...and Chie went out to her work Christmas party this evening (to which other halves were not invited) and the old people who live next door are having some sort of wild party.

Well fasthosts appears to be having major trouble - FTP has been down for over 24 hours now, a couple of my other websites aren't responding, and I can't even get to fasthosts.co.uk to look at the service status pages etc.

JM: Don't worry, bought one of those a month or so ago, as we knew it was going to be a boy! The really good thing is that the Sainsburys, where I shop, has just modernised its store and put in a large toy and clothing section. I think he's got the whole set now. Went to see him yesterday, and he is, of course, gorgeous. I'll get Rob to post piccies when we get them.

Congrats are in order for the birthing. Now for another question, addressed primarily to Rob: what kind of role do systems of formal logic play in AI and its development? Because that's terribly broad, can you point me toward some articles/authors/problems? I'd be grateful.

Lox
Mon Nov 26 16:48:52 2007
Lox, thats good to hear, you're right about the translations, I think dubbing would totally ruin the programme, personally series 3 wasn't as good ( except for Andy and Lou ) as the previous 2, i think they just exhausted the characters a bit too much.
Kev
Mon Nov 26 16:35:51 2007
Kev: No fortunately it's not dubbed we get subtitles, but I ignore them as they are shite, they cannot translate British slang into Italian at all, they are completely useless... But the program rocks it's really great.

Car dealers try to be, it seems. However, I got the better of one about a year ago to the tune of the cost of a channel crossing which I claimed I had lost due to his incompetence. In fact, I had never even booked it. Perhaps I missed my vocation in life. (P.s. we crossed the channel later on a different ferry and for less than the cost of the original)

Simon: Ah, I've heard of the Sony one. Yes, the contrast is a big issue, as is (was!) the backlight which is probably what made my eyes feel the strain, so to speak. So if the new screen technology comes down in price, then I'd love to try one. Can I imagine ever getting rid of several thousand books and yet still being able to read them?

The idea behind these newer readers (at least the sony one) is that they use low-contrast screens that appear much more like paper - easier on the eyes. Also they're designed to be read so the form factor is tested for comfort in reading. I think the sony one only uses battery power when changing the screen contents - very clever!

Yes, in a vaguely similar vein, the other day Chie and I went to eat at a Japanese restaurant where they seemingly had assumed we were both non-Japanese to start with, as they spoke to us in English. I then ordered in Japanese, at which point the waitress turned to Chie, and said "oh, are you Japanese?", and proceeded to talk to her entirely in Japanese and completely ignore me altogether. Ho, hum.

Who the flamin' 'eck is interested in darts on telly?
John's Mum
Mon Nov 19 14:53:54 2007
Hmmm I'm not sure I can be that cross at the BBC on this occasion. Whilst I have no interest in darts whatsoever, it probably has broader appeal than a program about Japanese wildlife. So if one has to be cut for the sake of another, I suppose you have to go with keeping the larger audience happy.

Rob Lang
Fri Nov 16 11:46:11 2007
Morning all!!
Sheri: I live a boring existence I'm afraid.
Lox/Rob: Yes, the debate gets a bit blurred at times. However Mac hardware is actually fundamentally different to a PC (of whatever brand) The memory map and paging system for example. The BIOS which doesn't exist as such (think EFI) in a Mac. My own Mac has 2GB RAM and 128MB video RAM with a 2GHZ Intel CPU. Running XP Pro using Bootcamp I found it (using 3D Mark tests etc) to be signifcantly faster than a similar spec vanilla PC. Yeah, tue, Mac games are poor, but it's never designed for serious gaming...
Nigel
Fri Nov 16 11:28:50 2007
Rob: Mac hardware is worse than PC, it's a wide known fact, on that PCs are going to be better in the future too I think.
Lox
Fri Nov 16 11:00:30 2007
Rob: Sure, but as a vaguely educated individual I can see what is good in one system and in the other, I am not particularly loyal to Apple, but I must say that it makes my life easier for all those things that on a PC that used to mix work and game use in the long run used to clog the system. It is also true that the incidence of crashes in my Mac have been considerably smaller than the PC, using similar applications even. Having said that, if John makes "Pears" and his computers are good I'd go for them.
Lox
Fri Nov 16 10:59:24 2007
I read one post by someone raving about the hardware in his new Mac and how much better it was than a PC. Clearly an uninformed individual who'd just believed the marketting that somehow the machines are vastly different. If only someone would open it up and indicate the Intel chip inside.
Rob Lang
Fri Nov 16 10:55:18 2007
I've opened plenty of Windows driven dells that have worked right out of the box. I'm not saying one is better than the other, they're just different tools that have a big overlap and to blindly write off one because of some bizarre corporate loyalty is a very strange thing to do for any group of vaguely educated individuals.
Rob Lang
Fri Nov 16 10:43:33 2007
Rob: Sure, but mac doesn't say that their products are designed for gaming... Art and Business that's their target, PCs are great for gaming (a PC it's my game box and will remain so I think), but the fact that they are marketed to be good at everything makes them average in many fields. I mean Macs do really work out of the box, if you use it to work I am sure that you appreciate the hassle free system. Remember that 90% of the people using computers are just regular users...
Lox
Fri Nov 16 10:40:22 2007
They're not really spot on, though, are they? Most bit games that come out are for the PC or Consoles. So, how does that make a PC only a business machine?
Rob Lang
Fri Nov 16 10:35:46 2007

Rob: Apple vs Mac ads are spot on, PC users cannot really say a lot against Macs nowadays, especially after the tragedy that Vista is creating...

Sheri
Wed Nov 14 06:46:14 2007
Yes, I quite agree. There's only one chap I keep in touch with from my school days, and that's only an email at Christmas now. We did politely talk about making contact more often, but it soon slid back to the yearly review... And thinking about it, as I'm not a natural fibber (!) I don't really want to explain to any high-flying chums that I actually let go the reins and dropped a few rungs on the career ladder. I have some vestiges of pride left (somewhere!)
Nigel
Tue Nov 13 23:13:52 2007
You're absolutely right Nigel - the Maison is all about maintaining continual contact between a group of people because we actually all like each other (well, I assume so anyway - I like all of you at least!). Whilst there are probably exceptions, generally speaking if you haven't spoken to someone for ten years it probably means you don't really have a lot in common, and even if you did have something in common a decade ago you're very likely to have drifted completely apart in the interim. So I can't help but think the overriding reason people want to "get back in touch" with people they went to school with is simply to gloat (or pretend) about what wonderful lives they've been having since they last spoke.
John
Tue Nov 13 22:23:10 2007
John: LOL!!!!! :P Yes, I have a look around these places, then lose interest very quickly. I think they serve more as places for people to pretend to be other than they really are... Which can be good, I'm sure, but... At least the Maison is rooted in some form of reality!! :D :D
Nigel
Tue Nov 13 20:43:18 2007
So is Facebook dead yet then? After an initial period where I was quite keen on it, the novelty entirely wore off, and now I hardly ever visit the site at all, apart from every now and again when I get an email that someone has added me as a friend. Typically it is someone I was at school with or something, who I haven't seen for over 10 years and realistically I'm never going to get back in touch with, so we just say a cursory hello to each other, I look through their profile to reassure myself they're earning less money than I am, and that's it. I mean, really, what is the point?
John
Tue Nov 13 18:04:11 2007
Sheri: I only did a tiny, tiny bit of it which none of you will ever use (to do with the TV features in Media Center) and besides it was practically forced labour anyway!

I think XP was Windows at it's peak. Certainly it is more usable that Vista for real work. Vista feels soooo unweildy, cumbersome and sluggish despite the fact that I'm sure what it is doing is actually quite good. I suppose theory says an OS should be unobtrusive, intuitive and slick... Vista just feels so top-heavy. For my two-penny-worth!! :D

Tue Nov 13 11:40:30 2007

I suppose if I was using it all the time it would be easier, but my main computer - work - is still on XP, as is my home laptop. Work has no plans at the moment to change to Vista, in fact the last lot of PCs we bought we had to change back to XP. Rather ridiculous! Still that's local Government for you.

I have to laugh - or cry. The new series of "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!" has just started. I am sitting listening to rock through my headphones to drown out all their purile machinations... However I just had to remove the headphones to answer Joc... And I heard this phrase: "Don't try and charm me up!" which is, I suppose a new way of saying: "Stop flattering me." JM: I didn't know!! Wow, Id love to have arelativ that was good at football! :D
Kev: Fair point, I agree that clubs should be punished more, even if the facts are happening outside the stadium (as it is in recent events), but the problem is that these people are not fans, they just want to rampage and vent their idiocy and football is just an excuse. You can shut down football, they will find some other means (G8, other sports, whatever). Moreover penalizing seriously a club might not be fair, if for example (as it happened in Italy two months ago) a group of so called "fans" disguised themselves as the opponent' supporters so that they could come in contact with the real fans, make a mess, and the blame was to fall on the other team's fan (fortunately their plan was foiled)... What happens then?

To my mind a lot of the violence in football could be quite easily sorted out if the clubs/players/fifa or whoever is in charge took responsibility for their fans. Now you might say how can these people be responsible for fans behavior, well they need fans because thats how they make money so when they turn a blind eye to the violence ( ok they don't condone it it ) I think that they should do more. How about fifa/premiership/European body just says club x is not playing in Europe this year because of fans behavior. Players in team say, we are not playing this year because of fans behavior, Clubs all together say we are not playing in x league this year because of fans behavior. Of course this kind of thing would never happen, there is too much money at stake, but the responsibility and solution to violence in football, or any other sport lies with these people. Early morning rant over, I am off to get some coffee :)

Nigel: Yeah, weather was crap here too, and it seems that some policeman shot a guy in a car that it turned out to be a supporter of Lazio (one of Rome's teams), this created a terrible knock-over effect and some of the violent supporters of some Serie A teams decided to create havoc of the day... Fortunately Fiorentina's supporters behaved well, but some other were completely out of their mind. Although I do not condone what happened because it's downright terrible that a policeman shoots someone like that (there was no real reason to do that), I also hate these people who cover themselves in a team's colour to start all this rioting... :(

(Only joking of course!! :) :) :) ) Take heart, dear chap, I am of the opinion that sometimes work-colleagues are not always the ones you want to socialise with. True, for the most part, I have always had my social life separate from work. And, for example, I don't think I could actually go out with/marry/have nookie with, a woman from work... It has always been a separate entity - work<>home.

Hmmm... well this sucks. I have spent the last few months feeling pretty disappointed at the fact that I haven't managed to cultivate much of a social life out of my new job, and had always put it down to the fact that I was on a small team and most of the guys had families to go home to etc. Recently though a few new people who seemed more sociable joined my team, and so I thought things were looking up. However, tonight several of the new people seem to have organised a night out together and didn't invite me. I am now left in the office, feeling decidedly sorry for myself.

Nigel: EhEHE No problem at all, hopefully I will be able to post news about it soon... The fact that the japanese are making things really hard for me it's a pain in the arse, but I hope that I can manage to get what they owe me in the end...

Hi Lox. No, I wasn't being sarchastic. I'm sorry. Yes, I had received your email, but must have been busy and put it straight in my "Maison" folder to read later... and then forgotten all about it! My apologies again, I have now read it and understand!! :D

JM: Let's hope that they do not get a bad idea of me early on.... The 6 months trial that we have in Italy on new contracts is driving me crazy... And I seem to remember that the miles were 17 not 12... Oh well, it did uid character though, I have a great memory of that night, shame that we didn't have a camera with us...
Nigel: I am sure you are being sarcastic there right? I thought I sent you a mail 1 month ago about it... Did you ever receive it?

Lox - New job?!?!?!?!?!?! -= ? =-
Nigel
Thu Nov 8 13:11:56 2007
Lox: I think I went sick early on in about every new job I started! Look after yourself.
Bet your ears were burning at the weekend - John was talking of the time you both went to Nottingham and walked back here in the middle of the night. John says it was "character building". All 12 miles of it.

I was explaining it to a work colleague who remembered the advert but could place the "You're an exchange student" quote. Once we found it on YouTube, I felt I had to share it.

Thu Nov 8 11:02:56 2007

Oh, on the subject of leopard, I can recommend the screensaver that makes mosaics out of your photos. Oh, and on an old topic I am also the proud owner of a wifi rabbit (since april, when a bunch of my friends clubbed together to buy me one for my birthday, which was a total surprise). Must subscribe it to the maison rss feed.

Tom: I use growl, and it's awesome. I have also bravely updated both my macbook and iMac to Leopard and haven't come across any significant problems. Still can't write to NTFS tho. But at least they finally fixed the finder so it doesn't lock up totally when you lose access to a network drive.

Do you use growl on the Mac guys? Lovely subtle pop ups for things like "you have email", "skype messages" etc...

dsp
Mon Nov 5 17:06:59 2007
Yeah, I'm sure you *can* get an 8-core for less than that ... but it's the exponential increase to get to 32 that shocks me!!!!

Jimmy: A PS3 contains 8 cores and can run Linux but one is usually broken. £300. Bargin. Check out this link: http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/news/2007/10/ps3_supercomputer

Mon Nov 5 16:29:14 2007
So Jimmy - an 8-core Mac Pro costs £2659... OK, so only 3ghz (x4)...
Nigel
Mon Nov 5 14:57:44 2007
Dsp: Bravo! The trick lies in not cooking the tortellini completely in the boiling water, you drain them and then when you stir them in the pan with cream and all the rest you can finish cooking there on a mild/strong fire... (remember to add black pepper in the end)
Lox
Mon Nov 5 12:52:29 2007
OK, somebody explain this one to me: A decent computer is likely to cost a little over 1000 pounds. So when I was told that an 8-core one cost around 10,000 I wasn't surprised. By the 32-core one cost ... HALF A MILLION! It's like Dr. Evil is selling them. I think I'll buy a rack of 4x8 thank you very much!
Jimmy
Mon Nov 5 12:49:25 2007
Lox - on Sunday I tried to recreate the tortellini with cream, ham and peas. It was nearly perfect, I think I cooked it a little too long. But I did remember to keep stirring the pan!!

Mon Nov 5 11:14:05 2007
John: There is a difference between doing nothing for a day and doing nothing at work. Especially if you have been employed of late, and you struggle to try to show the people around you that you can actually do something good... I'd have so much to write about the present experience... Anyways I need to try harder I guess, sooner or later things will settle and I will be able to be "busy"...
Lox
Mon Nov 5 11:11:40 2007
Can we swap then Lox? I seem to have the opposite problem at the moment, and would love to have a week of doing nothing (in fact this is pretty much what I'm planning for next week).
John
Mon Nov 5 10:34:30 2007

Dunno Nigel. That would be good. Then you could have a boot camp partition which was writable.

Sun Nov 4 19:35:21 2007
That's got me thinking of a lot of things, Tom. And I've picked on similar problems reading reviews... A question... Does OS X now write NTFS ? Is that still a no-no?
Nigel
Sun Nov 4 14:56:03 2007

Advice: stick with Tiger for a bit.
tom
Sun Nov 4 13:17:34 2007
Another issue (reluctant to call it a bug yet). I have some fat32 NAS boxes. I could use these perfectly under Tiger. Under Leopard, I'm unable to see the contents of them. Permissions are right though as I can WRITE to them fine... the files I drag there are seen by an XP box browsing the same share. But I can't read the contents back. I've tried from the commandline too.

For this reason I conclude that fireworks manufacturers are actually the driving force behind most coups and peasant uprisings, in the hope of establishing an annual fireworks festival.
John
Sun Nov 4 07:59:25 2007
As for Guy Fawkes night (November 5th) yes it is a curious thing, but then I suppose many other countries' annual fireworks display are to do with the overthrowing or ousting of a monarchy - Independence Day in the US being a good example, and don't they also have fireworks on Bastille Day in France? The irony is that in the UK it marks an attempt to overthrow the monarchy, but a failed one - and like Nigel I'm also never quite sure if we're celebrating the fact that the plot was thwarted, or the fact that Mr Fawkes had a bloody good go at it.
John
Sun Nov 4 07:57:00 2007
Thanks for the concern Sheri! I'll get over it I'm sure...
John
Sun Nov 4 07:53:06 2007

Sat Nov 3 22:10:57 2007
Evening all! :)
Yes John, just back from a large bonfire/fireworks event hosted by the local fire-brigade.
Travis/Sheri: In 1605 someone tried to blow up our parliament. The plot was foiled and the miscreants dealt with. Quite why we still celebrate this act of terrorism, or at leasts its foiling, in this way is rather a mystery to me... To mark the fact we stopped someone blowing something up, we blow a lot of little things up and ohhh and aaahh a lot... Still, it makes for a social event!! :)
Nigel
Sat Nov 3 21:09:10 2007
Yeah, what's the occasion ? Hope you feel better, John. Your last entry (or penultimate) upset me.
Sheri
Sat Nov 3 19:31:08 2007
What's the occasion for the fireworks?
Travis
Sat Nov 3 17:53:21 2007
Anyone going to any fireworks displays tonight? I'm working on the theory that if we just stand outside later on we're bound to be able to see something!
John
Sat Nov 3 17:45:03 2007

Sat Nov 3 16:55:43 2007
"Hi all!!
"Eddie Izzard...In drag" :D Isn't that a bit of an oxymoron? He *is* a funny stand-up though...!
And Travis: Don't worry about Sheri's treatment of us all. I'm sure worse is to come !!! :D :D :D
Nigel
Sat Nov 3 16:29:02 2007
Well, Sheri. That would be a bit unfortunate. I kind of like my life as a heterosexual, but if you can think of a way that the people in my life are all happier, then by all means, gay me.
