No work tomorrow, or not here anyway, working in the Polling Station - a portacabin outside Mill Hill East Station, complete with portable loo. NICE ! Start at 6.15 am and finish just after 10pm. What I do for my country :)

Call that satisfaction, because I don't! Oh, what it must be like to be fast and cool like those C-class posers, driving around in their Supercharged API's... :( )

Sheri: Actually no, there is no diamond ring involved in the picture at the moment... I mean if I have to propose I will never choose SLOVENIA as a venue but something a bit more romantic! Yes, I agree John. Not Microsoft's fault as such. Developers should offer the preference to stop sys-tray resource-hogs. Some do, but too many don't. Having to resort to RegEdit to correct this is a pain...
Nigel
Mon Apr 21 09:49:28 2008
I had to go back to using XP (from OS X) at the weekend to fix some stuff on Mum's computer. Startup tasks. Now they're a complete pain aren't they? Have a PC for a year and your system tray will be full up of useless little icons, that you have no real idea what they do, and each one of them will probably represent a piece of software which is pointlessly slowing your computer down. Now that would be OK, if there was a standard way of getting rid of them but alas there isn't. Some of the better behaved citizens you can just right click on to get some preferences menu where you can stop them launching at startup. Some of them though it seems the only way to disable them is uninstall the software - and then often the name of the software in the Add/Remove programs window has no real bearing on the name (or icon) of the item in the system tray. That little tool called MsConfig appeared to be a step in the right direction, but it seems it won't make any permanent changes, it'll just let you temporarily disable startup items for diagnostic purposes. I suppose you can't entirely blame Microsoft for this - I'm sure they publish "best practice" guides and so on, but the unscrupulous application developers just choose not to follow them.
John
Mon Apr 21 09:22:17 2008

Thanks all! We went to a Japanese restaurant in town called Wa. The food was great but the best thing was a dumb gaijin woman who was spouting very loudly out how multicultural she was for knowing conversational japanese. She thanked the waiter with Konnichiwa (Hello), told her friend that Konnbanwa (Good evening) was Hello and Sayonara (goodbye) was actually "don't mention it." I nearly spat rice over my bento at that one. The best thing was that there was no way the waiter was Japanese. He was clearly of Indonesian descent. Made my night. Once home, I uploaded the latest version of Chom Isis and toyed with that for a bit.

Yes, there are 10 types of people in this world - those who understand binary, and those who don't.

John, I take it you know it's binary. It wouldn't have struck me had I not been reading about duodecimal systems today in Jorge Luis-Borges for a class called Philosophy in Literature. I'm not a programming guy so I don't get to do binary very often, logic aside.

John: I still haven't decided where to put my isa this year.
I was thinking about either Alliance and Leicester 6.25%
Not too likely to get into trouble (although they are prime candidates along with Bradford and Bingley because of
their BTL lending).
Halifax do a Fixed rate 6.0% for 1 year and allow transfers but you have to put it all in in one go.
You need a websaver also with them to allow access. On balance Halifax seem a better choice for me anyway.
This is interesting.... how safe is your money It does a cross
comparison with banks that own each other to see if you are covered by the FSA guarantee,
e.g Cahoot and Abbey ( same bank only one 35K )
Kev
Wed Apr 16 13:39:02 2008
Kev: where would you recommend for this year's ISA? Last year I opted for a high interest (but also high risk) Icelandic bank, this year I would like to choose a bank with much less chance of going bust, but still want to get a fairly decent interest rate - where do you consider the sweet spot to be?

Hi all!
Well John, as I prefer "Free" to £40, I use Smultron. However, of course, I'm no pro and so don't need it for work. It just seems rather magnificent to me - andit's easy to spot the strawberry! :D

I hate myself for mentioning it but have you tried TextMate? It seems to be the holy grail of Mac text editors - at least if you believe any Ruby programmer.
Simon
Tue Apr 15 12:01:06 2008
Simon: very funny! (although I hate to split hairs, but I have passed through Llanfairpwllgwyngogogoch a couple of times and am fairly sure there is no Burger King there). Anywho, I went and voted for Programmer's Notepad, although given that I have barely used Windows at all in the last year-and-a-bit I can't really call myself a regular user any more. I have yet to find a text editor I am completely happy with on Linux or OSX - I use Visual SlickEdit on Linux, although it has lots of things I don't like about it. I use TextWrangler on the Mac, which I guess does the job fairly well, but I don't have a huge volume of affection for it.

You'll need to factor in market specifics John. You're strategic vectors are not in synergy with your potential. If I were you, I'd aim to leverage existing baselined workflows to build a holistic to-market approach.

I really enjoyed it Kev. I've often been of the opinion that humour has a fashion associated with it, and something written as a comedy 100+ years ago wouldn't still be funny today... but actually, although some of the jokes didn't really work any more, quite a lot of it was still genuinely very amusing. Plus the sets, costumes etc were all quite nice, and it was actually quite a nice theatre - we bought the cheapest possible seats which apparently means you get put right on the front row.
