Happy New Year ! J'sM - sounds a wise choice!! :)
Well, having young kids and no babysitter (on NY eve - come one, that would be unlikely!) The Memsahib and I are just relaxing in each other's company with a Blossom Hill :)
Actually I'm listening to MP3s and have to say, they sound better from WMP than iTunes... Did I *really* say that? Yup! 'Tis true. And I'm using decent Sennheisers....

Mon Dec 31 16:56:34 2007
Travis: I'd love to pass on the recipe it's quite simple... I have just finished a Dark Chocolate (average 80% cocoa) + 4 different types of nuts mousse, a mousse of dark chocolate (avg.80%) + a pear and pear liqueur mousse and the last special, a dark chocolate (avg 90%) mousse with SEVEN different spices and lime... Which one do you need? :P
Lox
Mon Dec 31 16:55:55 2007
Lox: That sounds amazing. I would love to take a look at a chocolate mousse recipe, but I understand if you would have to kill me if I saw the recipe. Our fare will be simpler and not prepared by my hands. Tallahassee is the state capital so I plan to take them to the Capital Bar and Grill, which is quite good. Then beer and gin and tonics back at my place.
Travis
Mon Dec 31 15:06:55 2007
Nigel: only if the sister in law is feeling better. Her illness postponed the trip until today if at all. We live about 5 hours from them and about 16 hours from the main bulk of my family. That is prohibitive in most cases except we try to meet up once per year. I saw my parents over the summer last.
Travis
Mon Dec 31 15:05:19 2007
Boooom!!! (ouch.. we lost John..)

Mon Dec 31 12:03:12 2007
We are going to have:
4 Starters
Potatoe ravioli with rocket and several types of nuts sauce (I will cook this), then another pasta dish with black cabbage and sausage
then I will make a braized tuna steak with teriyaki sauce made by myself
some greens and lentils
I will then make three different types of chocolate mousse to close it up... All in all quite small compared to what we did other years... :)

Best of luck with the Mah Jong, John! It looks so fiendish - though colourful - and I know a guy who writes books on the subject - yet I have no idea what it's all about... :D
Travis - Family New Year? I often feel a bit guilty about these occasions. My nearest relative (on my side of the marital divide) is about 150 miles away. I know this is peanuts for you guys over the pond, but for some reason seems unsurmountable for us... :(
Nigel
Sun Dec 30 17:11:03 2007
What's on the menu, Lox? My brother and his wife are supposed to be coming tonight to spend New Year's with us, but my sister-in-law is sick so now the whole thing is in jeopardy.

Ha! Yes, that's not bad at all, Tom!! These new-gen Intel chips are the dogs' , aren't they? I actually just updated the Gigabyte system monitor, just in case I was getting false readings... Nope, 23-degrees at the moment... Mind you, I have to admit it would be hard to get that Thermaltake cooler into an iMac or MBP!! (Did you see my photo of it?)

Thu Dec 27 23:14:52 2007
Not bad at all! CPU in (this) MBP is at 37C. Not even hot enough to do my washing!

Mon Dec 24 17:36:51 2007
Yes, Christmas is for the kids, really, Lox. I'm too jaded...!
Tom: Yes, that had me confused for a bit... The new CPU isn't a Core2Duo but it *is* a dual-core Pentium, so strictly it isn't the same as in the iMac (RIP). I'm not terribly sure what the basic difference is. Perhaps a new (old?) die, and a desktop CPU as opposed to a mobile one? Hmmm... E2180 is the Intel part number.
Nigel
Mon Dec 24 11:15:56 2007
Nigel: Morning! Not really I never really liked Christmas all that much, although I think that when I will have kids things will change radically...
Lox
Mon Dec 24 09:05:54 2007
I'm not sure that the Core 2 Duo is actually technically a Pentium family processor anymore? :-)

Thu Dec 20 09:54:52 2007
Yes the phrase "myriad of sitcoms" sounds very familiar indeed. Ah, those were the days...
John
Wed Dec 19 22:00:09 2007
Well, I wasn't actually there, so this is really Johns anecdotal. It could have been an alcohol induced Anton Rodgers based hallucination :)
Kev
Wed Dec 19 21:25:42 2007
Kev- I remember an incident somewhat like that, but I'm unable to verify that it was Anton Rodgers. I recall that we all piled onto the train in the aforemention lagered-up state, and John said "Hey- it's that bloke from the telly". Well, I looked, but had no idea who he was. When I pressed John for more details, he said he couldn't recall the guy's name, but he'd been in "A myriad of sitcoms." I have spent some time sice then wondering if John should have said "He's been in a myriad of sitcoms" or just "He's been in myriad sitcoms." I've never bothered to check. Until now. It seems (according to dictionary.com, at least) that both forms are acceptable ... it can be used either as a noun or an adjective. RIP
Jimmy
Wed Dec 19 15:59:11 2007
Jimmy: weren't you there for that Anton Rodgers incident as well? I think it was Sean's leaving do, and the initial group had been wittled down to just four or five of us drinking in the Swan, prior to heading into Reading to continue the festivities. So we were waiting for a train at the station, and spotted the celebrity in question. Darren was of course the main perpetrator of the harassment that ensued. Poor old Anton, I'm not sure he ever really recovered from the trauma of being pursued at speed by a large and heavily lagered up software engineer.
John
Wed Dec 19 12:46:29 2007
Anton Rodgers popped his clogs on Saturday aged 74 apparently. No more chasing him down the hill from the station eh John!
Kev
Wed Dec 19 11:58:30 2007
Yes Rob, I understand, but I have never had an anti-PC stance. I love my Lian-Li too. I built it and, in my eyes, it's a thing of beauty. However, it is true, I liked my iMac, whether running OSX or Windows on it. They are bascially vertical laptops and so not intrinsically expandable. My comment was purely about my loss of a hugely expensive (for me) piece of my own personal IT equipment. My jocular comment about the right mouse-button was just a "brave-face", a "bon mot" I added to the end.
Nigel
Wed Dec 19 09:55:16 2007
John, as always explained it all very well. You can only read so many Anti-PC comments and see Anti-PC adverts on the telly.
Rob Lang
Wed Dec 19 08:55:51 2007
One of the nice things about working for a heavily Internet focused company like mine is the increasingly rather haughty disregard we give to what OS people use. More and more applications can be ran from inside a browser (bringing with it all the benefits of collaboration, remote access, distributed backups etc etc) and to that extent I hope over time the OS debate will eventually become irrelevant.
John
Tue Dec 18 23:19:41 2007
Hello Guys - Thanks :)
Yes screen-down from about desktop height to a wooden floor... Smashed screen. External monitor shows no boot-signs so I suspect more internal havoc. I guess the build is along the lines of a laptop so expect surface-mount and no easily replaceable chips. Maybe a cracked motherboard :( I'll open it up and hope to reclaim some components.
Perhaps it is covered by our house insurance...
In the mean time... It's a PC again. Luckily I'm still "well-stocked" in the garage department! :)
Nigel
Tue Dec 18 23:17:18 2007
Nigel: it is a bummer to hear about your Mac dying. I don't think Rob (who is incidentally a jolly nice chap, just like you are) was trying to revel in your misfortune, but was instead reacting to the somewhat anti-PC vibe that seems to have developed on the Maison over the past few months - and I have to admit I am as guilty as the next man for propagating this. Whenever a message board conversation involves some failing of a Windows PC we are all (myself included) somewhat ready to jump on this with detrimental comments about the platform. I believe Rob was just making a point in that regard.
John
Tue Dec 18 23:13:15 2007
Nigel: Well, I've only just got here after a day where my broadband was down. You have my commiserations about the demise of the iMac. Reading between the lines, the thing has presumably become the victim of the children after being used in the front room? Indoor football? I guess a smashed screen is probably as expensive as the whole unit... if it boots, you could use an external screen maybe..
tom
Tue Dec 18 22:53:28 2007
Nigel: What happened exactly to the Mac? As for the endless dispute I run happily a PC, a laptop and a Mac Book, I have to say the the latter is quite impressive, but good old PC cannot be beaten for game and hardware fiddling! :D
Lox
Tue Dec 18 22:37:33 2007
... it's also "funny" how I brought it on myself. Thinking I'd mention it among "friends" ... Maybe someone might just sympathise at losing a grands-worth of computer due to a domestic accident.... But no, I get a lecture on how stupid and environmentally unfriendly I was for making that hardware choice in the first place... Well, yes, stupid me, eh?
Nigel
Tue Dec 18 20:09:25 2007
Just realised Rob, you gave me a good pasting there, didn't you? I wonder what I have done to offend you?
Nigel
Tue Dec 18 19:25:16 2007
... oh, and now I have a good excuse to dismantle an iMac, see what's there and salvage HD, memory etc ...
Nigel
Tue Dec 18 16:28:49 2007
:) So true, Rob! However please note I've never claimed to be cool or superior in any way - far from it, I cut my hardware teeth on PCs (and as you probably guess have a garage still replete with PC spares!).
I think the reality is I'm a hardware freak and love the computing tech bit (as opposed to you software gurus) and can do most PC hardware stuff. I was attracted to Macs for the near "furniture" or "hifi" look as I had to have the computer in our living-room. That'll teach me! :D :D :D
Nigel
Tue Dec 18 16:27:15 2007
I had a problem with a PC some time ago from a hardware point of view, the bios battery on the MoBo had died. No idea why. So I opened it. Changed it. It worked again and has been ever since. Better than throwing it away. How hip and trendy is that? Fixing stuff rather than throwing it away. Very green. I wanted to play newer games so I swapped out just the graphics card and 6 months later the CPU. Better than buying a whole new computer. I just bought the bits I needed.
Oh, hang on, PCs aren't supposed to be trendy, sorry. I should tow the party line: "Oh I wish I was cool like Mac users are."
Rob Lang
Tue Dec 18 16:13:04 2007
... but you're right about the "reliability" bit as I can easily change this or that in my PC (remember the Lian-Li?) and relatively cheaply too...

Touche Rob!! ;))) :))) However I can't actually blame the hardware... just the software which runs around our house! The warranty claim would have been a cheeky non-starter I feel, but desperation brings out the worst in me...

The annoying thing the Mac was just (two-weeks) outside it's warranty period. However I can't really blame the machine itself - just our "domestic arrangements"... Ah-hem!
Anyway, I can't afford another one so it was back out to my garage to sort out a PC again... Hey-ho!

Dinosaurs are alive and well and walking the streets of Wrexham buying Christmas presents... :(
Nigel
Mon Dec 17 15:47:24 2007
John, I think in evolutionist Christmas religions, there weren't any dinosaurs due to the Earth only being 6 thousand years old. Hence the requirement beards and hats disguise. Write Ho-ho-ho next to their heads as well Jimmy, that should make it just fine.
Kev
Mon Dec 17 15:40:13 2007
jimmy, If you use coloured felt tip pens to draw little Santa hats and beards on them they will be fine.

I believe we can apply similar logic to the mysteries of why none of the wise men were Neanderthals and Mary didn't arrive in Bethlehem on the back of a woolly mammoth.
John
Mon Dec 17 13:15:33 2007
Jimmy: could the fact that the dinosaurs died out 65 million years before the birth of Christ be a limiting factor in their involvement in the festivities...?
John
Mon Dec 17 13:12:11 2007
Does anybody think dinosaurs are festive? I've got this wrapping-paper, you see. It's all covered in dinosaurs, but I need to wrap Christmas presents with it. It doesn't actaully *say* "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" ... so will it suffice? (I think dinosaurs at Christmas look quite fetching).

Blimey Tom - really glad you're in one piece! I'm no expert, but I get the impression these sorts of dizzy spells can come on for all sorts of reasons and judging by the amount of similar (although generally less hair raising) stories I've heard they affect lots of people. Definitely get yourself to the doctor, and take it easy for a while!
John
Mon Dec 10 23:37:30 2007
Gordon-Bennet Tom, that sounds horrible. Glad you were able to make safe before you "lost it". :( Could just be stress, or medication, or a combination. Happened a month or so back to a lady at work - well her hubby who is a Traffic Cop! They'd just pulled off the by-pass in to a retail park when he fainted at the wheel. Luckily only doing 20 or so... Never-the-less, straight across a (real!) round about - in traffic - and crashed into the perimeter fence of a college! Medical tests haven't showed anything so far... Off work though... Taking it easy ... (Hint-hint!)
Nigel
Mon Dec 10 23:20:57 2007
I felt better and then went home - about 2 miles. I've had a headache all evening and feel OK, but not fixed. Doctor tomorrow (IF I can get seen.)
tom
Mon Dec 10 23:13:10 2007
I knew I had to keep 'up' to turn off car, handbrake on, flashers on and get so that I would lie down if I did faint. You can die if you faint and are unable to lie flat; it's like hanging in a harness. Everything was black and woozy. I began to feel better as soon as I was lying down (of course). It was really scary with trucks and cars going past at 'just off the motorway' speed and my car essentially abandoned on the edge of the sliproad. (sticking out!)
tom
Mon Dec 10 23:12:18 2007
I could have died today. I was driving home on the M4 at 70mph. And I began to feel faint. By the time I had cut through the lanes of traffic, slowed and pulled off (luckily into the services sliproad!), I was basically blind. I just about (I mean JUST) about stayed conscious.

John, no. Except the last time I was on an airliner was en route to a friend's stag do. The stag is an airline pilot. And so were the other 5 people I was sitting with. Quite educational, they can tell you what all the different clunks and grinds are and gave scores for the landing.

Kev
Mon Dec 10 13:33:42 2007

It's the fact that it is programmatic and very easy to modify from script. Change the URL and you can colour in Italy, France etc as well. For example, if we just added a "which country do you live in" field to the add message page, we could very easily write a script that would display that image highlighting all the countries in the world from which people have posted messages. I'm not aware of any other existing techology on the web that would have let you do that off the shelf, without a lot of pissing about.

It's superb. I love it to death. Charting is a bane. With SVC being so poorly supporting and .NET giving only lipservice to charting, Google have done it again. BRAVO! I'll be using this for generating stats in the next version of my online game, Chom Isis.

Tom: I envy you guys, at least you are doing something that you like and you are a recognized professional each one in his position. Me I thought I was but in the last year and half I have just gotten more dents to my professional pride than anything... Oh well... :(

I've just changed the FTP password for the Maison and I can log in ok now.
John
Thu Dec 6 14:48:50 2007
They sent out an e-mail a while ago about the fact that they thought the passwords might have been hacked, asking everyone to change passwords asap. Guess if you didn't change it they're sending you a new one anyway?
Simon
Thu Dec 6 12:57:12 2007
lol seems all their passwords were hacked, turns out they didn't bother to encrypt any of the passwords they were storing. Quite unbelievable.
Kev
Thu Dec 6 12:49:46 2007
Hmm, looks like Fasthosts are sending out new passwords by post. link
Have you got it sorted yet John, or are you still locked out ?

Ah, I remember Lille, le Chat Bleu chocolate shop, the statue of the little lacemaker, the Sunday market.... the police station where we had to wait three hours to report my stolen purse and missed our dinner...., AND I had to help the very young policeman with his typing!

Rob Lang
Tue Dec 4 14:13:30 2007
Thanks Rob - it sounds very tempting. Will have a word with the Mrs. As for the pewter tankards, they were more of a mediaeval tavern ilk, than of the crusty old man variety.
John
Tue Dec 4 13:21:16 2007
Pewter tankard? Really? Were you wearing a smoking jacket?
Rob Lang
Tue Dec 4 11:00:18 2007

Amazingly no hangover this morning by the way - I was drinking beer out of a pewter tankard, I think there may be something in that.

Tom, if thats "Why is stumble upon great?" - actually I was being sarcastic - stumbleupon being the epitome of the pointlessness of most of the internet!

John just looking on their website it appears theres several contenders too, MobyDock, ObjectDock, RK Launcher. Surely someone must have made something similar for the Mac, ( if the current one isn't as good ?? )
Kev
Mon Dec 3 15:34:23 2007
Yep! :)

The UI is taken from the Mac, but in terms of the functionality it looks a bit smarter than what the Mac dock does.
John
Mon Dec 3 13:58:08 2007
jimmy, yep, i quite like rocketdock too, (an idea stolen from Macs of course). I found it whilst stumbling :)

Mon Dec 3 13:34:11 2007
Kev- that's very interesting. It's not me like to use desktop gadgets, but I think I might stick with it for a while ...

All I have to say is rocketdock.com
Kev
Sun Dec 2 14:07:21 2007
Lox: there will probably be bugger all in the way of new features. As a project it has got to the point where it is pretty much crippled and very hard to innovate with - apparently the codebase is a complete mess. Time for a new browser methinks!
John
Sun Dec 2 13:42:37 2007
I never use Safari, always a Firefox person... Heard the news about the FF 3.0 beta being delayed... ? What new features are we going to see in the next release?
Lox
Sun Dec 2 11:35:33 2007
It is quite impressive though - all the widgets look Mac-ish and everything. It's almost like running some kind of VM.
John
Sun Dec 2 10:52:06 2007
...although having said that I always use Firefox on the Mac (not because I particularly like it or anything, it's just for the sake of consistency really).
John
Sun Dec 2 10:50:32 2007
Ah.... using Safari now. Suddenly the world seems a saner, safer place.
John
Sun Dec 2 10:49:12 2007
Morning all. I'm secretly installing Safari for Windows on Chie's PC. I'm going to bring her over to the Mac side one app at a time, if that's what it takes...
