Hmmm yes I read an article on the whole getting-February-29th-off-work issue, with some bemusement. I can't say it really bothers me - months are variable length entities anyway, if anything I feel like "normal" Februaries are short changing somebody or other.

"Work for Free"? Anathema! But I guess you mean leap-year day etc, Kev? Here, in Wales it's Go Red for Wales day, apparently. I thought "Go Red" was the AIDS charity idea, but... What do I know?

I sometimes wonder why I bother to come to work. Traffic this morning was awful due to an accident at the end of the M1, which throws all the traffic on our little local roads. Took me half an hour to get to work (about 2 miles). Still better than being at home as they are resurfacing our road today. Then that little blue envelope arrives at the end of the month and I remember why. (holidays - Cyprus Sunday week - bits for grandchildren; nice meals; new carpets.

My printer is Epson, and uses Durabrite ink - I print a lot of posters both on plain paper and glossy - its supposed to be waterproof. Cartridge World now supply Durabrite ink as refills.
John's Mum
Tue Feb 26 14:37:44 2008
IMHO cheap inks are fine if all you want is to print out a few documents etc, but if you want to do photo prints that won't fade after a year, you really do need to get matching inks and paper i.e of the same brand like Epson ( if thats your printers make ).
Kev
Tue Feb 26 13:52:11 2008
John, go into John Lewis Partnership in central London, tell the saleman what you want and he/she will do the rest. I can gaurantee their service and knowledge, and lowest price policy. Go for a printer that takes one black and three separate colour cartridges. As for re-fill cartridges, locate your nearest Cartridge World Store (find it online first). If not convenient, they will post. Don't ever, EVER, pay full price for cartridges/ink. I only pay £6 for a colour one, f'rinstance.

It's only me... Well, Joc gets most use out of a £20 HP ink-jet printer. Cartridges (genuine) from Ebay when needed. Lovely! Me? Well I've got a Brother 5150D Laser... Marvellous, and laser's can be had for less than £100 now... Except the consumables. For mine a drum and toner will be... oh around £100. So when this set runs out I'll just dump the printer and probably by an ink-jet, for all the use I give it...
Nigel
Mon Feb 25 23:49:55 2008
Kev: when are you going to chime in and tell me what to buy?
John
Mon Feb 25 23:00:47 2008
...and Amazon tells me people who bought a particular model of printer also bought the printer cartridges for that printer. Gobsmacking.
John
Mon Feb 25 22:54:38 2008
...but hey the websites do tell me the range of humidity in which those printers can operate. Isn't that useful?
John
Mon Feb 25 22:53:10 2008
....oh and then there's the bloody user reviews, and just like every other set of user reviews on the web precisely 50% of the people give it the highest possible score, while the other 50% give it the lowest possible score - which, as we all know, by the law of entropy means in aggregate they are providing absolutely no useful information whatsoever.
John
Mon Feb 25 22:51:01 2008
...and the names are all crap - I mean, what exactly am I suppose to glean from the model being a "C5180" as opposed to a "D7360".
John
Mon Feb 25 22:40:34 2008
...and all of those sites are so messy as well!
John
Mon Feb 25 22:38:15 2008
Hmmm... have looked on Amazon, ebuyer and dabs, and none of them let me limit my search by a set of features / price range - what I want is something networked, Mac friendly, compact, and under 100 quid. I'm really surprised by how primitive those sites are that I can't just specify those requirements and have it all over and done with in about five minutes.
John
Mon Feb 25 22:37:05 2008
So on an unrelated note, how on earth do you go about choosing a printer? We want something to have at home, mostly for printing off all those ticket confirmations for various things (planes / buses / trains, even whisky exhibitions) that seem to just assume you have a printer... but the range is a bit overwhelming and I can't really see anything that clearly distinguishes one over the other.
John
Mon Feb 25 22:27:57 2008

Actually, Lox, I *do* like large, passive coolers, maybe with a slow-running fan attached for insurance (see my own CPU cooler in a previous post!). I looked at some for my own project, but graphics performance really still needs a fan... And despite my "scoffing", I actually think the Peltier idea is the most scientifically elegant. You just have to be careful of condensation and frost!!! Oh, and it needs a little more active development.
Nigel

Noisy fans are a bain of modern life! (There. Dramatic, sweeping statement!) But aren't they just? We have all this hyper-sophisticated, computing power cooled by simple, mechanical NOISY fans. Phht! Well Tom, I finally sussed the Parallels Tools problem of earlier - annoyingly simple when I realisation dawned :( The Tools don't give so much functionality to Linux - just the seemless mouse movement. No auto-screen-res it seems (Posting this from Mandriva, but tried Ubuntu too) Still, I just reconfigured X-server for 1280x800 in full-screen and it look mighty fine!

Tom: Have you ever installed Parallels Tools for Linux in a Linux distro, successfully? I can't figure what I'm doing awry. I've tried Suse, Ubuntu, Freespire and Mandriva. I've no problem mounting the image; I can either open a terminal window session, or boot straight in without loading a desktop. I can log in as Admin, or use SUDO. When I run the app, it starts fine and gives the initial message to close running apps and save data, asks me if I want to Continue Y/N - and then loops at this point and goes nowhere!
Have I missed something? Thanks for any pointers!

Mon Feb 11 15:37:20 2008
We have a lift in our building, which seems to out of order more often than working. And would you believe that one of the reasons given by the lift company was that the oil got cold at the weekend, so they installed a small heater in the lift shaft, and guess what, it still broke down at the weekend. More likely the uncontrolled kids playing in it. So it was the stairs for me again this morning. :(
Mad Mumsie
Mon Feb 11 11:23:09 2008
But the ones who work higher up presumably are...? And they are the ones who rode the buckaroo lift!!! :p
tom
Mon Feb 11 10:16:23 2008
(I would like to hastily point out that we share our building with some other companies, and the inept facilities staff on the ground floor are not employees of my company)
John
Mon Feb 11 09:49:49 2008
So it turns out people who work in offices in London have very little regard for human life (including their own). I got in the lift just now, and after starting to go up a bit there was a sharp shudder, then some worrying noises, followed by the little LCD display inside the lift displaying an emergency message, and an alarm went off. Luckily moments later the lift door opened and we were able to get out. The fellow occupants of my lift rather nonchalantly shrugged their shoulders and went and got in another lift. I thought somebody ought to at least mention it to the facilities people in the building who promptly did nothing. Other people then tried to get back in the dangerous lift, and I warned them off it, so they let the doors close and waited for another... but then the same one came back and they just shrugged their shoulders and got in. It seems given a choice between a real and present danger of a serious accident, or having to wait another minute for a lift, the former is universally a more attractive option. Bloody idiots!

I hope Big Sis and Boo enjoyed their pancakes!

Crap - why couldn't somebody have more usefully reminded me about pancake day before it happened? I had to hush up the whole affair last night, if word got out to Chie that everyone else in the country was eating pancakes apart from her there would have been hell to pay. It'll probably crop up in a conversation at her office today, and she'll come home tonight and beat me to death with a frying pan.
John

Actually when I told Chiara about this use that you have in England, she complained because she would have liked a pancake night and the fact that I didn't know about it meant that we had fillet and salad "only" !!! Is there any other special night (excluding Burns night and of course YIKES EVENING) that I should be aware of?

Well I am aware of pancakes and the like, but it's the first time that I read about Shove Tuesday and all... Oh well, there are many more obscure things that I probably have never heard about, although the guys at Radstock did a great job with me.. I mean, how many foreigners can joke about Jammy Dodgers having infinite jam? Lox, sorry to hear about your HD woes, have you considered getting a 16GB Memory stick or once of the 8GB solid state drives> I know the capacities not as big but they are less likely to break. fwiw I am suprised your disk lasted as long as it did, HDs are just not really designed for knocks and bumps I think, which is a bit rubbish as they are usually sold as "portable" devices but in reality they really mean external.
Kev
Tue Feb 5 14:56:34 2008
Nigel: Mmmmm MTBF, I am not sure... Well it's the HD that travels with me all around the world, so it has been subject to high pressures, shakes, sometimes falls, so I cannot complain if it died on me. It's just a shame because now I need to buy a new one, and if it died 3 days ago I probably would have bought it in Thailand where are darn cheaper than here!

Bryan
Mon Feb 4 19:59:24 2008
Bryan: Thanks I'll give it a go! The problem is that the unit is not recognized by the computer, so there is technically very little to scavenge as the drives are not mounted... :( But I'll try...
Lox
Mon Feb 4 17:34:47 2008
Lox: the software available from QueTek (called File Scavenger) may be of help to you - I have used it to recover data from a non-operational hard drive and it is a godsend, and cheap too. The address is wwwDOTquetekDOTcomFORWARDSLASHprod02DOThtm (seems I can't post html here...). Hope this helps!

Nothing at all... I was copying a large amount of files (15 gigs) from the mac to the HD and it stopped working... Now it power up but I can hear the head spinning the drive as if it was damaged... I am afraid that something happened during the copy, it locked the mac (hard reste, quite rare) and ruined the unit... :(
Lox
Mon Feb 4 16:42:51 2008
Hmm. A recent model, or old? Did you drop, or has it just stopped working? Some recent models have an sudden-shock locking mech. Any noise on power-up, or USB plug-in? Common though, is an internal cable displacement due to a drop...

Kev: you sound a bit "rich" :) :) I suspect you probably have Krugerands under the bed!! :) :) ... I just read the Telegraph article with interest as I have couple of friends in Iceland. It certainly does seem an unfeasibly rich country considering there are only 330,000 inhabitants whose primary industries are fishing and minerals. Their quality of life (living standards etc) is much higher than our own it seems. The only thing they miss is sunshine in winter, and walks in the park (as we know it). Your UK banks are covered for upto 35K in each account. Foreign banks esp the iclandic ones are a little more flakey
and may not be covered.
Things are pretty bad in the banking world right now I think, you only need to look at the egg situation,
161,000 customers being told to f-off ( Egg is owned by Citibank who have recently had big writedowns)
Some of the Monoline insurers looking like they are going to get downgraded, some already have been.
If what we get told about is only a tenth of the problem( which I suspect it is ) I would suggest
buying some gold coins and getting a shotgun :)
Kev
Sat Feb 2 15:05:07 2008
...so I think what I did gleen from that article is that banks offering very high rates on savings accounts are actually doing so because they're really short of capital, possibly even verging on bankruptcy, and therefore your money is at risk. So really when choosing a savings account you should look at the bigger picture - I guess effectively you can factor in some metric for risk into the equation.
John
Sat Feb 2 13:27:11 2008
Thanks Kev - I didn't fully understand that article but I think it is probably very pertinent. I was right in the midst of moving a big load of cash out of one of the banks it suggests is a safe bet, and into one of the ones it identifies as a potential risk! Hmmm perhaps I won't move any more for the time being then. I think I'm already fairly safe in terms of the not-putting-all-of-your-eggs-in-one-basket theory, currently my "financial assets" are spread between about 7 different accounts on 3 continents, albeit that this is just the way it has ended up (having worked abroad for multinationals etc) rather than any particular prudence on my part.

Hmmm, reading the article seems to imply a history going on there. Didn't know companies wrote each other letters like that! It's one heck of a price though, isn't it? I guess it shows the big "M" are worried about the big "G" in the long term.

So apparently Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo then? Not sure if there was writing on the wall about that, but it certainly comes as a bit of a surprise to me.
