Ooouuuch! Don't get your Hampton Court!!!! :)
Nigel
Sat Jun 30 16:34:47 2007

We're off to see Hampton Court Palace today. Unfortunately the weather is pretty crappy yet again. It pains me to think that our guests will go back to Japan and tell their friends that everything people say about British weather is in fact true!

Fri Jun 29 15:54:33 2007

Jimmy: WAY TO GO MAN!!! It sounds like a cool project, what part are you taking care of? Just the software or also the running on the roof... :P
Lox
Fri Jun 29 13:36:01 2007

That is indeed the challenge, at which (as mentioned below) I am having some success today. Hooray! And it's Friday too ... what a bonus!
Jimmy
Fri Jun 29 13:30:55 2007

I take it the processing of all that data is a challenge?!
tom
Fri Jun 29 13:17:37 2007

... well, being laser-based, it goes through windows , so you often get the insides of the buildings too (!)
Jimmy
Fri Jun 29 13:15:06 2007

Wow cool! You could use that technology for lots of things. Such as accurate models of the insides of buildings, cars etc.
tom
Fri Jun 29 13:06:38 2007

Hey- I'm having quite some success today. I'm working on this project where we build computer models of the various circuits. There's a guy who drives round the track with a laser-scanner on the roof, and the whole circuit comes back as a 100,000,000-sample point-cloud. It's like taking a 3D photo ... utterly amazing!

Well I'm back in civilisation now (i.e. London). We've dropped off the hire car we've had for the last few days, and by some miracle managed to return it without any damage or anything. Chie's family are going to be here until the weekend - so they'll be doing touristy stuff in and around London for there last few days here. I'm back at work tomorrow, but will be off again on Friday...

All: Thanks for all the kind words.. .It really helps and cheers me up a little :D Fortunately I was not injured in the attack, but it means more paperwork to be done. I would LOVE to stay at home but tonight I really must take some Japanese clients out for dinner, the fact is that I have been cancelling appointments with them for the last two days (guess why) and of course this does not look good at all for my career, but there is really nothing I can do about it... Called a lawyer to sort out a bit of mess, hopefully I will have some info next week on how thing might go in the end... As for the dog he's going to help me there too, so at least a bit of the burden is off my shoulders... I just HOPE that tonight NOTHING MORE happens, because it would be total DISASTER if it does.... MM + Rob: Actually I didn't have any problems with them, apparently someone must have distracted the guardian (usually an old guy) and took the car... Rob, did the garage pay for a new car in the end or they just gave you the "value" of the car at the day that it was stolen? this is my biggest fear, I paid the car 22K last October and I fear that they will give me 10K (maybe) in the end....

Fri Jun 22 09:33:32 2007

Dsp: No, actually I live in my office, so that's a problem that I will not have this time... On the other side the theft happened just before I went to take the car to go and meet some clients, needless to say that I had to cancel everything (and today looks the same) but as you can imagine cancelling on a client that came from the other side of the world is hardly a positive thing... The main problem is now insurance, here in Italy it can take up to 6 months to have the money paid back (some cases even longer) and I do not have the cash now to buy a new vehicle... This reminds me so much of the crappy time I had in Reading, girlfriebd on the brink of breaking up, work is shite and now this! :(

dsp
Thu Jun 21 16:06:09 2007

Yes, in a way, I think carbon-dioxide has been somewhat "picked on". There are many other real pollutants (rather than just simple carbon molecules. Jimmy's complex organic molecules for example) ruining the atmosphere. How about "Global Dimming" caused by airplane emmissions? That one doesn't get much press but is startlingly real.
Nigel
Thu Jun 21 15:39:23 2007

Interestingly enough, the ban on CFCs (which are also very potent greenhouse gases) has to date achieved more to prevent global warming than the Kyoto protocol.
Jimmy
Thu Jun 21 15:26:37 2007

John: Exactly my point. The main issue that I see now is with developed countries that are afraid to slow their growth if diverting money into "green" approaches to producing energy and goods. Sooner or later developing countries will realize the effects of building 2 coal power plants a week, actually some of them are already seeing some side effects like huge yellow clouds hovering over their nations in a stable manner...
Lox
Thu Jun 21 14:26:16 2007

...and yea - I've heard this thing about China building power stations brought up several times and can't help but feel it is just an excuse to stop people bothering to do anything. It's an unfortunate fact that these developing countries are probably going to lag behind by a few years/decades in moving to a greener approach to energy.... but yes, hopefully if the West sets a good example they will eventually follow. I think large scale changes like this are not impossible - once upon a time everyone in big cities used to heat their home with coal fires, but after a few years of really bad pea soupers etc they eventually stopped... and when was the last time you used an aerosol with CFCs in it?
John
Thu Jun 21 14:11:30 2007

Kev: there's a video on YouTube where a guy from Google tackles your point about what exactly it means to get to carbon neutral. Actually there are several initiatives afoot, including pouring a lot of money into renewable energy resources and making data centers more energy efficient, as well as things like the research into pluggable hybrid cars. Offsetting (planting trees etc) is just to deal with the bits in the short term where power usage still exceeds generation of clean energy, but longer term the plan seems to be to not to resort to this at all. I still think the tree planting projects are also valid in their own right though.

tom
Thu Jun 21 11:27:11 2007

Kev: The problem with China and India are undeniable, but on the other side we must start somewhere... Moreover pollution tends to be a localized problem, so if the Chinese government doesn't want to take actions the citizens are going to suffer the most of the bad policy. The real problem is that US is polluting a LOT and they don't seem interested in cutting down consumption, they could do it as the economy is a mature one. Same goes for Europe, I am ashamed of Pizzaland for example, I hate how things are managed here... Every little help I think, and our cities are so "dirty", it's unbelievable...
Lox
Thu Jun 21 11:13:30 2007

Also... I heard on the news this week that "experts" estimate that China is opening at least 2 new Coal fired Power stations EVERY WEEK. I find this unbelievable, also apparently, they have lots of dirty coal available which they use which make it even worse. Sometimes it makes me wonder why we even bother with green issues in this country, since it seems our contributions to Carbon emissions are a ting drop of water in a very large ocean. However, I suppose, we need to lead by example, after we can hardly say "Hey Mr Average Chinese guy, stop polluting so much and make other energy investments" if we don't at least do that ourselves.
Kev
Thu Jun 21 10:36:33 2007

I think the phrase "Carbon Neutral", though a laudable achievement, is a bit misleading. After all if I have 200,000 computers all driven by dirty-power i.e burning fossil fuels and nuclear reactions, I can't see how planting a few trees = making up for it just because the "carbon emissions" are balanced. What about the air pollution and environmental pollution caused by the energy creation? A small worthwhile step it might be ( and maybe more companies should follow this model) but David Bellamy it does not make you ( although I believe even he is a nimby when it comes to wind farms!!! )
Kev
Thu Jun 21 10:30:34 2007

John: I see.... Carbon neutral is a good thing, I wish that the rest of the US decided to take steps towards it.... :(
Lox
Thu Jun 21 10:03:46 2007

Lox: I think it's just an awareness raising thing at the moment. Oh and Google have also announced today it will be carbon neutral by the end of this year. I believe Rob made some criticism a while back about the amount of power the company used etc, so it is with a certain degree of smugness that I present this fact. :)

Lox
Thu Jun 21 00:06:41 2007

On a completely unrelated note, Google have started making cars. Well, not quite - they're actually modifying hybrids to make them plug-innable, so they can have their batteries charged by solar power (or regular mains electricity if you so desire). I think I heard somewhere that they can go about 40 miles on the battery alone, which would probably cover most people's daily commute, and then the battery can charge happily away in the office car park while the driver is at work.

Yes thanks Nigel! Went back to work today, did a "standard" 12 hour day. I felt a bit wobbly in the morning, but was more or less completely fine by the afternoon.

Apple Computer announced today that it has developed a computer chip that can store and play music in women's breast implants. The iTit will cost $499 or $599 depending on size. This is considered to be a major breakthrough because women are always complaining about men staring at their breasts and not listening to them.

John: Sounds nasty, I am sure that Chie has some Japanese magic medicine that she can dish out for these occasions... or not?
Lox
Tue Jun 19 12:33:21 2007

Lox: I think it is basically a cold, which seems to involve some stomach complications. I think I'm better than I was yesterday though, so will probably be back at work tomorrow.
John
Tue Jun 19 11:56:14 2007

Well in fairness I believe I did sort of get the idea originally after reading Dilbert, so I think I might give my legal team a rest on this occasion.

Morning.... today I have nothingat all to do, will probably end up doing some grocery shopping...
Lox
Tue Jun 19 07:53:28 2007

Sorry to hear it, John. Don't fret over the lack of TV - it's not much better than InternetTV... (In my opinion) I'd recommend a Sherlock DVD to help you escape reality... Personally I'd probably plop in a Brother Cadfael which gives me a film-length respite.
Nigel
Mon Jun 18 20:44:58 2007

Chie and I have been off work today, as we've both come down with some sort of cold / stomach bug. At times like this I regret not owning a TV - I really need some form of entertainment that requires absolutely no brainpower or effort. Internet based "TV" still appears to be a complete load of crap. I am so bored now!
John
Mon Jun 18 20:29:22 2007

Dsp: No worries at all, I was trying to find out the meaning but I guess that John got it right... :D

OK Nigel, sorry, misread your message. I should have realised that you are much too polite a person to suggest we have "problems"
Mad Mumsie
Sun Jun 17 23:03:35 2007

Personally I think A4 would be a little cold and impersonal - A5 is an altogether cosier and more affectionate size of paper. If you really want to go the whole hog, then maybe even consider coloured paper. Although she may then suspect you of having had an affair, and attempting to cover up for your guilt with lavish gifts.
John

Nigel
Sun Jun 17 20:29:11 2007

Why didn't you borrow one from the neighbour and not return it, thereby prompting a "good life" stylem misunderstanding. Truely English!
tom
Sun Jun 17 19:50:09 2007

So afternoon, then!! Everyone else as busy as I was? One of the advantages to living in a flat (I remember!) was not having to mow lawns. And as my mower had conked out, I had to buy a new one... :( Hey-ho...

Sun Jun 17 16:53:28 2007

Morning all!!! :)
Welcome back MM!!
I actually meant "Women Problems" ... ah-hem... ! (Still on dodgy ground I know!)

Mad Mumsie
Sun Jun 17 10:27:46 2007

Dsp: A4 and Dictionary?! I am afraid the very late night and the relatively early morning call are getting me to miss the suggestion... Is it to write the thesis? Morning everyone bytheway!
Lox
Sun Jun 17 10:09:44 2007

Lox: you need to show her you care. Buy her a pad of A4 and a dictionary. That should escalate things nicely to the point you don't need to do anything else.
dsp
Sun Jun 17 09:10:56 2007

Undoubtedly!! "Women Problems" are but a thing of the past! (I whispered that last bit... just in case... Ah-hem!)
Nigel
Sat Jun 16 23:45:47 2007

Sounds plausible to me Nigel! Well, following our Herculean exertions this evening I feel confident we have fixed all of Lox's problems. I am convinced we will see a message from him tomorrow morning telling us how great life is, and how lucky he feels to be on this fabulous planet of ours.
John
Sat Jun 16 23:39:10 2007

Well John, I have to report that my own efforts on Lox's behalf have met with great success!!! I am slightly "wobbly" which means that any help I might offer makes perfect sense (just now!!) Whether this most obvious sense will remain in the morning is another matter... As to how this long-distance support can possibly help, we should remind doubters that space is proven to be curved by a large mass. We merely substitute a "large mass - of beer" and the physics makes perfect sense, bringing Itally to within shoulder-patting, commiseration distance... :)
Nigel
Sat Jun 16 23:33:24 2007

So Nigel.... how is the beerathon in support of Lorenzo going? I'm just about to move onto beer number three, although I have to admit to slightly losing clarity on how me drinking in another country is helping to fix Lox's girlfriend troubles. Perhaps it'll all make sense after another beer!
John
Sat Jun 16 20:41:21 2007

Good man! You're welcome!! :)
Nigel
Sat Jun 16 18:58:56 2007

Nigel: it is too dangerous for you to undertake this heroic effort all alone. I feel I should assist...
John
Sat Jun 16 15:10:14 2007

Nigel: EHEHEHEH :D
John: Well I am off to Pisa this afternoon for some fireworks display with some friends. I think that it will help me taking my head away from the problems that I have now, although I feel very disappointed at the way things are going with Chiara and my relationships in general...
Lox
Sat Jun 16 15:05:45 2007

Hi guys... I feel I ought to commiserate by going out and buying a large volume of BEER, bringing it back and then trying to drown *your* sorrows, remotely, so to speak!!! ;))
Nigel
Sat Jun 16 14:49:42 2007

Sounds generally pretty crappy Lorenzo. Oh well, I'm sure you'll sort it out one way or the other. In the meantime try not to let it get you down too much! Presumably you'll have some free time to yourself this weekend? Anything fun planned?
John
Sat Jun 16 14:06:29 2007

John: Thanks John!! :D Well this is exactly my point, the problem is that when we discuss about it she denies it all!! Unfortunately because of her job she works 12 hours 7 days a week. I told her that several phone calls and coming to sleep at my place, although good things, are hardly a way to get to know each other in a deeper way, a way that I see could eventually move us forward into going to live together and so on. She has a different approach, she likes me so we must do things on the flow of the moment, romance and feelings... So she doesn't see any problem to have kids, to move together (only if we marry though) and so on... There are many more things to tell, (like she needs to write her thesis but she is leaving for a week to Morocco with her girlfriends next week... then if I ask to come out with my friends she starts offending me because she must write the paper and I clearly do not care about it...), but the bottom line is that I am getting quite bored by all of it. She doesn't seem to understand what I have asked her (take more time off work as a normal person so that we can start spending some quality time together), so I think that there is only one solution to all the problem...
Lox
Sat Jun 16 12:20:49 2007

I recommend getting tremendously drunk, starting around lunchtime today. Alas, if I wasn't incapable of being spontaneous any more on account of being married, I would be jumping on a plane to come down and join you.
John
Sat Jun 16 11:58:18 2007

Well Lox, things don't sound that great. I feel like you've been quite unfortunate yet again - having met someone new, you ought to be able to qualify for a bit more than 3 months before the inevitable bickering and unreasonable demands start. How do you think you will proceed from here? Are you planning to weather the storm? Or...?
John
Sat Jun 16 11:55:02 2007

Dsp: Hard to say... Moving together, getting to spend more time together, a certain clash of personalities and views that it's quite hard (in my view). Also she seems to think that romance must dictate our actions, while I am a bit more pragmatical (after 3 month that we see each other talking about kids and marriage seems to me a BIT quick)...

Yea, still pretty dry here too, although I do hear it will be wet tomorrow. I left work at 6 o' clock today - imagine that! I got in at 10 as well, so I actually did an 8 hour day for once!

Fri Jun 15 13:00:59 2007

John
Fri Jun 15 11:11:47 2007

Nigel
Thu Jun 14 20:42:00 2007

Well, judging by the fact I'm still in the office, it looks like I've taken option D then. Still, it's not all bad - I've got some jazz playing, and plenty of free food and drink on hand!
John
Thu Jun 14 20:13:27 2007

Well, Chie's off to the ballet tonight. So that ought to mean a carte blanche for a beery night out, unfortunately I don't know anyone to go drinking with. So I suppose my options are (A) go out by myself anyway (B) drink at home (C) go home but not drink (D) just stay at work longer instead. None of these are that enticing!

As for the Robots thing John... I'm reminded of Marvin The Paranoid Android... I have a single of his called "Reasons To Be Miserable..." (True!)

Thu Jun 14 14:24:34 2007

I still have "The Humans are Dead" stuck in my head.
John
Thu Jun 14 14:12:27 2007

Well I think every society has it's troubles with irritating and unruly young people. In Japan I they have a social group who I believe are referred to as "chinpera" - a sort of trainee low-grade yakuza. Although they're not as visually offensive as our chavs, I believe they are responsible for a fair amount of misdemeanours (at least by Japanese standards, where crime rates are lower to start with)
John
Thu Jun 14 13:31:07 2007

... probably all a bit politically incorrect. My personal view is that Eskimos are lovely people with not one trace of chavness about them. I'm sure they would never consider wearing white-nylon "trackies" tucked into their socks...
Nigel
Thu Jun 14 12:26:30 2007

... and my favourite: What do you call a Chav in a box? "Innit". What do you call an Eskimo Chav in a box? "Innuinnit". :D
Nigel
Thu Jun 14 11:57:42 2007

I think I'm getting Trench-foot... :(
I seem to have received an email with a lot of Chav jokes... eg - Why are Chavs like slinkies? They have no real use but it's great to watch one fall down a flight of stairs.

Thu Jun 14 10:17:25 2007

Nigel
Thu Jun 14 10:08:17 2007

Sorry to hear your plight, Nigel. I recommend a cagool or waterproof outfit for your morning sortie to the office.
Rob Lang
Thu Jun 14 09:52:42 2007

John: yes, it is! Sadly taking my shoes off doesn't count as "professional" as I'm up and about all the time :( . Presumably making squelching-noises does! First break at 10:15 so I get a chance then.
I remember getting so wet last winter I actually went out and bought new shoes just for some relief; and I quite agree - wet feet is pretty dire. Anything else is bearable...
Nigel
Thu Jun 14 09:50:29 2007

Thu Jun 14 08:46:33 2007

Morning Maisoneers... Talk about wet! Torrential here. I'm as wet as a wet thing in a very wet place. Does my employer give a hoot? Do they "heckerslike!" So I sit here in wet feet, wet trousers and am expected to be professional... Pah!

Glad you fellows liked it. I've seen a fair bit of their stuff. They had a special on HBO (I think you all know what that is) about a year ago. Now they have a series coming to HBO as well. I'm quite envious of you, John, for having seen them live. I don't think they will be performing anywhere near me any time soon. "Most Beautiful Girl in the Room" is a classic.

I've got it stuck in my head now:

The Humans are Dead.
We killed them. They're Dead.
The Humans are Dead.
Check that one - yes he's Dead.
We used poisonous gases...
...we poisoned their asses.
(well actually their lungs)

genius!

I liked the one where they introduced themselves as "formerly the 4th best parody folk duo in NZ - unfortunately we're no longer number 4, another band has come along and shuffled us down the rankings - they're called like of the conchords, they're a tribute band to us in fact, but a bit more popular than we are".

Hmmm. Tricky. However Lox, I must give your girlfriend 10-out-of-10 for organisational/planning skills!
At the end of the day though, BOTH of you have to be happy with any arrangements made, otherwise there will always be a bad feeling which comes back to haunt you in the future. As for moving flat again - I agree that would be a great upheaval, and one you're only just recovering from the first time!
Nigel
Wed Jun 13 09:51:39 2007

Nigel: It's all complicated, after three months of seeing each other Chiara wants to have a "PROJECT" (I am getting to hate this word), and wants us to move to a flat together. But my flat is not good enough (and if she moves here she refuses to share the rent on the account that I already claim it from taxes, so it's ok to share bills but rent will still be on me) so she wants me to make another move to a different place (incidentally the one above her parents house)... I told her that after 3 months it seems a bit "early" to start talking about moving together, and frankly speaking I have only just settled here and getting to move everything again doesn't sound appealing at all (not to speak about the money that is wasted in the process). I let you imagine the reaction to this discussion....

Yes Travis I'm definitely a fan! Saw them at Glastonbury a few years back - I really loved their song "only for robots" which has a solo in it all done ib binary. Tom: we use a variant of ubuntu at work... but I'm still very much an amateur when it comes to Linux, so I wouldn't really know the difference between that and all the other major distributions. I am however getting quite nifty with bash, are you all aware of he joys of Ctrl+R? ... and I secretly really enjoying chaining about five commands together with the pipe operator, especially if one of them is something involving a "while". Tue Jun 12 14:12:41 2007

Yes actually I use Firefox on the Mac, mainly just because I like the consistency (my main machine at work runs Linux). I've never really used Safari a great deal, but it is interesting to hear it is now available on Windows. I'm not really sure what sort of a market it will attract though - the IE refuseniks will presumably continue on with Firefox, and people who really like Apple stuff probably already have a Mac anyway.
John
Tue Jun 12 13:33:12 2007

Jimmy: Watch the swinging watch... You need an Apple Mac... When you awake you will forget this conversation but go out and immediately buy a Mac....
(More seriously, I didn't know about a Windows version of Safari, but so far have no issues with Safari on the Mac. Though I believe some people prefer Firefox, I'm quite happy.)

Lorenzo g1 g2 John g1 g2 g1 where g1 = Genghis

Sun Jun 10 23:10:11 2007

Yes, as much as I like England, it continues to amaze me how many foreign tourists we have, considering how expensive it is here, and how generally appalling the standard of customer service is. I feel like I want to shake the hand of every tourist I meet, and thank them warmly for having persevered through it all.
John
Sun Jun 10 22:17:00 2007

It's really annoying how people seem to be able to scoff at tourists, isn't it? Treat them like dirt, whereas in actual fact we should treat them like long-lost friends for coming here and spending their money! I remember a bus-driver like that on Jersey. He kind of tutted in a rude fashion and then proceded to correct my pronunciation of some place-name or other. I remember taking it in the chin, in a good-sport way and laughing it off. It wasn't until later I realised how rude he was being. Sure let me know the right way to say it, but don't belittle me!
Nigel
Sun Jun 10 21:36:53 2007

Oh and the guy who drove the shuttle bus between the nearest station and the castle was an obnoxious old git. It really annoyed me that all those foreign tourists on that bus will probably go back home with a lingering impression of England based on that foul old codger. No wonder we always get nil points at Eurovision!
John
Sun Jun 10 21:09:05 2007

...but then, exactly that "oh well it was OK so mustn't grumble" attitude which I have just conveyed is what will perpetuate Britain being a rip-off country.
John
Sun Jun 10 21:05:12 2007

Having said all of that though, I did actually have quite a nice day out, despite it being overpriced...
John
Sun Jun 10 21:03:44 2007

It seems a bit of a vicious circle to me - I'm sure the people who run the place would say they need to charge a high entrance fee because a place like that costs so much to maintain. However, presumably lowering the price might also persuade more people to visit. Furthermore, if these crumbling old piles really are so expensive to maintain, so much so that they become prohibitively expensive to visit, then one has to wonder if it is really worth saving them at all. Besides all of that, I noticed in almost every room they made a point of mentioning what a wonderful venue the castle is for conferences and weddings - it sounds like a thriving commercial enterprise to me. I believe the whole thing is privately owned, not the usual National Trust / English Heritage. If the admission was half the price it actually was, I'd be saying good on them, but at 14 quid I can't help but think they're milking it a bit. Especially given that almost all the visitors seemed to be foreign tourists, who, from Hollywood etc, have an idealised image of England which this castle fits rather well.
John
Sun Jun 10 21:02:31 2007

Nah! I doubt it John! :)
There's fair; and there's rip-off. I am happy to pay over the odds for something I know I'm really going to like, or because I've always wanted to... whatever. But just on the off-chance something might be enjoyable, paying through the nose is just plain rude of the provider!
Nigel
Sun Jun 10 20:52:55 2007

I am starting to worry I am turning into one of those mean old men, who can't enjoy anything at all, and simply complains about how much it costs instead.
John
Sun Jun 10 19:38:43 2007

Nigel
Sun Jun 10 19:18:09 2007

On the way back into London now. Yes Nigel Leeds castle is that photogenic one with the moat. It made for a nice enough day out I suppose, but is a bit overpriced for what it was - 14 quid each!
John
Sun Jun 10 18:19:26 2007

Well, it's Sunday evening now... The day prior to me returning to work (Booo!!!!) So I'm just enjoying a nice and civilised Gin and Tonic (or two) - I assume the rest of the working week will be appalling, so I need to have a... "pied-a-terre" in sanity and civilisation. This week has made me realise just how much I truly hate my present employment. However, as you may recall, I had the opportunity of an interview a couple of weeks back. Sadly, on arrival the job had changed from Permanent to Temporary. How cr&* is that!? So, as I say, a G&T is required...

Sat Jun 9 22:41:20 2007

Kev - what are you talking about? Dumbing down like this is absolutely great for us - it means when this generation of ill-informed young whipper-snappers get out into the workplace, they're not going to present any competition at all to those of us who were lucky enough to have a reasonable education. This guarantees us all job security well into our 80s. :)
John
Sat Jun 9 22:39:51 2007

Kev: Yes, that is SO bad! As you all may recall my intention was to DO Physics - Teaching to be precise. In those days it was a REAL subject. Then I was told I'd have no chance of making a living so I headed off and did other things (much to my chagrin it now turns out...). People often scoff at this type of dumbing-down, as if we're being snobbish or stupid for daring to notice. But the truth is out there...
Nigel
Sat Jun 9 17:24:59 2007

Surfing the internet I just stumbled across this article about the state and quality of the physics taught in British schools. We've got Monster Munch in the kitchens here at work! Pickled onion flavour, mind, as opposed to the roast beef ones I always used to prefer... but still, delightfully nostalgic.

Happy Friday indeed. In two hours I'm off for a week's holiday in Scotland - my annual trip. Hope the weather is going to be OK.

As I recall you had a large back garden - perhaps you could construct a kind of shanty town of assorted greenhouses, sheds and lean-tos to house all your offspring?
John
Thu Jun 7 22:05:50 2007

Tom: any plans to move house (or have you done so already without me noticing?) - what with baby number 8 (or however many it is now) on the way, isn't it going to be a bit of a squeeze?
John
Thu Jun 7 22:03:17 2007

I left the MacBook at work today, and on arrival at home I decided I wanted to do a bit of interweb etc... I turned on my old Windows laptop, and it is quite a painful experience to do anything with it now - so much so I have resorted to VNCing into my Mac Mini instead!
John
Thu Jun 7 22:02:18 2007

Just got back from the whisky society - Nigel I think the Scots' "cheers" is slainte perhaps? ...but I've never heard anyone seriously using that at the club.
John
Thu Jun 7 22:00:42 2007

Got much to do? Mine's a pain...
Nigel
Thu Jun 7 20:40:20 2007

Just mown the 'lawn'.

I'm off to the whisky society this evening. :)
John

John
Thu Jun 7 17:46:16 2007

Evening chaps! Busy afternoon in the garden, and sorting the (in)famous garage! I'm getting a bit ruthless now and chucking out loads of stuff. If I knew if anybody needed something (reasonable!) I'd check before throwing etc... Otherwise, it's probably time for some Gui... Well, you know! :)
Nigel

John: Thanks for the nomination, the first point that I would like to address is vegetarian food. As you all know it is the real reason behind spam, so I propose to ban it alltogether from the world. Secondly I hereby nominate google best software engineer to deal with the problem of Spam and la Maison, John Alastair Hawkins, as it is clearly also the big G fault. Ok now you can pay me a fantastillion euro for my hard work. Thanks.

Yes Lox, I nominate you to readdress our spam system.

Mwuhahahaha!!!! An evil plan is hatched...!!!! :D At least Mini-ITX takes up so little room! Very tempting...! (By the way, is the sun over the yard-arm yet?)

Wed Jun 6 16:51:37 2007

nigel, you need to check mini-itx.com or itx-warehouse.co.uk. you can pick up some cool hardware to run 24/7 servers. Not powerful but you can run linux + apache webservers and general mess abouth them and they are virtually silent so the other half wont even know it exists!!!
Kev
Wed Jun 6 16:44:38 2007

Great ideas, guys! :D I *did* contemplate a 24/7/365 server, but realise I don't actually have an industrial quality power supply (don't want to burn down the garage :~ ) As for lawn-mowing. Oh, that would be soooo good. Sadly my garden will defeat anything other than man-controlled. It's a nightmare! (Actually I would have thought a bit of LOGO programming and a few servos might have been a cheaper option than a BigTrak!! Neat toy though! :D
Nigel
Wed Jun 6 16:23:27 2007

I have a much better idea that takes the lawn mower concept much farther.

You should look on Ebay and place a bid for a bigtrak somehow connect it your petrol lawnmower using the bits left over in your garage. All you have to do then is sit back and drink Guinness and admire you freshly cut lawn while your new robotic friend does all the hard work.
Kev
Wed Jun 6 16:04:05 2007

...or how about putting it into a novelty case, like an old lawn mower...?
John
Wed Jun 6 13:13:44 2007

Nigel: you should make your own data centre / server farm in your garage with all these frankenstein machines, and offer web hosting / bulk data processing.
John
Wed Jun 6 13:10:07 2007

Oh, and that WASN'T an advert by the way, just my excitement at getting the PC running so well!! :)

Nigel
Wed Jun 6 10:58:53 2007

Just in my garage... Browsing the internet on a home-built PC. Get this: 450mhz CPU, 194MB RAM, Windows ME on a 10GB HD and a cheapo USB WiFi stick. Runs like a rocket for web use and wordpro. Seriously faster than XP or Vista on a hyper PC. I know it's got severe limitations but it's running fine! (Selling it on Ebay :)))
Nigel
Wed Jun 6 10:57:41 2007

Hmmm... give it a couple of years maybe, doesn't really appeal much right now.

Yea I never really got the point of MySpace either Nigel - just a big mess, very low on any real content.
John
Tue Jun 5 23:31:00 2007

Just been surfing around "MySpace"... Seems like a lot of fakery and dodginess going on there. On one hand I can see the notion of MySpace is a good idea, but on the other, pointless as it's been completely ruined already...
Nigel
Tue Jun 5 23:17:02 2007

True Kev! I like to celebrate any time off I get with a nightly tipple! And Mr Guinness is such a sociable chap! :)
Nigel
Tue Jun 5 17:29:01 2007

Nigel: You and Mr Guinness seem to be rather good friends these days? I think I might say hello to him myself this evening :)
Kev
Tue Jun 5 17:24:58 2007

Hi all (Hi Tom too! How's the new job going?) :)
I rather like this "not-being-at-work-lark"! Today took the kids to school, popped to the PO, did a bit of "scripting" (learning Filemaker actually) and just cracked a Guinness! Rather good, as I say!
As for Spamalot - this makes me all nostalgic for Monty Python and Spam (of the tinned-meat variety!) Fritters to be precise. Awfully unhealthy but still...
Nigel
Tue Jun 5 17:16:48 2007

Hi guys.
tom
Tue Jun 5 16:47:16 2007

OOhhhhhh .... *that's* who I can blame!
Jimmy
Tue Jun 5 16:22:02 2007

Yea I quite enjoyed Avenue Q - in some places it wasn't really my sort of humour, but in other bits I did find it pretty funny. I really enjoyed the "bad idea bears" (presumably a rip-off of the care bears?) who pop up every now and again and persuade the main characters to drink heavily.
John
Tue Jun 5 16:13:05 2007

Was Avenue Q any good? I found an animated version of "The internet is for porn" which is apparently from that show. Which made me chuckle rather a lot.
Jimmy
Tue Jun 5 15:53:25 2007

... and there were several good piss-takes of Les Miserables (which had previously played for years & years & years at the Palace).
Jimmy
Tue Jun 5 15:50:47 2007

Yeah, well, my feeling is that you just have to take thing at face value. It was never going to be played by the original Pythons, so you can't expect the performances to be identical. And if they tried to emulate the original then it would be (as you wrote) money for old rope. For me, it was really fun to see an fresh, alternative presentation of something that's exceedingly familiar. I liked the way it had been made more musical, and the addition of the animation was really very Python-esque in my opinion.
Jimmy
Tue Jun 5 15:47:27 2007

Anyway Jimmy, if you did want to read my thoughts on Spamalot, you can find them here.
John
Tue Jun 5 14:56:10 2007

Ironically (but perhaps predictably) when you search for Spamalot, you get a lot of Spam. I was rather hoping my review might show up somewhere or other, but it seems not.
John
Tue Jun 5 14:52:29 2007

Jimmy - regarding your post yesterday (or whenever it was) - I too went to see Spamalot recently, did you read my review (if you can call it that). I actually left feeling a bit disappointed, but maybe that's just me...
John
Tue Jun 5 14:50:51 2007

John: No need, my French stretches as much as to understand that CRAP joke :D
Lox
Tue Jun 5 11:52:20 2007

(Lox, if you didn't get my earlier gag, allow me to translate the name of this popular vegetable into Italian for you: mangi tutti)
John
Tue Jun 5 11:27:25 2007

After some experimentation, I've determined the Smeatharpe offset is about two teeth, so this issue can be resolve by aiming your toothpick/finger about two teeth away from where your tongue suggests. However, I'm not yet clear whether it consistently offsets to the left or to the right. Of course, if you have a different tongue/teeth installed to the ones I'm using, your mileage may vary.
John
Tue Jun 5 11:25:38 2007

...in a delightful fit of irony I only ate half the packet.
John
Tue Jun 5 11:22:55 2007

Actually I did buy some mangetout last night for the first time in ages!
John
Tue Jun 5 11:22:33 2007

John: You forgot frozen value burghers in that list... As for yours, apart from the mandatory quorn (the little furry animal that is fed live squirrels bleeding but not quite dead yet), and the usual mangetout, did you move onto something else?
Lox
Tue Jun 5 11:17:13 2007

(In both cases, completely correct though...!)
Nigel
Tue Jun 5 11:05:10 2007

:D What are you two like!?!?
Nigel
Tue Jun 5 10:57:57 2007

Have you noticed when embarking on such a probing expedition that your mouth is apparently upside down.
Kev
Tue Jun 5 10:54:48 2007

I have a new Meaning of Liff entry: Smeatharpe - an item of food lodged in your teeth, which your tongue suggests is in one place, but cannot be found upon probing with a toothpick or finger.
John
Tue Jun 5 10:46:08 2007

I think I can imagine Lox's shopping list: 24 pot noodles, one large bottle of ketchup, fish fingers, 6 pack of monster munch, and some foie gras.

Jimmy: Ah.... In that case I hope they show it here in Italy sooner or later I'd love to see it...

Mon Jun 4 11:21:05 2007

It's the Monty Python musical based on the Holy Grail, of course! How can you not know these things???
Jimmy
Mon Jun 4 10:33:52 2007

Jimmy: Define Spamalot.... :P
Lox
Mon Jun 4 10:32:01 2007

Hello everyone! I've just had an ace weekend- Alison & I went to see Spamalot. The show was really bloody funny. It was really great to see some of my all-time favourite gags being performed on stage!
Jimmy
Mon Jun 4 08:16:17 2007

Morning all! :)
Nigel
Mon Jun 4 07:35:50 2007

How shit is to suffer from jet lag both when travelling to and coming back from Japan? VERY SHIT! :(
Lox
Mon Jun 4 05:21:33 2007

Totally crap day until aperitif time, when we went to a small party for Gianfranco's birthday, then after that, with no "attaches" (read no females) we went to see a movie "The Darwin Awards" which was quite nice, considering that it was chosen solely because we happened to walk in front of the cinema... :P
Lox
Sun Jun 3 21:42:50 2007

Nigel

Sat Jun 2 23:06:48 2007

Evening! :)
Yes, the further you go west, the less of all types of interesting signals you seem to get, John! (Or so I've found anyway!)
Kev: I always get the feeling it's us Brits who aren't European... Stuck on this little island, out of the way a bit...
Nigel
Sat Jun 2 22:23:57 2007

Lox are you sure, I was always in two minds as to whether or not being Italian actually qualifies as European? :) :) :) :)

Yawn.. well i am off to bed now good night all
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:55:17 2007

:) Not that I expect my roughly-treated ears could differentiate the new, higher-quality sound anyway. I once went to a concert where "Rose Tattoo" were the warm up act. My hearing was wrecked. Don't actually think I could hear the main act due to the ringing in my ears...
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 23:51:48 2007

lol "portable" I like that, I think that I will use that term when I lend my friends that latest "portable" episode of Lost.
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:42:05 2007

Yeah, I've sussed out the process but not the difference technically. I suppose the tracks (14 in my case) are at a higher bit-rate. Plus having NO DRM makes them, er, more "portable"...
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 23:38:51 2007

Just sounds like a cash-cow to me... ... .... YEAR 2019 - Upgrade to new ITunes 8.9 you can get 4096Kps Ultra Super High Quality Recordings ony ВЈ19.99 per track
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:36:30 2007

Hm,m Itunes, upgrade to HQ for more money, why weren't they that quality to start with!
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:34:32 2007

Kev: Yeah, on the job front... I was sorely tempted though for just those reasons... Back to customer support for IT etc... Much better. Money was the same though... On balance I was being... "Sensible" (Did I really say that?)
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 23:32:54 2007

Cheers Kev! That *is* one of my aims! Though knowing my luck... Incidentally I've just upgraded iTunes to the latest 7.2. It has this higher-quality, DRM-free music on there now. Apparently I can upgrade all those tracks I've already bought, to HQ ones for Ј2.80... Can't yet see which tracks... but it looks intriguing!
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 23:31:12 2007

Nigel, yeah that sounds a bit offputting if it turning temporary like that, but then again how many jobs are really permanent? esp in the public sector or anything these days ?
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:30:47 2007

Oops
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:26:30 2007

Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:26:12 2007

Just make sure theres no falling off ladder incidents next week!
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:26:10 2007

Yes does sound a bit dismal, i suppose you miss out on office banter type things. A bit like being a bank clerk but with no counter to be behind.
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:25:43 2007

Tea at work is a highlight of my day!! :) But yes, it's great not having to go for a whole week. I actually had a job interview this week. It had been advertised as "permanent" but when it came to the nitty-gritty it had been changed to "temporary" for 18-months. :( Having a mortgage and all, it was too risky for only a short-lived gain. Or so I felt...
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 23:25:42 2007

Sounds pretty miserable Nigel - all the more glad to hear you've got next week off then!
John
Fri Jun 1 23:22:27 2007

:D
Well the nearest to deskfast I get is a mug of tea at my 'station before the main doors open. It has to be finished and out of sight by the time the public arrive. After that I have to sit in a cramped tea-room the size of your average bathroom, with fifteen other people, twice a day. One person breathes in, the rest have to breathe out...
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 23:21:05 2007

yes, I mean how exactly do normal people manage to eat without the internet ?
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:17:53 2007

I'm not sure my digestive system would work any more without a screen to stare at and a keyboard for the crumbs to fall into.
John
Fri Jun 1 23:16:28 2007

Well I am quite fortunate and have an excellent window seat.
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:14:07 2007

John: I sit with my back to a window when dealing with the public... Natural light and a quick exit if I need it!!
Kev: Ah! Rumbled! Yes the old garage did feature in *my* plans, but perhaps not so in my better-halfs! (Incidentally I feel an Ebay selling spree coming on...)
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 23:13:11 2007

Ha ha! I hadn't heard deskfast before! I do that too!
John
Fri Jun 1 23:12:34 2007

Nigel, does that mean you will spend next week precariously hanging from a ladder whilst trying to clean out guttering? Perhaps you should "clean out your garage" and must not be disturbed ( secretly tinkering on your excellent collection of old computer bits :)
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:09:53 2007

I know exactly what you mean Kev! I think that working culture comes along with a company - back in Pangbourne it just wasn't the done thing to work long hours... but also I guess I'm a lot more "career minded" than I used to be. A few years ago I was happy as long as the salary paid the rent, I could have a beer every now and again, and I could keep hold of my seat near the window. Incidentally I don't have a seat near a window now, and I didn't in Japan either. I think that speaks volumes. Errr.
John
Fri Jun 1 23:09:22 2007

Kev: worse, you jumped from unemployment into long-hours. A nasty shock to the system!
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 23:08:12 2007

a quick google search informs me that I really meant al-desko, I also partake in deskfast too.
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:07:30 2007

That's a good reason then! :) I've just watched the weather for over here - Saturday sunny and warm; rain on Sunday. Although I am off work next week, I think Joc has plenty of "little jobs" lined up for me. I shall be busy!
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 23:06:35 2007

Actually, being a workaholic is something I can now understand. Previously ( to my current employment ) I dont think I ever really understood the working long hours hours mentality. Recently however ( the last year) i've gradually been eased into 8am-7pm lifestyle with a 20 minute el-deskso lunch ( ref. John). These days working till 7 seems like nothing out of the ordinary but I do remember a time when going home at 5.45 was the norm . Very strange.
Kev
Fri Jun 1 23:04:10 2007

Yes Nigel, it would be hard to deny based on this week's routine! However, I'm going to visit my grandmother over the weekend, and she doesn't have any form of internet connection, and I'm going to be back in London until Monday lunchtime. So that's a whole 60 hours or so of rest. :)
John
Fri Jun 1 22:55:31 2007

Travis, do you have an iPod? Have you seen the "iTunes U" within the iTunes store? Seems to mean "University". Hadn't noticed it before. Just found "Elementary Greek" in there. Seems to be a free audio book type of thing. Not seen this section before so as I explore I may realise it is of no use to anyone, but thought I'd mention it just the same. :)
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 22:55:13 2007

I think you mentioned "Workaholic" earlier in the week, John! ;)
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 22:47:33 2007

I'm still working... all though at least the wonders of VPN mean I'm now at home. Only had one beer in the fridge which didn't last long, will probably move on to the whisky in a bit, but still have a couple of things to sort out before I can really slack off.
John
Fri Jun 1 22:38:22 2007

Safe journey, Lox! :)
Nigel
Fri Jun 1 21:14:41 2007

Leaving the hotel, will connect from the usual lounge in Narita!! Hope everyone is ok and is having a great time drinking on a Friday evening!

Oh... You have my sympathies, John! I don't quite know why but the importance of an alcoholic beverage on my return was of utmost importance tonight!!

Sounds nice Nigel! Alas I am still at work, and no prospect of leaving in the immediate future...
John
Fri Jun 1 18:36:27 2007

So then, I'm back home, with the prospect of a week off work and have just opened a Murphy's... Cheers! :)

Indeed, but you also implied that the lack of perfect square waves was a fault with the sequence of sine waves. In fact, you can't get one in "The real world" either. So what's the problem?

hello !
Best regards

Erm yes. Like I said.

You'll never get a "Perfect" square wave in the real world either ... because you're always bandwidth-limited. Find out how much bandwidth you require, and Mr. Fourier will tell you how many sine-waves are required to approximate your waveform up to your specified bandwidth limit.

Fourier theory is a mathematical system. It's not completely practical. You never get an exactly square wave, for example, because the real world doesn't quite work that way.

So then John, your "monkeys" are what Google Gears is then! The ability to browse the internet off line!! :)))))))))

John: Actually thinking about what I just said, since I know you a little, I take everything back...

John: If you manage to break Google I am personally going to make you King of the World and give you one hundred million dollars cash on the spot.

I thought Fourier showed a way to describe waveforms in smaller, easier to work with finite "series", which could be recombined to recreate the original. I guess (though am no expert) that this is a "lossy" system.
Nigel

...alternative get an infinite number of monkeys to randomly hit buttons on the keyboard until they find the page you're looking for. One of the great things about this approach is that you don't even need the internet, as the infinite monkey theory goes, one of those monkeys will write the page you're looking for.

I propose a new genetic search algorithm. Start of with a pool of randomly generated URLs, then enter each one into your browser and assign them a score based on how relevant the results are. Then mutate and breed the best URLs together, and repeat. Several million iterations of this ought to find you the page you want.

Noone in this office can bear to contemplate the idea of Google search going down. How will we search the net?
Rob Lang
Fri Jun 1 15:12:57 2007

In the ongoing saga of my challenging week at work, I'm about to try and avert one disaster by potentially causing another. If you've got anything important you need to search for, may I suggest you get it done in the next ten minutes or so?
John

I thought Fourier demonstrated that waveforms could be approximated by sine waves. To replicate many waveforms, you need an infinite number of sine waves, which is impossible.

There was once a Mr Fourier
Who proved that waveforms were curvier
He went round the bend
Signing lines without end
Showing that cosines were funnier

:D

Killing sine-waves could be a very bad idea. There was once a Mr. Fourier who demonstrated that all waveforms are composed of sine-waves. So if you destroyed sines, you'd pretty much destroy everything else as well. And that goes doubly for JPEG (and I'm sure John will back me up here) which is based on the DCT - the discreet cosine transform. Just thought I should warn you about the possible consequences, before you destroy TV, music, photographs, radio, Maths teachers etc. ...

Sine waves are nasty. KILL THE SINE WAVES.

Thanks Rob! As has often been said before I'm sure, life is like a sin (sine?) wave - it can be kicking you in the nuts one day, then giving you a head and shoulder massage the next.

Oh I think I can do better than that Kev. (I think this was dsp's fine craftsmanship - I've no idea how it works, it just does)

I suppose we'll never know what you were "showing off" john ( unless you provide a link to last month that is ?)

Too cold? Hokkaido is the best part of Japan! (well, in terms of scenery anyway, obviously it's a bit lacking in terms of bars and stuff)

I am the only one here at the moment, you guys and gals are all sleeping soundly in your comfy beds, while I have already put a good 5 hours work under the belt! I wanna go homeeeeeeeeeeee...

John: Show off..... Actually I have just met the emperor, nice chap, very quiet, promised me Hokkaido but I had to turn down because it's too cold.
