Beg to differ, Mr. Lang. I prefer Like a Stone to Cochise :) I've recently downloaded some Smiths...and a fine tune by Blur. Any of you seen the flick "24 hour party people"? I'd not heard of it but it seems like a British flick. Everyone's British in it. It's about the club, Factory, formerly in Manchester.

rowanboy
- Tue Jan 28 16:14:40 2003

T-Boy, like a stone is actually not their first single. Cochise is. And it is by far the best on the album!

The only things I would change would be to increase the contrast, bring out the red of the phone box a bit. To make the text a bit stronger, either make it bold or 'stroke' a line around it. Most paint packages can do this and you'll notice I do it a lot!
Rob Lang

Nice mate, much better. However, less stylish. May I recommend you lose the two vertical black bars either side. Also, your header repeats in a wide monitor. It's a lot more bland than your old site, which I don't like. Also, the colours are little off. You can try http://www.colormatch.dk/ for some matching colours. Also, the header looks like it's just slapped on and doesn't really fit with the rest of the site. Don't like the way the LJ loads into the iframe like that. Also, the iframe could stretch to the bottom of the screen. Sort of prefer your old site, even though it was less information driven.

The operation was a success, and thankfully they did it all through the keyhole method. Secondly, visits would be much appreciated over the next two weeks. Indeed. Milk, and cheese the biproduct of Hamburgers.
Rob Lang
- Tue Jan 14 11:34:44 2003

I'm not sure that statement is entirely true. Firstly, of course, milk which comes from cows has to go through a secondary processing phase before it becomes cheese. Secondly, I'm not totally sure biproduct (or by-product) is the word your looking for: by-product, n.
  1. Something produced in the making of something else.
  2. A secondary result; a side effect.

Duh! Then they would be Jaffa Biscuits! Could it be any clearer?
dsp
- Mon Jan 13 14:12:45 2003

Sounds like a more expensive pastime though. I paid 99p for my digestives, and I must have got over 30 of them. Jaffa cakes are more like a quid for 12. Anyway, technically, are jaffa cakes really biscuits?
John
- Mon Jan 13 14:07:33 2003

12 digestives is still pretty good going. Now, try a record for eating Jaffa Cakes and you'll probably get higher values. Oh, and my earlier post was supposed to say 'completely *random* interest', not 'completely interest'. As in, I do actually have some interests other than whether or not John has seen Ring. ;)
Mark
- Mon Jan 13 13:30:17 2003

Yes, I've definitely now reached the biscuit event horizon. I did alternate with a rich tea just now, which helped slightly, but still, I can't see me being able to eat any more digestives for a while. I may have damaged my record attempt - I assume the biscuit identity has to remain consistent contiguously throughout the run in any kind of record breaking feat involving biscuits. Consider, if you will, the jacobs cream cracker challenge. This would become an absolute farce if people were allowed to insert hob nobs, or god forbid, jaffa cakes, willy nilly inbetween cream crackers.
John
- Mon Jan 13 11:47:28 2003

Biscuit fatigue has definitely set in. I am floundering around the 9 or 10 mark.
John

What's the maximum quantity of digestive biscuits any of you has eaten in a day...? I'm currently aiming for 12, which may be my personal best.
John
- Mon Jan 13 11:15:35 2003

Nope I haven't. I've not really seen a great deal of Japanese films. The only ones that come to mind are Battle Royale, which was probably the most disturbing film I've ever seen (I think this was the intention) and Gohatto, a film about gay samurai, which was excellent.
John
- Mon Jan 13 09:12:38 2003

Rob Lang

Ah. There we go - fasthosts charge 25 quid + vat a month (very steep!) for use of a MS SQL server... On the other hand they charge 50 quid + vat a year for use of a MySQL server. They make out that it's best to use MS SQL with Windows 2000 servers (as all of ours currently are), and MySQL should be used for linux domains (I don't think we have any of these yet). However, I would imagine this is just a recommendation, and not a fixed requirement.
John

Rob: we don't have complete control over our domains - we can't install our own software, at least not to my knowledge... Oh, yea, just to be geeky. Haiku are 5-7-5, BUT the first line has to mention a season, and the second line has to have a 'shock' or 'stopping point' at the end. So the pattern is "blah blah Summer blah, blah blah blah blah blah blah OUCH, blah blah blah blah blah". If it doesn't follow that, but is 5-7-5, then it isn't a haiku but is something else in Japanese that means 'not quite a haiku'.

Tom, I tried but I failed. I thought good old cygwin would be able to do a build, but I couldn't get it to work... Don't you have a linux box you could run it on? Wouldn't that be easier?

John, you don't have a win32 build of Gnokii, um, built do you? I don't have a windows compiler... I could spend hours sorting one out, or then I could ask one of my mates (ie: you) who compiles stuff all the time......... I have an 8210 and cable all lined up an connected!

That's brilliant John!! However, I'm very disappointed that given your Japanese knowledge you didn't recognise my effort as a shining example of that most elegant form of poetry, haiku. Your poem definitely kicks my poem's ass though - well done!

Tom (or anyone else): if you do have a suitable phone with a data cable, you might want to have a play around with gnokii or something similar for doing stuff with SMS... I was hoping to use this as the basis for the SMS gateway.

Hi everyone, Happy New Year and all that, and welcome back to John after his Japan Jaunt. I had a friend tell me the other day that I might get depressed if I don't go to Japan myself, which I'm sure made at least some sense, but I've been cut off from that area recently as the Japanese course has been cancelled during the holidays so the only vaguely Japanese thing I did over the holidays was to watch Ringu (which was nowhere near as scary as everyone (including my Japanese teacher) says it is - creepy and tense, yes (which is still pretty good), but scary nope.) (I suppose it probably didn't help that I watched it with Raj, but I won't repeat any of his comments because they'd spoil the film for anyone who hasn't seen it.) Well, can't say much else at the moment, so I'll just leave you with a thing I read in the Staff Handbook for Brookes that left me distinctly impressed: "The problem with bad academic writing is that it's infectious. You read it, and don't understand it, so you feel stupid; and you then try and disprove that stupidity by writing your next paper in just as complex a way. Many excellent, clear, and concise explanations have been avoided or deleted by their own authors because they 'sounded too primitive or childlike'." I think that's brilliant, and the worst thing is, I've seen it happen.
Mark
- Mon Jan 6 15:41:12 2003

Yes here I am again in old blighty... Although it almost doesn't make any difference in terms of my presence on the 'maison... Thanks again for the lift Tom! Sorry again about not going to the pub last night - I was asleep myself within ten minutes of sending that last message! Is tonight any good for a rematch? Anyone else feel like joining in...?

Actually that's not quite right Tom - I was looking at the wrong time. The flight gets in at 16:10 on Sunday... However, I guess it'll take about another half an hour after that to get through customs and security and so on. So, around 16:45 I guess we should be ready to leave the airport.
