NTL aren't too bad around here. They tried to skank us by putting the lowest grade cable in but the connection was pretty appalling. So we complained. Got straight through to the head of NTL Home and made him come to our house and test the levels. On their tests a reading between -2 and 5 is acceptable, ours was -7. He said sorry and gave us top grade cable. He even insisted that we have it shielded. He really was a lovely man. It's been good ever since. It connects at around 350-420kbps, not quite the promised 512 but that's probably down to the USB connection. There's downtime every few weeks, but that usually occurs between 2am-5am and is really only a problem if you happen to be downloading movies all night. *cough* Speaking of which, there appear to be no limits on the amount i've downloaded. This week alone i've stolen 18 films at 700+ mb each. Then there are the mp3's and the copious doses of pornography... erm, so yeah, overall: NTL Nottingham are not too bad.

DON'T GO WITH NTL (NTHELL)

They are charlatans of the first order. The service is terrible, they put caps on the amount you can download, the customer service is awful, you never get the bandwidth they promise and they smell.
We're disgusted by them, frankly. We're going with an ADSL line, which comes down the phone line from erm... I think pipex or someone. It's very good but you do need BT to upgrade the exchange.
NTL are bastards, let them burn in hell.
Rob Lang
- Thu Mar 27 11:06:26 2003

We had the same thing in my little village. Lots of people campaigned to get Broadband, and BT have just turned it on. Surely though once it is on at the exchange, you can use any old ISP (Freeserve, Demon etc). I have heard good ish things about Demon broadband.
John
- Thu Mar 27 10:22:13 2003

OK geeks, I need some advice.....we want to get broadband for when I'm on maternity so that I can keep in touch with people and stay sane. At the moment our only provider is NTL but BT are promising to upgrade our exchange if more people show an interest. Do any of you have any feelings (positive or negative) about Bt vs NTL? We'll also be looking to buy a laptop as we don't have space for a big computer and I was wondering if any of you had any recommendations.

Well Byrnie, shit happens I guess. Let me tell you a story. When I was about 11 years old, I was on a ferry to France. The sea was very rough, and I'd eaten something dodgy (possibly badly cooked sausages). Anyhow, I felt I was about to be sick, and ran to the edge of the boat. It was very windy, and a fair amount of it blew back and, I believe, made contact with a couple of innocent bystanders. I think this is possibly an exceedingly long term bit of karma returning to bite me in the arse. I suppose the thing about being sick is that no-one does it by choice, and you seldom have much control over it. The cleaning was pretty horrendous but, as my Dad would say, it's character building.

Uncle Rob - christ, there's a terrifying thought. Mind you, we have booked him for babysitting duties for the next 20 odd years. I think this glowing stuff is total bollocks - unless glowing means you look like death (the lack of sleep starts early as you're always going to the loo in the night!)

Rob Lang

Why is it that small alterations to your web page can sometimes take bloody ages. Last night, I added Javascript windows to my art section (so the art pops up in nice neat custom-windows, rather than in a whole new browser) and it took forever cut and pasting and such. Madness!

It's probably wise not to have IMoods for some of the moods I get into. I have also found it is a little time consuming to set the thing. If we had girlies on the maison, it would have to fluctuate at random. Speaking of girlies, why don't any of the girlfriends post here? It's not like everything here is nerdy or blokey, is it?

When I try to open the excel file, I receive a message saying that the file type is not valid. It's an .xls and shows up when I do a search for Microsoft Excel files. Any clues why? Also, for the password above, if I post HTML, do I use the password I use to log on to FTP? I'm apparently clueless.
