John - Sun Dec 17 18:45:12 2000 I'd like to take this opportunity to utterly blow my own trumpet by saying I'm writing this message from a brand new PC which I bought my Mum for christmas. John - Sun Dec 17 18:30:45 2000 Oh and by the way, stuffware.co.uk is now active - it points to the software page at the moment. Jon E - Thu Dec 7 14:41:04 2000 Which 5 have you got then? I've got radiohead, caleixco, Alabama 3 and Blue Jame... Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Thu Dec 7 13:57:38 2000 That would be Retail Therepy of 200 Blank CDs. I feel better now. I would feel much better if my friends and yours were on the message board. JOn E - Thu Dec 7 13:11:03 2000 I've got 5 of them. Dido's album has to be ordered from the states (It's cheaper to buy it from DVD Express) than it is to get HMV To ship it?? WHY?????? Jon E - Thu Dec 7 12:13:31 2000 Has anyone seen this critics top 100 albums of the year. I must be badly out of touch, cos I've not heard of 1/2 of them. #4 is "Jill Scott - Who is Jill Scott?". Which is what I was wondering really... Maybe i'm just annoyed that I've only got 4 of them - although I have seen 7 of them live this year. I think I might just be getting old and intolerant tho.... Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Thu Dec 7 11:39:06 2000 I've not got the dido album, but I really like the eminem thing so i'll probably end up getting it at some point. I got a new pc recently with a 30 gig drive - support were asking me if they could back up the network drives onto it at some point. 80+ hours of music so far :) Oh and don't buy anything from buy.com - i got some cd's in august and they're bitching at me now that my card didn't go through. Twarts. Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Thu Dec 7 11:31:14 2000 http://www.todayonly.co.uk/ have a good offer on C.D.'s today. Might have to get them down me. Jon E - Thu Dec 7 11:26:43 2000 I'm not allowed 6 gigs of hard disk. Pathetic. I've only got about 400 Megs to play with. Mr. Graf, have you got Dido's album? Jon E - Thu Dec 7 11:25:22 2000 Quick fix: Press the app on the task bar. dsp - Thu Dec 7 11:24:56 2000 I am mostly listening to coughs and mobile phones. dsp - Thu Dec 7 11:24:22 2000 Today i is mostly listening to the 6 gig of mp3s i've got on my HD at work :) The Pixies are on at the moment :) :) I also recommend dido, although it would amuse me greatly if "bob the builder" got to number one instead.. Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Thu Dec 7 11:19:16 2000 Tim, Could We have a minimise button though? Jonathan Ellis <Jonathan.Ellis@arvalphh.co.uk> At Work,, Ground Floor - Thu Dec 7 11:17:22 2000 I am so unbelivably happy that I have a sound card in my PC. Today I am mostly (and moistly) listening to David Gray, All Saints, Lene Marlin, Macy Gray, Mel C, Moby, Paul Simon, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Texas, David Arnold and U2. Also I am listening to Dido. (The one who appears on Eminem's new single, and Sliding Doors). Jon Ellis' Recommendation of the Day is Dido. Buy It or be a slaphead. Yours sincerley, Jonathan A. Ellis Bsc. Jonathan Ellis <Jonathan.Ellis@arvalphh.co.uk> At Work,, Ground Floor - Thu Dec 7 11:15:47 2000 FYI: My breakfast has just arrived. I know the name is dodgy, but its is v. cool. dsp - Thu Dec 7 09:35:50 2000 Having spent an entire day using the message app, I've added a couple of tarty features to ruin the simplistic appearance. These include:

Defensive Boy - Wed Dec 6 15:05:10 2000 Proverbs brought up-to-date (nerdily): A watched hard-disk never formats. dsp - Wed Dec 6 15:02:20 2000 John: Nice.. In a problem solving meeting, get really carried away and suggest a completely daft solution. When this is pointed out to you, use the above phrase. dsp - Wed Dec 6 14:11:10 2000 ok well I'll try my best then! Will leave here around 5 hopefully... Oxford Circus is a sort of crossroads, and Great Portland Street comes off there, follow it along and Little Portland Street crosses over it. Turn right, or just phone! John - Wed Dec 6 12:52:32 2000
dsp <dsp@maison-de-stuff.net> Work, The North - Wed Dec 6 12:45:50 2000 I too am using the program.. rowanboy <tom@sparc5.co.uk> London, Cannon Street - Wed Dec 6 12:39:18 2000 Several things:
John - Wed Dec 6 12:38:34 2000 Tell me what functionallity you want on the board. Jon E - Wed Dec 6 12:35:19 2000 HTTP is a protocol built on-top of TCP/IP. As you know, as things happen on the board, there are two-ways we know about it. 1. we get an email, or, 2. we poll it. I think that Andi was saying it would be cool for some kind of message-board client detached from the browser. Completely feasible, it just requires some additional functionality at the board's side providing we all accept its limitations. As yet, everyone's is discussing ideas. Nothing will ever blood happen anyway. p.s. I am writing this message using the Message Submit program dsp <dsp@maison-de-stuff.net> Work, The North - Wed Dec 6 12:00:29 2000 I'm at work and I'm really quite pissed off with it. I have become quite confused about this polling lark. To poll what? I thought it was for a http request to poll a page on the message board (A cut down version of the message board). If so, then it's using TCP/IP which polls anyway, so why are we wondering about it? Please, Tim, could you explain in morman terms. Jon E - Wed Dec 6 11:49:30 2000 It is possible to implement RPC across HTTP. This is the future of distributed applications. SOAP: Simple Object Access Protocol, this is effectively COM/DCOM/MTS/COM+/Unix RPC across HTTP. This uses XML as the data-format, and HTTP as the transmission protocol. The principles are easily demonstrated, this is what MessageSubmit does without using any industry standard. The response generated by AddMessage.pl could include some data that describing the current state of the message board. Of course, for smart retrieval, the board may need to store the messages in some kind of structure. Where's Jon Ellis today? dsp <dsp@maison-de-stuff.net> Work, The North - Wed Dec 6 11:32:38 2000 Does it really matter that it requires polling? A Time delay or even onMaximise and onRefresh() would probably be sufficient. Let's face it, at the moment we have to refresh our web Browsers. We can always build a cgi script which displays the last 10 messages, so all that would have to be done would be to have a http window in the app. Jon E - Wed Dec 6 11:28:59 2000 That is the problem... And if it didn't use HTTP, most people (including myself) would be firewalled off from it... Hmm. Idea's a bit of a non starter really, isn't it... Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Wed Dec 6 11:24:02 2000 Deliberate use of the work inherent, The problem with building over the HTTP protocol, is that its connection-less, hence inherently requires polling. dsp <dsp@maison-de-stuff.net> Work, The North - Wed Dec 6 11:15:29 2000 John: I am at Cannon Street... until about 17:00, but I can get away a little bit earlier... where do you wanna meet?! rowanboy - Wed Dec 6 10:01:28 2000 The way to do it would be to have the addmessage script update a smaller page which lasts for only, say, 30 minutes. That way people who are not online won't get about 400 messages when they finally reconnect.. They only get the last few... Just my 2p.. rowanboy - Wed Dec 6 10:00:36 2000 MAIM would be like ICQ or something. It would probably minimise to the system tray, then flash or change colour when a new message is posted to the message board, and when you click on the tray icon it pops up with the new message. As I said, i'm not sure how you'd manage that tho. I spose you could just poll the page every few minutes to see if it has changed but that's not very bandwidth friendly. Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Wed Dec 6 09:55:46 2000 What does MAIM do? dsp <dsp@maison-de-stuff.net> Work, The North - Wed Dec 6 09:47:41 2000 Of course the logical next step is MAIM - the MAison de stuff Instant Messanger. Not entirely sure how you'd do that thru the proxy/firewall evilness most of us have to put up with tho. Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Wed Dec 6 09:41:54 2000 Massive apologies for clogging everyone inbox with testing shite. dsp <dsp@maison-de-stuff.net> Work, The North - Wed Dec 6 09:36:18 2000 Doh! I really meant to try the game last night but got distracted. By beer. Which i suppose is fair enough really. The Back of Beyond is doing London Pride for £1.30 ish :) Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Wed Dec 6 09:34:09 2000 Hello i um...have an entry for the phrase book but my apathy forbids me from clicking the phrasebook link.....so i'm sticking it here instead. (you might already have this one but i'm not certain) ALTERNATIVELY.... Used when giving instructions with a multiple choice option for the instructee. OH GOODY! Jon E - Mon Dec 4 12:49:37 2000 I shall immediately start work on penguin-cod-piece.com DSP - Mon Dec 4 12:46:59 2000 I was more interested in the 50 quid a month. I know that in the long term its more, but it would give the flexibility to sack it off at any point in the future. Plus won't give an initial sting of 250 dabs. DSP - Mon Dec 4 12:45:58 2000 Obviously though, we would have to have a damn fine website which would allow other people to purchase space off us. Perhaps we should start designing that heah Tim (and Others). I'll create a directory under root called albatros. No special reason why, except to start creating a different web site under there. - Mon Dec 4 12:43:39 2000 Definately Yes, but remember a reseller is £500 now. Is it still a goer? Jon E - Mon Dec 4 12:37:44 2000 OI! Ellis In the new year, do you fancy going halves on our own Reseller package. I know this is blatantly your idea, but I'm letting you know I'm up for it if you still are. DSP - Mon Dec 4 12:07:13 2000 Potentially. Currently just an MDB. Jon E - Mon Dec 4 11:57:33 2000 Did I read you write that you were working on a db? Is this a secret JAE Maison de Stuff project, to be revealed at an unspecified secret date? <LLCoolJ>Something like Jonathan?</LLCoolJ> DSP - Mon Dec 4 11:50:49 2000 Good Morning Mr. Hastings Jon E - Mon Dec 4 11:48:05 2000 Good morning class. DSP - Mon Dec 4 11:40:42 2000 Tom: Have a question for you. How good are you with routing Unix Servers? Can you work as a contractor? We have about 10-15 Unix Servers, all production systems, which need major overhaul on the network. Each Server has 2 Virtual Network cards (190.39.x.x and a 10.67.x.x) and now have way too many default router settings. E-mail me at: Jonthan.Ellis@arval.phh.co.uk if your interested. Jon E - Sun Dec 3 17:49:33 2000 Rowanboy: The site runs on a NT4 server. Having IIS4, and other assorted bollocks. ASP Is needed badly for your mate and mine, (He is feeling just fine). It's Mr Tim Hastings. I've heard a vicous rumour tha you shouldn't be running websites off ADSL. It's the law. Don't Break the law, or I'll get Medievel on your arse. If you check out http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/ we have a package through a reseller from them. It is all very kind of you to offer a bit of a Sparc server. Oh, Databases.... Timmy is working on a database, as am I, what is the change of getting , say a DB2, stacked on there?
Jon E - Sun Dec 3 17:46:18 2000 Sorry.. should mention that the auction ends at 20:00:17.. considering the page takes about 10sec to load... these was simply NO HOPE! rowanboy - Fri Dec 1 20:09:06 2000 Check out my evil bidding skill on ebay.co.uk.. ![]() rowanboy - Fri Dec 1 20:08:19 2000 As requested: rowanboy - Fri Dec 1 19:57:48 2000 Rob? rowanboy - Fri Dec 1 19:17:30 2000 What does the M.D.S. run on now? Is it a decent webserver, or what? The reason I ask is that I *may* be getting ADSL at some point, and have a Sun Sparc 2 (and a Sparc 5) which might make a suitable living space for these pages. Naturally, they are all UPS protected, and yes, we can have PHP, SSL and all that shite... :-) (having just finished compling Apache with the addon modules..) You *could* check out http://10.1.1.20/index.php if you were slightly more local to me!! rowanboy - Fri Dec 1 19:16:51 2000 It's here. Feel free to change the bit of text attached to it, but let me know - I'm editing it at the moment so we don't want to incur the rather or Roger Loader with some kind of dirty write operation.... shudder. I put a picture there for Jon too... Please change it if you have something more rcent! John - Fri Dec 1 15:02:47 2000 yeah, why? DSP - Fri Dec 1 14:50:02 2000 Is anybody there....? John - Fri Dec 1 14:42:43 2000 Tom (and Jon) : do you have a recent picture of yourself? I want to do a maison de stuff who's who page... Also Tom did you say you'd been using photo studio for some pictures from your Dad's camera? Any chance I could have a sample one to have a look at? (Preferably straight from the camera, before any editing has taken place)... John - Fri Dec 1 13:17:31 2000 Yep Tom sounds good. What evening? Whereabouts are you working in London? Maybe we could go to that pub I went to on Saturday if you want something central, it was quite good. John - Fri Dec 1 13:14:50 2000 John: actually, I am working in London quite a bit in December.... meet up for a beer one evening?
