I guess if you were to describe a whisk[e]y as prenolic you'd have to be pretty certain about its chemical composition.
dsp
- Mon May 19 16:51:50 2003
Tim, it seems your definition hits the nail on the head. From dictionary.com:
A caustic, poisonous, white crystalline compound, C6H5OH, derived from benzene and used in resins, plastics, and pharmaceuticals and in dilute form as a disinfectant and antiseptic. Also called carbolic acid.
John
- Mon May 19 16:47:01 2003
Also, I think in whiskey the drying process doesn't use peat, it's more often wood or charcoal or something. Peat is very important in Scotch, apparently.
John
- Mon May 19 16:42:07 2003
Nice one John, does Phenolic mean tastes like TCP? (the antiseptic, not the protocol)
dsp
- Mon May 19 16:35:45 2003
Whisky = made from malt, i.e. from Scotland. Whiskey = made from rye (like a bourbon), i.e. from Ireland or America. I'm really fond of the Islay malts - Laphroaig, Ardbeg and so on. The peat is pretty unique there, it's flavoured with seaweed. So Islay malts tend to taste seaweedy, quite smokey, very full, and, my favourite word, phenolic.

dsp
- Mon May 19 15:51:49 2003
Well, I wouldn't! mySQL is a fantastic bit of DB and php feels less clunky than ASP. Of course, it's all a matter of taste and I know that if I don't like it, then I can lump it. 34sp is only 15 quid per year...
Rob Lang
- Mon May 19 15:49:54 2003
Yea, I'd much rather work with a set of XML files than have to start messing about with databases.

John
- Mon May 19 14:07:19 2003
It's Fasthosts that have decided their Windows servers only run ASP and MS SQL, and their Linux servers only run PHP and MySQL. When we add a new domain to our package, we have to choose whether we want it to run on a Linux or a Windows server. From then on it is pretty much cast in stone as to whether we're using ASP or PHP on that domain. If anyone has a spare domain name hanging around, I'm sure we could hook it up to a new son our package running on a Linux server. Although I have a feeling we'd still have to pay for the SQL bit. Before you say it, yes I know MySQL is free software, but what Fasthosts charge is a sort of maintenance fee or something.
John
- Mon May 19 14:06:25 2003
Rob, what I meant was, with our package we would have to move to linux to do that. We have no direct control over the servers, so we can't install any new software on them.
John

John: No you don't, php and MySQL install easily on a Windows server. Baldrick did it to his home Win2000 server in about 20 minutes and we've had no problems since. He was surprised on how easy it all was - next to no need for configuration and he's obsessed with internet security.

Rob: Our degrees in the states go something like this: 2 years of study at a university is an associate's degree; 4 years is a bachelor's. Those are called 'undergrad' work. 2 years after a bachelor's is a master's (this is what I'm going for currently). 2-5 years after that (depending upon major) is a doctorate. Master's and Doctoral degrees are considered 'graduate' work. Hope this clears it up :) Oh, I'll have a Masters of Art in Philosphy and I'll hopefully be able to get my PhD after that.

Been very absent. Don't know if you noticed as I'm an American. Been very busy. Was accepted to grad school to pursue a masters (and more hopefully) in Philosophy. Nice.

Many a time have I heard Berkshire called "The Scotland of the South-East".

Lewes, yup. But they've sort of kicked him out! Madness.

Nice bloke that Sam. Am I right in thinking he's from Lewis?

Went to the Fez last night for the first time in 4 weeks and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Sam (of drunken Scotsman fame) was quite blotto and started singing "flower of Scotland" at one late point. Smashing night.

Tom - I sent a message to the SMS gateway yesterday afternoon, but it doesn't seem to have arrived. Is it still running?

I was having trouble with the DHCP on my ADSL router but I just upgraded the firmware and now it seems to be working properly. I am deeply concerned by how much I have enjoyed the whole process.

Probably my favourite jape of Tim's (and possibly Simon's) is when I wandered into the lounge to find him sawing the chair in half (because the kernel took too long to compile). However, this isn't the one I remembered this morning and have since forgot. It is still bugging me.
John
- Fri May 9 15:06:13 2003
I remember Tim once walking up to Computer Science in his long coat with shades on. It was a grey and grotty day, so I asked why he was wearing sun glasses, even though the sun wasn't out. He replied in a thrice "When you look this cool, the sun is always shining!". How I chuckled.

That's really annoying. On the way into work this morning I was reminded of something funny Tim once said, and was happily laughing to myself. Now I can't remember what it was, and it's really bugging me. Any chance you could list all of the humourous comments you've ever made Tim, so I could look it up? Thanks.

Randomly, I'm reminded of the time I barged into Rich's room at St. Georges yelling "Faces against the wall, bastards!" to then meet his mum and sister. Oh how we laughed.

I don't mind the booting so much... I think I might end up having a PC that's on all the time anyway...
John

The slow bit is the booting! You could install LinuxBIOS and have it boot in about 3 seconds...

Ten weeks of road works have started on a very busy junction stretch of motorway between me and work which will mean mega delays both directions on my travels to and from work. So, as an experiment, I am going to begin commuting via train.

The ADSL modem/router thing I got has a built-in hub, so there's four ethernet ports. One for me, one for Chie, one for a server, and one for "guests". Or something like that. Excuse me, I seem to be having a nerdy overload at the moment. I assure you it will pass.
John

I run Win2k server to do NAT so my laptop can have Internet downstairs. For added ooo value, I'm shortly going to be investigating Wireless LAN.

I have a sort of workstationy thing now. Chie has a nice Japanese laptop, and my old laptop is still hanging around somewhere, but isn't really much use any more. It might be nice to get a cheap old desktop to run linux and do servery type things. Although I can't think of any real need for it at the moment.

I should be getting my ADSL router today - apparently my connection was activated yesterday. This will probably result in an inordinate quantity of crap being uploaded to the 'Maison over the next few weeks. Hoorah!

I used Ulead DVD Movie Factory for the dvd stuff - sadly menu authoring hasn't really been cracked by the linux guys, so i've been using Windows. I'd have a go myself but you have to pay big dollars for the DVD format specs.

I don't think Freevo will work with my card. DVB cards are totally different to analogue TV cards. Freevo would need to incoporate the driver from linuxtv.org, and it means recompiling your kernel, sawing chairs in half, etc. Having said that, there's a bit on the linuxtv site that says their driver is going to be incoporated into the kernel at some point or something...
John

I am going on exercise this weekend... you should see the size of my bergen! (ooh err Mrs!) I've got four side pouches attached - yes Rob, FOUR - and a full set of webbing too. Damn the British weather - if it wasn't going to be so horrible, I wouldn't need the half of it. I'll post you a picture later on..
