It's only my preferences though, which doesn't necessarily apply to how the rest of the world thinks at all. If you recall Jerry Maguire's "show me the money", as soon as I get to a website I'm thinking "show me the content". As a result, as you've probably noticed, when I make web pages they tend to be very texty, so hopefully they load pretty quickly, and you can quickly find whatever you're interested in.

What this site needs is a limerick competition. It would work better if there is some sort of constraint like, say, the last line has to end with "Wibblestick". Or maybe the protagonist has to be from Didcot. Or perhaps you have to get the phrase "Rogue Hamster" into is somewhere ..?

At the time I didn't know who he was, and wondered what gave him the right to be so rude to the lecturer. It was later that I discovered he'd invented the theory the lecturer was talking about. Probably justified then. I think as a tribute we should all implement Dijkstra's algorithm in some form over the weekend.

You don't have to use perl to write cgi "scripts". Anything that you can compile into an executable will work too - you could use modula 2 if you were feeling particularly masochistic. Or C http://www.redmondlinux.com/cgi_in_c.html
    Graf <graf@altavista.net>
    - Tue Oct 15 20:37:14 2002

Ahh, thanks all. However, when I tried to save the script in notepad, it made it name.pl.txt or name.cgi.txt. Blast. I'll try the programmer's Notepad. But I beg to differ. Notepad is the mutt's nuts.
    Travis
    - Tue Oct 15 19:19:30 2002

Actually I take my previous comment back. I just "wrote" Notepad in under 30 seconds. You don't need to write a single line of code, AppWizard will generate absolutely everything for you. This is not the mark of a good piece of software.
    John
    - Tue Oct 15 17:53:46 2002

Look you bunch of retards, there is nothing hardcore or cool about notepad. It's a windows edit control slapped into a single document AppWizard app. I could write it in approximately eight minutes. That does not make it in anyway good at all. As for Vi, even the Marquis de Sade would consider that a bit sick and twisted. Besides, Textpad and PN let you edit binary. That's far more hardcore and nerdy than notepad could ever manage.

How does it work? I don't know, it just does. Actually, you just maintain an XML file on your site which gets updated automatically every time you add an entry. The XML file contains a few details about the site, and some of the content of the most recently posted entries. RSS clients like Feedreader basically just check this file periodically and notify you of updates... Or something like that.

I'll fix the templates eventually I guess, and then we'll just have to make regular backups or something. After all, I appreciate the effort you put in to a point of putting effort in aswell.. graphics, extra site features (links plugger, music), giving enthusiasm, moving my entire operation here and trying to keep things fresh. By saying no-one appreciates anything anyway very much belittles all the effort I have put in. If you can't be arsed then fine, don't be. Please don't put it down to other people's effort. That's simply unfair.

Hi all, I have updated the links plugger so you can now send your newly added links to the messageboard. This brings it more inline with John's original idea of "a place to put links that I like but don't want to have to hunt through the messageboard to find them". I have also stopped the anonymous linking too, so you'll need the password to add them.

    - Fri Oct 4 14:04:02 2002

I once had to write a system where there was a COM object which generated XML as a BSTR which was picked up by an ASP page, which, using MSXML, put it through an XSLT to generate Javascript which when ran client-side generated HTML that was then formatted by a CSS stylesheet. This would, on occassions, print out ten.
    John
    - Fri Oct 4 13:51:19 2002

You could definitely do that in ASP.
    John
    - Fri Oct 4 13:46:48 2002

I wonder if there is a way to set the style sheet based upon some javascript function that looks at the browser version? I could have black bgcolor if less than IE 6.. :-)

Those pictures are great Tom! Although I'm on a different machine now and therefore back to IE5. So I had to select the text to make it all viewable again... Which then seemed to dither out all of the pictures... You and your fancy HTML trickery...
