I now have a deep seated hatred of Epson products, after my brush with their 'rip you off as much as possible for ink' and 'crappy paper transport mechanism' printer product. I wouldn't buy hardware from them again.

Someone at work also suggested the CanoScan - apparently he managed to get one for 50ish quid (I think it was a slightly different model to yours Jon)... I don't really need very high resolutions - I'm scanning pictures to go on the web - I'd be more than happy with 1280 x 960 from standard sized photos. I was also thinking of doing a CD version of the Radstock picture archive to save on download time - if anyone wants a copy let me know!

dsp

John Hastings: I've just got a canonScan 1220U. It's a U.S.B. scanner with wicked resolutions. It doesn't have it's own power supply, so It needs either a USB Hub or a proper USB 1.1 connection on your P.C. It's about 125 quid. Which ain't bad. I've also just bought an Epson, which I've got to test out and install this weekend (It was about 80 Quid). I'll tell you what that one's like. You'll like the canon though. it is wafer thin (said as if John Cleese).

- Fri Jan 25 13:49:18 2002

I think that , and no offense intended, people are unaware that the maison-de-stuff has databases which run on it currently. The only thing is that those databases are written in Access. Which are very well written databases and perhaps all we would have to do is a weekly compact on them. The access engine itself is extremely fast on this machine. We get this for free. So why not use it. The only thing is that we would have to change the driver to an ADO one. Of course the databases probably are as good as they are because the person who has coded the calls to the databases is in fact, the one and only.... Mr. Timothy John Hastings.

I really liked the look of scoop, but it seems to need mySQL as always, as did slashcode which also looked nice. I really want to use something big and well-maintained, as if we put all our content in something that turns out to be flawed and is abandoned by the developers, it'll be a big waste of time.

Graf <graf@altavista.net>
- Thu Jan 24 16:17:07 2002

I'm pretty sure I can download something off the web that does all of this already without any SQL...
John
- Thu Jan 24 15:59:26 2002

Right, here's my user requirements document.
I want to be able to:

  1. Have user profiles. Anyone can sign up and have a username, password, status, email address etc etc. These can be edited later by the user or an administrator.
  2. Users will either be administrators (e.g. one of us), trusted users (e.g. people that we know have posted good stuff in the past) or plebs (e.g. rowanboy).
  3. Everyone should be able to post articles. Potentially if they are not an administrator or trusted user it gets posted to us for moderation first, and, if we like it, it is then submitted. Moderation is more to make sure articles don't have bad HTML or broken links than anything else really.
  4. Articles can be edited at a later date by either the author, or an administrator.
  5. It would be nice if articles could be sorted into categories - general news, technology, humour, web related, film reviews, rants and so on.
  6. Everyone should be able to write feedback on an article, possibly in a multi threaded kind of way. We might consider moderating this as well, although probably it's not worth it - I'm quite happy for people to tell us we're talking utter crap.
  7. The title and a summary of new articles should appear on the main page. Possibly this could be filtered in some way - maybe only administrators' articles would make it to the main page. Eventually articles need to be removed from here - I'm happy to just keep with the n (say 10) most recent. This should all be totally automatic.
  8. All content must be thoroughly searchable.
  9. All content must be linkable - i.e. every article or bit of feedback should have a unique URL.
  10. Optional email notification of some sort - for example, administrators might need notifying if there is an article waiting to be moderated.
  11. The look and feel should be consistent. Either by going with roughly the current look of the 'maison, or by redesigning the rest of the site to fit.

Jon E
- Thu Jan 24 14:55:27 2002

Slashdot as in slashdot.org. Apparently this style of thing is called a "weblog". News to me. I really don't want to have to write the scripts myself (no time, too many other things to work on), but all the ready-written downloadable ones want to use bloody SQL, which we can't run on our servers without paying for.
John
- Thu Jan 24 14:54:03 2002

Of course having an A.S.P. developer and a V.B./A.S.P. (Tim) would probably be useful. Anything you want created just say, and It can / will be done. Might even do it off a database. WOW.

We could have a cool page (external) too. Stuff what we like. After a certain number of days, the script could kill off old ones, keeping it neat.

Mike's aunt is a good laugh Simon, and the monster truck is pretty cool - maybe she'll let you drive it if you ask nicely!
John

Mike: Hmm....the badger is OK but you won't be able to park a mini within a mile of my flat. It's a kind of negative parking situation.
Simon

John

Simon

The sum total of my knowledge of nail polish remover is :
1. You use it for removing nail polish usually
2. It has a very strong smell
3. You can use it to remove sticky residue left by labels etc but CAREFUL! it may dissolve some plastics.

News Break:........

Shiteness started in Cheltenham at 6:24 this morning, and has since travelled down to West Swindon, where it seems to have stayed. It is thought that it will travel back northly up to Cheltenham Tonight.
Fears that the Shiteness storm cannot be dispelled might be unfounded as scientists are hoping that consumation of alcohol might disperse the clouds.
A leading scientist in this field, Dr. Dre, is calling for volunteers. "Yo Bitch.
Please could someone try to have a beer,
So we can remove our fear
That the storm is hear for a year.
In the house.
Dr. Dre's dead.

We've had problems with building release versions of stuff on 2000 at work. I think the standard dlls are different or something. We now have a standard build machine that we build all the releases on - and that is running nt4.
