Cockernhoe and CatlowdyPosted on 2005/09/02 16:43:15 (September 2005) by john. A couple more additions to Douglas Adams' classic dictionary.
I've recently thought of a couple more Meaning of Liff-isms which I thought I ought to write down before I forget.
Catlowdy
The awkward feeling which occurs when walking over a floor which is in the process of being cleaned. An individual experiencing Catlowdy may attempt to compensate with a mixture of tiptoeing, walking ineffectualy round the edges of the room, and by making apologetic gestures towards the cleaner.
Cockernhoe
The sensation that you are still wearing a hat, even after taking it off. It is a little known fact that in medieval times, minimising Cockernhoe was an important part of the art of hat making. A law passed in 1432 decreed that all hats must have a "Cockernhoe index" specified on the label. It was generally believed that tall pointy hats, as often worn by princesses, caused very little Cockernhoeing, which contributed to their high price, and generally elevated social status.
