, but in general the atmosphere is slightly reminiscent of an upmarket Asda. Kwik Save, erm, I need not say anything. Asda I just plain hate with a passion, even more so now it is owned by domineering American capitalists.

Personally I think Tesco is better than Sainsbury's.

Morrison's is for 'dirty people' That should be read in a: "James, Pot Noodle is for dirty people," fashion.
Hmmm, and I can't believe you put ASDA last! You filthy heathen! They employ old people to stand at the door and hand out baskets! Spare a moments thought for what other activites those old folks would be otherwise engaged in: pissing on chairs and blocking Post Office doorways! That's what!
Grrr, to you and your rating system! M&S pisses all over the sweaty flanks of Sainsbury's from a very great height! Although Tesco is 'nice'.

Thanks for your input, but you won't change my mind on Asda. It's a stinking pit of banality and I hate it.

Saisnburys is by far the best supermarket in the nation! Okay, they have been a bit slow since, well the eightes, but are now constantly rebranding. In my local store, thousands of new products are available- and they have closed the cafe in place of homewares. I would love to see a Sainsbury hypermarket, a modern Savacentre, where the quality of their food is shown on a huge scale. I am a loyal Sainsburys shopper, although will be caught regurlarly in Waitrose and Marks and Spencer. Beleive me, I feel sorry for my cupboards!

Sainsbury's is not a nice place to work, they have no interest in the majority of their staff. They removed all the benefits that staff once had. The managers do little work and reap all the benefits. We gave Sir Peter Davis a fortune after he ran the company into the group. Made loadds of people and continuing to make people redundant just to keep the share price up. Outsoucred our IT to Accenture paid them a fortune for a service that could only be described as laughable at best, then took the IT back in house. Sainsbury's have no idea and just borrow / steal other companies ideas. We lost number one spot because we didn't know our market. Well done to Sainsburys
