United Kingdom, Nil Points

Posted on 2003/05/24 23:19:48 (May 2003) by john.

Does that mean everyone hates us?

Well, it looked like I was in vaguely the right ball park with my predictions for who was going to win Eurovision - I got the first two right at any rate, just not in the correct order. Turkey won, and I think Russia came second. Belgium, a surprisingly high scorer (I didn't see that coming admittedly) were jostling around the top spot during a lot of the voting, but were just nudged down to third place at the end. Austria did fairly well - I think they ended up 6th or 7th.

What I hadn't anticipated was the score the UK got. Nil points! I've never seen that before. We came utterly last. Bugger all. Not a sausage. Not a single other country voted for us, and we were the only country this year to finish with absolutely zero. Terry Wogan was postulating this was a post-Iraq conflict backlash. In other words, the UK is currently the least popular country in Europe. Alternatively, it could be that Jemini were terrible, but in fairness to them, they didn't seem significantly worse than most of the other acts.

So it looks like everybody hates us. Well thanks a lot Tony, I hope you're pleased with yourself!

I tried uploading a movie of good old Alf Poier humourously complaining about Eurovision, but it doesn't seem to want to download properly.

I'm proud to see use scoring zero! It would have been a dreadful defeat if we'd not been alone at the bottom of the table ... and for a while it looked like Latvia might be joining us. But at the end, they finally got a vote, and we held the nil-point trophy alone! It's enough to make yer chest swell with pride. Oh yes. I liked the song about the 80s coming back, and that Greek woman left me wishing for a pair of scissors ...

John, your video downloads absolutely fine. If the video won't play, it's probably because you've not got a DivX decoder. You can get this for free from DivX.com. Sadly, the free version installs some nasty snoop-ware on your computer, so it might be advisable to use an old version of DivX. If you want, I can send you the installer. Failing that, it's on my Dungeon CD, in the pit (try the 4.12 installer).

Ner, Ner-ner-ner, ner! George Bush wears womens underwear! Oh yes he does. When he's sitting at his table in the oval office, he's got stockings on underneath (or should I say "Pantyhose" so you stupid american people can understand).

I'll get you for that one Osama!

Oh yeah? There are plenty more aeroplanes where those ones came from! My pilots are in training right now! And one more thing, George, what's with the continually-surprised facial expression? It really does you no favours!

Oooh! That does it! I'm sending a crack squad of commandos RIGHT NOW! Tony! Bring the guys ...

Righty-ho, George. Whatever you say!

I didn't expect the majority of that.

P.S. Duncan - I can play the movie back fine - I re-encoded it using DivX myself. The trouble is it won't actually download for me, although I have the original on my hard drive so it doesn't matter. It's a bit odd, it seems to always get stuck after the first 5% or so. Still, so long as it works for everyone else, that's fine!

Jemini were pretty crap. She sang flat and he looked like an arse.

Yeah, but apparently their monitors were tuned off. I think it was an act of sabotage by the french. Speaking of sabotage and frenchmen ... isn't the summer solstice on a Satuday this year? Who's gonna go to stonehenge? I know John's only been recently (as we can see from his pics) but I've never been on the actual day itself, so I'm considering making the trip. Anyone else enthused?

I've often thought about going to Stone Henge on the summer solstice. However, I'm not sure what would actually be happening when you got there - is it just the normal pay five quid and walk round for half an hour with an audio guide...?

I've found some pictures, if that helps.
