One of the papers I submitted a couple of months ago was rejected, I just heard. I'm pretty fucked off about it, I got some pretty patronising reviews which is always extremely annoying because these things are anonymous so I can't even argue the point. Oh well. Having tried recently to claw back some enthusiasm for my PhD I think I sodding well hate it again now.

Many other people were having exactly those same thougths yesterday Tom. You almost certainly should still be able to use your ITV Digital box for the free to air channels, and the chances of them coming to collect it are exceedingly minimal (but not totally impossible).
John
- Thu Mar 28 13:58:42 2002

If ITV-Digital "rent" these boxes and go bust, will they go around and collect the lot? I doubt it. So can the ITVDig boxes be used with the BBC digital programming?

Simon
- Thu Mar 28 07:53:53 2002

Digital tv stuff:-
Even if Itv-Digital do go belly up, the bbc will still keep broadcasting their DTT(digital terrestrial) stuff. There is a new 100 quid DTT box that is coming out very shortly, which should increase take-up of DTT in general, as at the moment it is practically impossible to buy a set top box to recieve DTT (most people 'rent' theirs from Itv-Digital). Plus the government is far too keen on DTT taking off to let it die out.

DSP: oddly, i'm in the same boat as simon, in that i'm actually trying to make things more documented etc... I'm trying to argue for having a "maintainer" for each project we work on, who maintains a "stable" cvs branch of the software we're working on, and rejects patches that are too wanky. This is mainly my reaction to their being an influx of crap programmers on the project I'm working on at the moment.

you’ve ever been burned like me applying for dumb home work jobs only to find out there’s some kind of catch or they want you to pay money before they give you the job, then you should for sure go to www.homeworkers.org/index.html. They even have a story about home jobs scams. I really trust they have legitimate work at home companies

Hamilton, Canada - Thu Mar 28 00:29:03 2002

It's all an evil conspiracy, the government has (allegedly) already sold the analogue airspace to wireless technology companies (principally for mobile phones). The government might end up in a sitaution where it is forced to buy some people free set top boxes when the analogue signal gets turned off, but this is relatively small cash considering how much it made from all that heavy duty bandwidth flying about all over the place and giving us all brain tumours.
John
- Wed Mar 27 16:44:35 2002

John: Why? Will they be able to get everyone to get a digital receiver, particularly if it requires a dish or cable? Or is Sky going to transmit on something that could be received via a normal(ish) aerial?

dsp
- Wed Mar 27 14:21:59 2002

Hey boys and girls, ITV Digital has just gone into administration. This has a number of interesting consequences:
  1. Could threaten the BBC's existence, as it could result in them basically only transmitting through proprietary formats (i.e. Sky and NTL). Are people really going to pay license fees if the license alone won't actually let them watch BBC...?
  2. The ITV Sport channel will probably close almost immediately (yeah, like I care).
  3. A load of football clubs (including Blackpool and Reading) will face bankruptcy.
  4. Rupert Murdoch will rule the world.
  5. No more monkey.

I've been to Edinburgh a few times now - it's brilliant. The architecture is really nice, there's some really good restaurants, it's quite easy to find your way round, all the pubs open late and (although it's a bit of a cliche) the people are really friendly - the first time I went we sat at a table minding our own business and loads of people came and sat down and talked to us. This sort of thing is pretty rare in the south east.

dsp
- Wed Mar 20 13:57:25 2002

Apparently DVB modulators are really expensive. Analogue modulators on the other hand are dirt cheap. So, for example, you could have a PC receiving DVB then outputting a few channels of decoded analogue TV down an aerial lead to distribute to any old TV in your house.

In all fairness to nutscrape it is a rule in XHTML 1.0 that each < thing> has to have either a </ thing> or alternatively like a line break should be <br /> . Also it is a rule that they should all be lower case, (This is a secondary pointless fact).

Jon E

dsp
- Mon Mar 11 13:27:07 2002

Opera had the same problem with the <p> tags which backs up my point that they're actually sticking to the rules where IE isn't... The basic root of the problem is HTML - it is a really messy language with no decent structure to it.
John
- Mon Mar 11 12:31:34 2002

And I can vouch for you.

- Mon Mar 11 12:31:16 2002

There we go, it ought to look better in Netscape now.
John
- Mon Mar 11 12:29:13 2002

Hmmm I think the issue with the board is more an IE problem - I think Netscape is trying to interpret the page in a much more structured way, which, unfortunately, due to some cacky HTML (misuse of <p> tags) makes it all wrong. IE relies on the principal that people don't really have a clue how to write decent well formed documents and just formats them however it thinks they probably ought to look.
John
- Mon Mar 11 12:21:05 2002

Rowanboy: Config files? Unix boy! It's all in the registry under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stuffware\Photo Studio. You probably want the "Browse Window" section Alternatively, you could temporarily rename the directory with your really unwieldy, disorganised, over the top collection of images, or take some of them out. Or actually split them up into manageable and meaningful sub directories. Or get some more RAM. Or a whole new better PC. Interestingly, the newer version detects that there was a crash on a previous run during startup, and asks you if want to choose a different directory to browse. However, this must not be in the version on the web I assume (although I had thought it was - are you sure you're using the most recent one available)....?

Rob Lang <sooty@bullet-systems.com>
Thales Research, Reading - Tue Mar 5 16:37:14 2002

It is best to do it from the browse window (the thing on the left hand side of the window). Select the image(s) you want to thumbnail, right click and choose create external thumbnails. A dialog should pop up with two pages. In the first page (Scale) a good group of settings is something like:

  • Scale mode: Frame dimensions
  • Filter: Box
  • Frame mode: Best fit
  • Dimensions: 160 x 120
I'm guessing your problem is on the second page (thumbnail files). The output directory ought to be set automatically to (current directory)\thumbs. You want to make the output file something like %s.jpg - this means it will use the file name from the source file, but wnsure the extension is .jpg.

Surely the Kernel source ought to be included on my two distribution CDs...?
John
- Mon Mar 4 17:55:24 2002

There seems to be a link to it from redhat here... Not that i'm an expert in navigating the redhat site, just good at hitting google
Graf <Graf@altavista.net>
- Mon Mar 4 17:54:01 2002

Allegedly, I need kernel-source-2.4.9-7.i386.rpm, although I can't seem to download it from redhat's site.
John
- Mon Mar 4 17:10:12 2002

Come to think of it, you could just say sod it to the redhat package stuff and just download the source and untar it into /usr/src/linux. Find out which kernel version you are running and download it from Kernel.org. It probably only needs modules.h or whatever so it knows how to form a module that can be inserted into the current kernel.
Graf <graf@altavista.net>
- Mon Mar 4 16:52:29 2002

I don't really know the redhat way of doing things, but it's normally worthwhile to build your own kernel to suit the hardware in your machine. Theres a nice menu based configurer, so all you have to do is untar the source, then do "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" depending if you want an X based menu or just a console based one.

Alternatively, you can look for an rpm with the source of the kernel you are running on rpmfind.net - i just searched for "kernel source" and got a bizallion hits so you'll need to pick the one for your kernel version - "uname -a" should tell you iirc. This way is probably a lot easier actually.
Graf <graf@altavista.net>
- Mon Mar 4 16:31:37 2002

Why is Debian's UK mirror all in Japanese?
John
- Mon Mar 4 15:43:53 2002

Andy, I'm using Redhat. Maybe it was the wrong choice? It installed really nicely, but I got really stumped when actually trying to do what I wanted with it. I want to build a driver for my dvb-t card. The source code for the driver needs to have the linux kernel sources in /usr/src/linux or something. I messed around for ages at the weekend trying to find the right package to get them in there and totally failed in the end. I've downloaded some documentation from the web but have a feeling when I get home I'm just going to fail all over again. Maybe I'm just not such a linuxy person after all...
