SakePosted on 2003/06/16 23:05:48 (June 2003) by john. Why is it not more popular?
I think I recall vaguely Tom writing an article about the same thing at some point.
He has a habit of getting there first.
I was drinking sake this evening. As an aside, I am having trouble here as I am using a Japanese laptop, so my argument may not be as convincing as usual, given that some of my characteristic punctuation is more or less impossible.
Anyway, I have felt it necessary to relay to the world just how great sake is. I have drank a lot of conventional wines in my time and have come to the very objective conclusion that wine is just plain crap compared to sake.
So there.

"So there." The refining point in any arguement... Hmmm, anyways, i'd agree with you but I seem to recall a night where you tried to kill me with sake.

I am a bit unsettled by the concept of coming in to work in the morning, checking my website, and finding changes I don't remember making from the night before.

Russ - what do you mean I tried to kill you with sake? As in, I tried to make you drink enough to kill you? Or are you referring to our bout of wrestling in the middle of the road and trying to imply that was somehow sake fuelled...?

I'll opt for clause A and B. Sake poisoning and sake fueled rage. Although the warm sake was rather nice.
Email. Sending email when you're drunk's the worse thing. I've sent some terrible things in the past. Especially via that damn friends reunited place...

Sake is indeed extremely nice. However, I find it far too easy to drink, which makes it far more painful the next day. You wouldn't gulp down a bottle of wine at that rate, would you? But sake just seems to vanish ...

I know what you mean Jimmy. More often that not I've got bored of a bottle of wine before it's finished. In Japan, there is a custom that you never refill your own glass/cup - someone else should always do it for you, and preferably before you've finished. This makes it a lot more difficult to keep track of how fast you're drinking.

As for the original question "Why is it not ore popular" ... this is probably due to ignorance. Most people don't know what it is, and it usually takes a few tries before you like it. You gotta admit, it is something of an "Acquired taste". You're not going to tell me you loved it immediately, are you?!?!?

Don't know about sake, as I haven't tried it yet. But sushi I love. Been on a sushi binge for the last couple of weeks since trying to make it for the first time. I'll see about finding a shop that sells sake. I assume it goes well with sushi?

Oddly enough, I think it's not "officially" done to drink sake with rice-based food, because you're "having rice twice". You have it before or after the meal, I think.

There may be some truth in what Mark is saying there. Sake is a great appetiser, it goes really well just before a meal, and always makes me really hungry (in a good way). However I like it so much I generally want to continue drinking throughout the meal.

Drink it in the bath. Then try to stand up ...

A particular favourite of mine too. It's always good to have a bicycle or foot pump to hand, so you can expel any unwanted water from your lungs afterwards.
