I would be surprised, even a bit annoyed, if anyone did know who he was in America - they don't even know what football is!

Its incredible that they changed their mind about David Beckam because no-one in America knew who he was.

I had forgotten that phrase... I too have enjoyed XSLT a lot recently. There's actually quite a lot of it lurking about on the 'Maison now. The 'Maison RSS aggregator uses it to turn RSS into HTML. Also my pictures page is XSL-tastic. The details for each set of pictures are stored as XML, from which both the HTML for the index page, and the XML for the RSS feed can be derived using just XSLT. Nerdy satisfaction is quite high.

Thanks Tim! Lorenzo is doing well I reckon. I did have a bit of Lorenzo's sister's easter egg, which was Swiss in fact, so Italy cannot take any credit for its quality. I don't think Italy is particularly famous for chocolate - it's more the preserve of Switzerland and Belgium... Although I'm sure Lorenzo will claim Italy taught these other countries all they know, given a chance.

I got the impression availability was very limited so I've gone ahead and bought those tickets - I hope this is OK Lorenzo! So as I say, we'll be arriving on Saturday, and going back on Tuesday... Oddly, we'll be flying from the airport I lived next door to for 17 years, but have never actually flown from before. Again, sorry for not confirming this first but I thought I might lose the ticket if I waited...!
John
- Tue Apr 15 17:41:08 2003
The only deal worth considering that I have found so far is flying out on Saturday and back on Tuesday... of course this would be contingent on me and Chie being able to take days off from work at short notice, which might not be possible... Provisionally would this be any good for you Lorenzo...?
John
- Tue Apr 15 16:57:19 2003
I will go back on friday at best, unfortunately I have to work until then... We are a bit tight with the timing unfortunately... Anyways let me check with my mother, you check the flights and then we make a decision, if worst come to the worst we can postpone the trip to the summer (nicer weather here)...
Lox
- Tue Apr 15 16:35:03 2003
Thanks Lorenzo! It's not very likely but I thought just on the off chance we could get a reasonably priced flight, although realistically we have probably left it too late. Still, I will have another look around on the web and see if anything comes up. Both me and Chie have to work Thursday and Tuesday, so the earliest we could make it is Thursday night, and the latest we would go back is Monday... However I guess it will be largely dictated by the availability of flights (if any!).
John

I mean there's no problem at all, of course, the only issue might be how many beds do we have at home, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Re statue pulling down - watched a very interesting Time Watch programme set in the City of London, where they dug up an arm of a statue and figured that it had been pulled down at the end of the Roman era, smashed up and thrown down a well - nothing changes!!

Also, for DivX encoding I use Mencoder (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/encoding.html) which does 2 pass encoding, although there is also transcode (http://www.theorie.physik.uni-goettingen.de/~ostreich/transcode/) which I used to convert some mpegs into vcd format last night, but I haven't tried DivX on that yet.
On windows, vidomi (http://vidomi.com/) is ok - very easy to use but not sure if the results are the best or not. Plus it wins points for reading tivo-ripped streams directly
Graf
- Wed Apr 9 12:21:35 2003
Is the original video camera -> pc convertion ok quality wise? If not, my tivo is quite good at making mpegs, or if you can get me the tape before the weekend I can get it put on DVD for you. Which you can then rip in the conventional manner.

There are probably some quite in depth tutorials available on the web. Just search for "VirtualDub capture DivX", or something like that.
John
- Wed Apr 9 10:14:34 2003
Generally speaking, get VirtualDub. I think to make DivX work at its best you need to do a two (or more) pass compression. It's probably best if you capture originally (using VirtualDub) to an uncompressed format - YUY2 or something if your capture card supports it. Then load your (huge) captured AVI back into VirtualDub, select your compression method of choice (DivX, 1st pass), and then save it as a different AVI file. Then go to 2nd pass and save it out again...

Ok. I'm trying to import one of the wedding videos into my PC via my WinTV PCI (quite old). It's an analogue camcorder, so I can't just copy the data in. I've been playing with the DivX codec and getting pretty crap results. I may have to resort to raw, but the file size will be obscene... ideas???

Hey guys, sorry for not mentioning it before, but it was only finalised yesterday - I'm moving to Tibet in two weeks time. It was bit of a snap decision, but it was a once in a lifetime sort of opportunity I couldn't miss. I'm going to spend a few months studying in a monastery in Rol-Ipafol. It's a very small village in a remote mountainous area of Northern Tibet. After that, I'll just see how it goes. A friend of my uncle's lives there already, so I've got a place to stay and everything... it's all sorted out really! I guess Tom's wedding will be a good chance to say goodbye to you all...
