Hi Lox: Even some legitimate services have odd filenames in TaskManager. A good way to check (if mind-numbingly slow!) is to choose a filename you're not familiar with, do a File-Search on it to find out where it lives, then right-click the file, choose properties and check version details. If it's legitimate it should give Maker and version name. If a virus masquerading as legit, it won't... (usually :/ ) Any file beginning "win*.*" is a good target...

Ciao Tim, actually it could have been a better month ... :) I have seen the doc today, I will have to have surgery, probably in September.. Let' see July what will bring, but all in all it could have been a lot worse, I am actually taking this whole injury stuff in good way, all things considered!

Ciao John, actually I have tried that first. I have a ps2 keyboard and it gave the same problem so it has to be something to do with software. It might be Firefox because other applications don't give me any problems, maybe Java/Firefox combination... I am still researching, though it might also be overheating... Or a virus, I am in Florence now and the av is in Varese so it'll have to wait...
Lox
- Thu Jun 30 10:42:21 2005

It may not help Lox, but yesterday my Dad's computer started going all weird on us, a while after booting up it would sort of freeze - it stopped accepting input from the mouse or keyboard. We went through the whole rigmarole of checking for viruses, trojans, spyware etc - updated his virus checker, went through windows update to get all the latest patches and so on, and so on.... In the end it turned out to be a straightforward broken keyboard.
So the moral of the story is, if it is easy to do, try using another keyboard. Do any of your friends have a USB keyboard perhaps? Laptops generally accept these without much fuss.
John
- Thu Jun 30 07:40:21 2005

Ciao Nigel, I don't keep an av running to be honest, it's an old laptop and it would cripple it. The only time I have installed an AV I was STORMED by virses, so I decided to avoit it.. I rarely connect just to check mail and see this site so I feel there is little need. I do have an anti spyware active all tme (actually the MicroSoft one).. This afternoon it was working fine, the behaviour is too erratic to be a virus, I think it might be either windows or some component overheating...

Trouble was we were in Sheffield, me on one side of a road, friend on another. "Hey, Nigbo!" said friend shouted, to attract my attention. Only ten did we notice a predominantly black population. Oh that and "Do you know where you're going?", which actually turned out to mean "Do you know where your hotel is?" rather than the initial "What are you aiming for in life?" that I interpreted it as, to my embarassment... They generously stopped me in my tracks just a few words into my long speech about what I want to achieve, etc.

Yes I have had two interviews already, both in Tokyo. Not sure how many it will run to in total - one of the coordinators there said in extreme cases it can be as many as six! My guess is there'll be four in total - if I pass the one in Seattle there'll be a final one back in Tokyo. It is becoming a very long drawn out process...
When I say emptying the bins - I of course mean that somewhat metaphorically, but it is the lowliest of all the positions they had on offer in the new team, and I really don't see why high up management need to be involved in the decision of whether I get the job or not.

(part 2) It does matter. I could be teaching at a small university with a master's degree while I took classes toward a 2nd master's. That would be a huge help financially but it's not a big deal to my program so it's not to be. I hate my current job. Really sorry to hear you've had such a shitty time of it Rob. I can understand that feeling of just wanting it to all be over and done with, and it must be soul destroying to have it all dragged out for another year like that, when it is completely beyond your control... Although it may not be much consolation, graduation is just the ceremony - I think you can get some kind of certificate before that as soon as the final approval comes in from your examiners. So I don't think you have to wait for a graduation ceremony to officially have the qualification... Perhaps you could just say bollocks to graduation and organise your own party instead...?
John
- Mon Jun 27 17:23:59 2005

Rob I am really sorry to read about this problem, it dangerously resembles what we have here in Italy both for postgrad and undergrad thesis. It usually takes 2 years to get it done, and almost 1 to get it approved.. I have never experienced such delays, but I can understand that it must be rather frustrating, especially as you have done your job on time, and as they requested. Does the officialization of the PhD stops something at work (like promotion or stuff like that)? Maybe you can push them saying that you'll miss out on something.. Mmm maybe it's a far shot that one...

Because of those fuckers at University, my corrections will not be signed off for another few months. Because they have not looked at them yet. Both internal fucking and external fucking examiner have not bothered to look at the bloody corrections I slaved over for a year on the train to and from work.

Because mum and dad are holidaying in New Zealand this December, I can't grad then either. So I have to wait a year. I finished this fucking thesis in February.

I have been fucked over by those cunts who call themselves professionals and I have to wait more months to find out whether the corrections are valid or not.

The thumbnails are perfect - unless there are any issues at your end I would have thought there is no harm in making the full size images a bit larger - 640 x 480 or even (gasp) 800 x 600 perhaps?
John
- Sat Jun 25 23:00:09 2005

Do you think the thumbnails and subsequent linked images are big enough? The thumnails are frame 120x120 and the bigger ones are 480x480.

True John! It's really odd how fast the tolerance to us "foreigners" can change. In Wrexham where I work, they don't bat an eyelid, but five miles down the road (west) they do the old stop-talking lark if you dare to walk in to their local.

I know what you mean about the pub Nigel. As much as I love North Wales it is a bit isolated. I'd love to be in the pub right now, but unfortunately the nearest one is something silly like a six mile walk - even Roger Bannister might struggle to make it there for last orders now. Besides, I always feel whenever I go to a pub round here that all the locals are muttering in Welsh behind your back about how much they hate the "colonists", etc.

In my viva my examiner got out what is basically the revised version of Bird and Wadler (just Bird now), referred to something I'd put in my thesis which could have been misconstrued as an original contribution, and said, ahem, hasn't this been done before? Old habits die hard, eh?

John
- Sat Jun 25 19:07:16 2005

John: I already have the domain name lined up for the mobile bit, and yes, a wildcard should be no problem. Nigel: The dspBot shinks the images for you! The idea was for it make posting images (to any website) as easy as possible. So even your mum can do it! (tm)

Evening all! I happen to be a bit "merry" on account of a tortuous visit to Shrewsbury with screaming kids (dsp: this has yet to come!) So once back I cracked a can straight away - for sanity's sake! Now then, I'm useless with HTML but I recognise a good idea when I see one... I'd love the ability to upload the odd picture now and hten, if this is possible. These images have undergone an extra ordinary journey. They have been attached to an email address, and sent to a magic inbox. Then, dspBot has downloaded them, produced a thumbnail and a bigger version, uploaded them to the Maison, generated some HTML and posted it to the message board. The long and short of it is, we will be able to post pictures and other messages to the message board by send an email to the magic address.

Out of interest Lorenzo, were there any choice blasphemies uttered on the day you injured your knee? I would have though it at least would have merited a porca madonna, perhaps even a dio merda....?

Lox: didn't the original doctor say you should be able to walk OK eventually even without surgery...? Knees are funny things aren't they? I walked into a post outside my old company some time in March - it couldn't have been more than 3mph, but it was really painful... Still get the odd twinge from it now and again. However, it hasn't made any significant impact on my active, sporty lifestyle (yeah, right).

Thanks guys you are truly wonderful... I guess John is right, the op in not essential and basically the GP that I have is saying that it's not worth getting an operation... I will speak to him today. As for the internet campaing I already got the pictures :) Here in Italy the private sector I guess it's pretty good but rather expensive. I will see what info I can get, I guess that I could get the op in England but what happens with rehab then? Oh well, it's the information gathering part now... Thanks a lot everyone for the support and help!

- Tue Jun 21 07:32:05 2005

Really glad to hear things are looking up a bit Lox. Not sure what the situation is in Italy, but here in England nowadays going private is not nearly as crazily expensive as you would think. I think BUPA etc can do one off operations even if you're not a member. In fact, perhaps you could even come to England to have it done...? I guess the Italian doctors saying "it can't be operated on" actually meant "we don't want to operate on it because we don't view it as essential". I'm sure there is a solution out there...
John
- Mon Jun 20 23:31:57 2005

Ciao guys... Fortunately the internet gave me some hope. Found a lot of sites that describe this injusy pretty well and apparently it is possible to get it operated and fixed. Now the real hard part begins as theoretically I am in no need of an operation (I will be able to walk with this injuty) and I am no sport professional. This means that times might get rather long, but I don't want to go withour a fight and I will do as much as I can to get it fixed asap. Italian NHS is crap ad slow, but I fear that a private op might be too expensive for my finances. We'll see tomorrow I will start calling to get appointemts to see some proper doc for these kind of injuries...
Lox
- Mon Jun 20 23:22:21 2005

Really sorry to hear you have all this to go through Lox... Might be a good idea to get a second opinion perhaps? Is the health service state run there? In which case can you go and get someone in the private sector to take a look at it...?

Shit!!! Apparently I have a "subtotal damage of the anterior cruciate ligament"... Called my dos, he said that it's the worst that could happen as nobody is going to put it back in place through surgery, the ligament doesn't grow back and basically I have to be very very careful not to get it broken completely... It might mean the end of physical activity (except swimming pool I guess), but it might mean more... I can't belive my luck... Now I am looking over the internet for more info about this injury, needless to say that this is a rather bad blow... :(

Apparently there was some sort of cancellation right before I called, that's why they gave me the appointment so early!! Oh well, doesn't matter really, the important thing is that I have done it. Will have results on Monday, even though the technitian told me that I can "kiss the cruciate goodbye" to write it in is own words... :(

Lox- sorry to be pedantic, but a Dalek is not a robot. It's more akin to an exoskeleton- there's a living creature inside it. Also- well done on getting the appointment ... you have to get up *very* early in the morning get to prompt treatment from the UK NHS!

Yesterday I must have set a new Italian record for the Italian NHS efficency. I had to book the MRI, if the ligaments are broken I cannot wait too long or they will shrink and it will be very hard to stich them back to the bone. So I called this radiology center, and I have got the appointment for TODAY at 11 !!! Amazing... At first the lady said that the earliest was the 20th of July, but after some bullshitting over the phone I got today at 11.. At least it's a ray of light in the darkness... :)
Lox

Mumsie, Kev and Travis: I SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! Of course I know that robot but I didn't know it had a name! We didn't get Dr.Who in Italy when we were kids, so I guess my memories come from the period in England, where I am positive that I have seen that Robot somewhere... All clear now, can go back to the destroyed knee... :)

[SNIP!] Cleared out the junk - Rob

John: I can hear the phone crackling and singing already... I have dial-up in Italy and tomorrow I will be back to my crappy 56K... Quite a difference from the 42Megabits that my agent has here in Japan (yes you read correctly FOURTYTWO, I have checked the contract that he signed because I couldn't believe it....)

Travis: Well I have to say that I would have much rather studied German (very similar to Latin), at least I would have been taught something more useful. Of course with a degree in philosophy I can see why you study it!
Lox

I don't know how it is elsewhere but in the US if you go to a first tier school, your chances of getting a full time, tenured teaching job are great. If you go to a lesser school, then you have a crap chance. You are more likely to make 30,000 a year at some rubbish university. It's a huge difference considering full professors make almost 100k on average.
Travis
- Wed Jun 8 16:58:52 2005

Lox: You are hardcore! I had only 1 year of Latin in High School. Jimmy: My first MA is Philosophy and my main interest is Ancient Philosophy. I already have had about 2 years of Greek. A Classics MA will mean that I have the philosophy and the language skills to get into a top PhD program...continued in next post

Jimmy
- Wed Jun 8 16:54:26 2005

Travis: I hated Latin, I had to study it for 5 years at my High school back in Italy. The only year that I liked was the last one just because we got into traslating the classics, Catullus, Cicero and Cesar were the ones that I liked best.. Good luck on your exam! AD MAJORA!
Lox

Jimmy: Aye. I'm doing a Master's (will be my 2nd) in Classics. I'm still fairly rubbish at Latin but I'm getting there. We've got 4 poems that we need to be able to translate for this exam. Sextus Propertius, Lucretius, Catullus, and Cicero.
