And yes I am being over defensive! This is my baby here, and its very important for me to actually do something worthwhile for once rather than the chicken shit outfit my phd has turned into.
John

It's actually bloody efficiently written and has a load of maths in it to delay image loading until absolutely necessary. For example, you can do any arbitrary series of transformations and it works out internally what the corresponding compound transformation is. This is not that easy! Can you tell me what a transpose followed by a horizontal flip followed by rotating 90 degrees followed by a transverse is equivalent to? I bloody well can't! But my program can. So it doesn't actually have to transform the image as it goes along, just records and updates an offset from the original transformation. Then when you choose save it does the transformation file - to - file without ever decompressing the main image into a bitmap. This is bloody awkward to write. No I don't use HBITMAP as anyone that has ever done anything worthwhile in Visual C knows these are really restrictive. The "John Hawkins" structure you describe is a totally sensible straight-forward way of storing bitmap data internally. The same way PhotoShop and PaintShop do it. No it doesn't have anything ported from Miranda or Gopher. Now you could either be a pain in the arse and continue to critcise something that is actually very good or you could actually be useful and tell me what you did when you got such a high virtual memory takeup, because I haven't as yet been able to re-create that - it works fine on my machine. In fact, it works fine on all three machines I've used it on, all with different operating systems.
John
- Tue Oct 31 11:19:23 2000

Are you using handles to OS provided picture holding objects or are you holding the picture in a John Hawkins data-structure? Was this entire project ported from Miranda/Gopher?
DSP
- Tue Oct 31 09:10:02 2000

Hmmmm Tim don't really understand what you're doing to use up so much virtual memory. I've got a directory of about 100 640x480 images here and I've done lots of different operations on the whole set at a time and not managed to get above about 12 meg, which seems not unreasonable as its got 100 160x120 thumbnails in memory as 24 bit bitmaps - you need them like this to display them. That in itself accounts for about 6 meg...
John
- Mon Oct 30 16:30:21 2000

John: It would be a mistake on mybehalf. When you sent me the e-mail message about www.maison-de-stuff.net I thought It was a message board addition and then saw your comment underneath here and thought that you had changed the HTML on this page. P.S. Simon Watson really should pick up his e-mails, don't you think
JAE
- Mon Oct 30 16:10:49 2000

Tim, the pictures you got from Aliens have got some interesting Photoshop information including thumbnails and stuff. You might want to have a peek at them with my program. Hmmm about the virtual memory thing, how do you find this out - are you using NT/2000 or 95/98? Hmmm I'll have to look into this...
Jon, I LOVE YOU. P.S. Whats all this about me changing underlying HTML or something?
John
- Mon Oct 30 16:04:52 2000

Don't know what you're talking about Tim. It works fine on my machine :)
John
- Mon Oct 30 16:01:01 2000

John: You've also missed a semi-colon off the third line.
JAE
- Mon Oct 30 15:39:36 2000

More than likely it's because your browser is trying to find Tom's broken image.
JAE
- Mon Oct 30 15:38:31 2000

OI. Don't change the HTML behind the scenes Hawkins or I'll give you a SLAP.
JAE.
- Mon Oct 30 15:37:20 2000

How dare you insinuate that www.maison-de-stuff is slow? Actually it is ever so slightly but not enough to notice really. Won't anyone I.e. Tim or John say that they love me? I've been fishing for the compliment all bloody day and to be quite honest am getting hacked off. (Nah, only joking)
JAE
- Mon Oct 30 15:36:18 2000

Now this is where you're wrong. It's not slow at all. Fact.
John
- Mon Oct 30 15:04:01 2000

Its has currently consumed a virtual memory size of 293,716 KB!!! My poor little lap top!
DSP
- Mon Oct 30 15:02:02 2000

John, love the thumbnailing feature! (About to spill your pint) You clearly need to nick an algorithm off Bird and/or Waddler as its a bit processor hungry isn't it? (deliberately trying to boil your piss) Probably shoddy code in there somewhere.
DSP
- Mon Oct 30 15:00:50 2000

Tim: Your joke was very funny and I've just realised that I love you too.
JAE

John: The camera is a Ricoh that's Ricoh 5300. It has internal memory (8Mb) and a smartmedia port for more memory. It is a good camera and I love you.
JAE

That message should really have ended with :
Hmmnph.
Superseed Boy
- Mon Oct 30 14:46:38 2000

What manner of camera is that then Jon? So is the internal memory something in addition to the memory card? Whats that for? What type of memory card is it - smart media, compact flash, memory stick...?
John
- Mon Oct 30 14:46:08 2000

My internal memory on the digital camera, because it has wicked driver software comes up as my drive I: my memory card comes up as drive J:
.
- Mon Oct 30 14:41:53 2000

P.S. You'll have to then do a Save Changes if you want the images written to disk with their lovely new inline thumbnails. Maybe a good idea to work on copies if the images are important at all. After you've saved the changes, double click the images in the browser and hey presto they'll be loaded up and you'll be able to snoop around the new marker sections, thumbnails and all.
John
- Mon Oct 30 14:41:17 2000

News just in!
The hacker penetration of Microsoft's computer systems was aided by a physically break-in, security sources from Microsoft revealed last night. Apparently the morning after, windows 95, 98 and 2000 were found open.
DSP
- Mon Oct 30 14:39:05 2000

It can create those inline thumbnails for you! Select the images in question, then go to the browse/thumbnails menu and choose Create Inline... You'll get a dialog to let you choose the sort of scaling and type of thumbnail... Scaling maybe easiest to go for "percent of original" say 25% x 25%. For the type of thumbnail, EXIF is probably best, and I'd go for a JPEG rather than a bitmap unless you wanted Huffman and the boys round your house tonight.
John
- Mon Oct 30 14:38:16 2000

Just loaded it. Nice UI! The JPEG it was looking at don't have inline thumbnails, so I just see empty rectangles :-(
DSP

Not quite sure what you mean by it is just a couple of drives on your PC...??
John

I have the digital camera and yes your program would be extremely usefull to me. Especially as mine is just a couple of drives on my P.C. I LOVE IT. (Nearly as much as I love you)

By the way, if you go to the software section, there's a (very) beta release of my lovely program for messing about with JPEGs (possibly from your digitial camera), or wherever else. Be warned that it's quite buggy and lots of bits don't work yet.

I wonder if lexical iconography is a meaningful concept. If so, Tim has displayed good usage of it with the word "mechanics" below, which I think is great. Errr, I think the word girlfriend could be used, not inappropriately. If you like.

I also seek clarification regarding the mechanics of Rob and John's 'relationship' with Chie and Kanako. I am willing to bet (the sum of one pound) that there is quite a high degree of romantic involvement. That's a high degree (kinda like a 1st -- but like the Murphy's). OH AYE!

I would also like to bring to the public-domain the fact that I am slightly sulky because Clare has gone to university. :-(

I wish to raise public spirit with the news that I am embarking on a personal project through the medium of internet to bring mpegs of the Aliens video to the world. I thank you.
