St. Moritz

Posted on 2003/03/07 09:20:07 (March 2003) by john.

All the cheesey goodness of Switzerland.

Last night Chie and I wanted to go out for dinner, but go for something a bit out of the ordinary. After a bit of wandering around Soho, we ended up deciding to eat in the St. Moritz Restaurant. I have visited Switzerland once, but just for a few hours, so this was in effect my first taste of Swiss food.

Perhaps not surprisingly there are strong influences of French, German and a bit of Italian. Swiss cuisine seems to be a happy melting pot (or perhaps fondue pot) of all of these types of food, and certainly (in St. Moritz at least) they are blended together to great effect.

I started with Champignons Sauvages, an expensive but good sized and very tasty plate of wild mushrooms with (what seemed like) a wine sauce. Chie had a sausage salad type of thing, which she didn't like so much. For the main course I had something along the lines of Rosti aux Legumes, a potato cake with vegetables and gratine of swiss cheese, which was really superb - very satisfying. Chie had a Stroganoff which she said was very good (and made up for the slight disappointment in the starter). We had a side order of Spatzli, some kind of noodles, which were very nice. I think they'd flavoured them with cinammon, which was interesting... For dessert we shared a chocolate truffle cake, which was OK, but in fairness I was probably too full to appreciate it properly. Drinks wise, Chie had a glass of white wine (which I guess was fine, but she didn't comment on), and I enjoyed a couple of very small, but very refreshing Swiss Mountain beers.

All in all, very good. We were in the downstairs bit which was a bit pokey and quite noisy - Chie found that a little bit irritating but I didn't mind too much. Overall it seemed a bit expensive (it seems like I always say that) - just under 60 quid for two, but then I suppose that's just the nature of central London restaurants. At least it was a bit different!

The St. Moritz Restaurant is on Wardour Street in London.
