Jon E

You know you were talking about reseller packages from fasthosts, well UK2 do dedicated servers which I assume amounts to the same thing, they seem to be a bit cheaper - 25 pounds a month. Although there is a setup cost of 200 quid. The first year will then cost the same (500), but following that just 300 a year...

Having spent an entire day using the message app, I've added a couple of tarty features to ruin the simplistic appearance.

These include:

  • Auto <br>
  • Tag insertion - especially for me 'cos <stupid>remembering the syntax is hard</stupid>.
  • bold tags
  • h ref inserter
  • bigger fonts

Several things:

  1. I saw an attempted suicide on my way in today, which wasn't so nice. (don't worry, I think the guy in question is fairly undamaged, at least physically).
  2. Tom, yes sometime after 5 a drink sounds great (I'm teaching until 5). I bloody need one after this morning! May I suggest The Social, Little Portland Street (off Great Portland Street), near Oxford Circus? What say we meet there at 6?
  3. Tim, where could I get a copy of your message submit program??
  4. Yes I think we should do a stuff instant messenger with all due speed. If its just HTTP and polling, that is a piece of cake. Not too sure how do deal with proxies mind, but I bet one of you lot does.

John
- Wed Dec 6 12:38:34 2000

Tell me what functionallity you want on the board.
Jon E
- Wed Dec 6 12:35:19 2000

HTTP is a protocol built on-top of TCP/IP. As you know, as things happen on the board, there are two-ways we know about it.
1. we get an email, or,
2. we poll it.
I think that Andi was saying it would be cool for some kind of message-board client detached from the browser.
Completely feasible, it just requires some additional functionality at the board's side providing we all accept its limitations.
As yet, everyone's is discussing ideas.
Nothing will ever blood happen anyway.
p.s. I am writing this message using the Message Submit program
dsp <dsp@maison-de-stuff.net>
Work, The North - Wed Dec 6 12:00:29 2000

I'm at work and I'm really quite pissed off with it. I have become quite confused about this polling lark. To poll what? I thought it was for a http request to poll a page on the message board (A cut down version of the message board). If so, then it's using TCP/IP which polls anyway, so why are we wondering about it? Please, Tim, could you explain in morman terms.
Jon E
- Wed Dec 6 11:49:30 2000

It is possible to implement RPC across HTTP. This is the future of distributed applications. SOAP: Simple Object Access Protocol, this is effectively COM/DCOM/MTS/COM+/Unix RPC across HTTP. This uses XML as the data-format, and HTTP as the transmission protocol.
The principles are easily demonstrated, this is what MessageSubmit does without using any industry standard. The response generated by AddMessage.pl could include some data that describing the current state of the message board.
Of course, for smart retrieval, the board may need to store the messages in some kind of structure.
Where's Jon Ellis today?
dsp <dsp@maison-de-stuff.net>
Work, The North - Wed Dec 6 11:32:38 2000

Does it really matter that it requires polling? A Time delay or even onMaximise and onRefresh() would probably be sufficient. Let's face it, at the moment we have to refresh our web Browsers. We can always build a cgi script which displays the last 10 messages, so all that would have to be done would be to have a http window in the app.
Jon E
- Wed Dec 6 11:28:59 2000

That is the problem... And if it didn't use HTTP, most people (including myself) would be firewalled off from it... Hmm. Idea's a bit of a non starter really, isn't it...
Graf <graf@altavista.net>
- Wed Dec 6 11:24:02 2000

Deliberate use of the work inherent,
The problem with building over the HTTP protocol, is that its connection-less, hence inherently requires polling.

John: I am at Cannon Street... until about 17:00, but I can get away a little bit earlier... where do you wanna meet?!
rowanboy
- Wed Dec 6 10:01:28 2000

The way to do it would be to have the addmessage script update a smaller page which lasts for only, say, 30 minutes. That way people who are not online won't get about 400 messages when they finally reconnect.. They only get the last few... Just my 2p..
rowanboy
- Wed Dec 6 10:00:36 2000

MAIM would be like ICQ or something. It would probably minimise to the system tray, then flash or change colour when a new message is posted to the message board, and when you click on the tray icon it pops up with the new message. As I said, i'm not sure how you'd manage that tho. I spose you could just poll the page every few minutes to see if it has changed but that's not very bandwidth friendly.
Graf <graf@altavista.net>

The class contains a utility method for converting a String into a MIME format called "x-www-form-urlencoded" format.

To convert a String, each character is examined in turn:

    • The ASCII characters 'a' through 'z', 'A' through 'Z', and '0' through '9' remain the same.
    • The space character ' ' is converted into a plus sign '+'.
    • All other characters are converted into the 3-character string "%xy", where xy is the two-digit hexadecimal representation of the lower 8-bits of the character.
