AlcoholPosted on 2004/10/15 09:07:21 (October 2004) by john. How important is it?
I was having one of those pub conversations in the 'Keys last night with Mike about the role alcohol plays in our society, etc. I made the rather bold claim that alcohol was pretty much vital to our way of living, that most people (myself included) couldn't really enjoy themselves to their full potential without having had at least a bit to drink. Sad as this may sound, I think we all need to be honest with ourselves - most of us are not as confident, funny, outgoing and likeable as we would like to be, and we at least think that we improve in all of these respects after drinking.
As an example of this, I put forward the argument that most of what I would consider to be the best days of my life have had alcohol involved, and probably wouldn't have been quite so great if they hadn't. A few examples, in no particular order: - My 23rd birthday.
- Graduation day.
- My brother's wedding.
- Me and Chie in La Rochelle.
- New Year's Eve on Exmoor.
- Me and Vera in North Berwick.
Not a single one of these great days was a dry event, and, although you may argue that most of them were great for other reasons than simply the alcohol involved, I'm pretty confident that the alcohol played a significant factor in making them as good as they were.
I have often heard people say "I don't need alcohol to enjoy myself", and then proceed to drink at just about every special occasion and social gathering they attend. So, errr, why are you bothering...? I guess what I'm really trying to say is, let's stop kidding ourselves, accept that we are very imperfect creatures, and accept that we need booze to at least fool us into thinking we are the people we'd really like to be. Once we have got over this somewhat self-obsessive hurdle we are then able to relax and socialise, and actually have a good time.

Sure alcohol is weird. It makes cow tipping fun and sure does make my sister look purty but it dont do my banjo playing no good.
