The Greyhound InnPosted on 2003/02/01 14:22:04 (February 2003) by john. Great looking pub with excellent food.
Last weekend Chie and I were having a bit of a wander, and decided to pop in to The Greyhound Inn, in Tidmarsh, for a quick drink. I'd seen it several times before, and was intrigued by the lovely thatched roof, but had never previously been in. We had been missing a treat. The interior is great too, low beamed roof and the epitomy of old English pub atmosphere. Absolutely marvellous. As it happened to be round about lunchtime, and the food menu looked very interesting, we thought we'd also give their Sunday lunch a go.
The Sunday lunch menu is handed out on seperate sheets, and gives the impression that it is revised every week, which in my opinion is a very good sign. I was surprised to find on there a very interesting sounding vegetarian option, which I decided to go for, and Chie went for the roast beef.
It took quite a while to turn up, but it was well worth the wait. This is almost certainly the best vegetarian Sunday lunch I have ever had in a pub. Quite possibly the best pub food I have ever had. The first area in which they scored points was in the trimmings. My meal had all the roast potatoes and vegetables you'd expect, just with the meat and gravy removed. This for me is great - too often have I sat enviously watching my dining companions enjoy roast potatoes and so on, whilst I have been relegated to a meal consisting of just pasta. Whereas I love pasta very dearly, it has its place, and that place is not Sunday lunch. The actual centrepiece of the meal was quite superbly made. It was spinach and mushrooms in a creamy sauce wrapped in filo pastry, served on a bed of a tomato based sauce. It was very well made and utterly delicious. It seemed to fit perfectly with the rest of the roast meal, a great idea, and one I'm pretty sure I'll be copying at some point in my own cooking at home.
For dessert we shared a spotted dick in custard, which was jolly nice too. I'm sure I recall my Dad a while back lamenting the lack of cake and custard type desserts in restaurants. I think he would really like this place.
All in all it was excellent - my only slight criticism would be the price - it was a bit expensive perhaps, especially by pub food standards, but then I did really enjoy it so it seemed worth it.

Around neuf of your English pounds for just a main course, or 13 quid for a main course with dessert.

Yeah... bit pricey, but… ‘better to spend more on something you like than spend less on something you don’t’… unless one is skint of course.
