Anything with such an Irish-sounding name (such as Claddagh Ring) is invariably not Irish, but a truly stupid theme-bar owned by Bass. I mean ... what is the *point* of an Irish theme?! Personally, I like a beer theme to my pubs ...

This is a very good idea in principle, Andy. However, I think distance is a factor - but not as you might expect - I actually live too close to where I work to make cycling a sensible option.
John
- Wed Oct 29 08:27:52 2003
My exercise recommendation is thus:- Cycle to work. This may not work for you, depending on how far away you live from your workplace, but you get to kill two birds with one stone: getting some exercise and getting to work and back. The bike soon pays for itself in terms of reduced bus fare/petrol/whatever. It's a bit cold at the moment, but you soon warm up once you get going.

Sorry, John, can't help you there. Walking is good exercise and something you enjoy. Perhaps get a train out to Wales and do some proper hillwaking? Although, I am now nicely settled in my new job. Only day 2 and I feel part of the team and everything. The commute allows me to read (the Top 100 from the BBC's Big Read), to write Chom Isis 3 (the up and coming version of my online game) and two fiddle about with Icar plotlines. Working in an office is more tiring, but the work is not more difficult than the self-employed nature of the PhD (which has now finished except corrections).

I can't possibly have had more than six pints Friday night - I had about a pint's worth of Nastro Azzurro in Pizza Express, then one pint in each pub after that - no more than anyone else. dsp
- Thu Oct 16 16:39:47 2003
No, no .... look again. This is the sequence which needs to be compressed. It will bring you fame beyond your wildest dreams if you succeed - and it *looks* possible to me. If you care to run even the simplest analysis, you'll find the following facts: (a) almost 75% of all values are 0. (b) the longest run of 1s is only 2. (c) if you combine 4 bits at a time into a 4-bit word, then 4 out of the 16 possible words *never get used*. If you can reduce this by about 50%, they you're actually compressing random noise, losslessly ... which should not be possible. But it still *looks* possible to me!

Ah. Now I see the error of my ways. No, nothing to do with vegetarianism ... but simply not being awake. Of course an anchovy is a kind of fish, and (as you were ranting about not eating anchovies) my asking whether you eat fish was bound to result in the answer "No". Bit of a redundant question, really. Sorry about that, fellas. I posted it when I was still only half awake. Shall try harder in future.
Jimmy

Nope no fish either. Recent research shows they do feel pain after all - this was tested by injecting bee stings into their lips. I think I could have told the no doubt heavily paid scientists that if you inject a bee sting into anything's lips it is going to hurt like a bastard.

Tie a large piece of elastic to your leg, and tie the other end to your house. Proceed carefully to Oxford, and be sure to hold to the bar tightly when you arrive. At the end of the evening let go, and, hey presto, home. Also if you happen to fall asleep, you'll also be automatically brought back home.

If you guys come to Oxford, then I don't need to get the train ... buses to Abingdon run pretty late (and it's close enough for a taxi too). But it could be tricky for you guys getting to Pangbourne or Reading. Similarly, I'd have trouble getting back to Oxford (or Radley) from Reading. Do you have an alternative way of getting home? Can you fly perhaps? I used to fly, but my super-powers seem to have ebbed a bit of late :(

Well, I've been planning for Friday, so just about anywhere on that day is OK. But now you come to mention it, Oxford might be pretty good. Travel could yet be a problem, though ... the trains don't run especially late in my area (in either direction). Dunno. What do you suggest?
Jimmy
- Mon Oct 13 13:19:52 2003
No, the first stab was Wednesday, however, I'd decided the only way to get everyone to come along was to hold several events. So Friday is still on if you can still make it, but it doesn't necessarily have to be London if elsewhere is better for you (Oxford...?).

You need to define (formally if necessary) a heuristic fruit selection function.

An alright weekend thanks Si. It involved destroying lots of overgrown plants in my front garden, then, whilst dumping the remains at the tip, I found a fiver!! Woo hoo!

Can somebody that understands money please have a look at the following page and explain to me what the implications of it are supposed to be. I *think* it means Britain is a bit of a rip-off place to live in, but I'm really not too sure.

John: <Alan Butt>Remember, you are the aritist!</Alan Butt>
XML is easy to digest from within ASP, or to directly XSLT into HTML (if that's not a verb, it is now).
You're my A!

It's a good idea Tim.... but what sort of xml do you have in mind? Is the idea to transform with an xslt to make you a webpage further down the line...? Or is there some other evil purpose you have in mind?
John
- Fri Oct 3 10:30:57 2003
John: A Photostudio idea for you (and useful for me too). Just like your HTML index generator, how about an XML index generator?
You have a great opportunity to create a powerful Wizard. That generates thumbnails and an XML index.
Of course, like all powerful Wizards, we can only pray that they don't turn evil.

Hmmmm I don't think any of us were born in the area. Most of us went to Reading University though (this is how we know each other).
John

I went to Bramcote fairly recently (actually maybe some time in 2001) with Chie, and explained to her how we used to run round with plastic swords hitting each other. She went very quiet. Amazingly, we bumped into Anthony, Clink etc there, who were still at it. I have to admit, I sometimes get these urges...

I'm going to Bramcote Park to take photos of mushrooms... the urge to take a weapon is running rampant in my mind. Just a small dagger. Just in case. It's Red Troll season after all.
