John - Fri Aug 31 15:53:45 2001 Hmmm not sure what you mean Tom... I kind of had the morning off, went to Oriental City and had a very nice bento. Does that count? John - Fri Aug 31 14:39:33 2001 Did anyone else not have to work today? Or tomorrow for that matter? ;-) rowanboy - Thu Aug 30 19:13:15 2001 I've discovered just about the best thing I've ever seen on the web, it's a LEGO version of the Camelot song (from Monty Python and the Holy Grail). Niiiiiiice! John - Thu Aug 30 15:59:45 2001 John - Thu Aug 30 13:50:13 2001 John - Thu Aug 30 13:44:15 2001 John: I've never had much luck with USB on NT. It's not designed as a P'n'P OS, so I guess that explains why. Jon: I've got a Canon N656U working fine under W2K (the little brother of your scanner!).. I just plugged it in and it worked (after sticking the driver CD)? Sorry I can't help - but at least you know it should work on W2k! rowanboy - Thu Aug 30 13:36:57 2001 John: Yes! I am going tonight! Simon - Thu Aug 30 13:31:35 2001 Simon - is it Dorset Steam Fair this week? If so, I think I know the man running the beer tent... John - Thu Aug 30 10:24:42 2001 Thanks Simon! It's something else for me to try... I didn't know before you could get anything useful from right clicking on .inf files... I could give this a go (although it'll have to wait until tomorrow)... Cheers! John - Thu Aug 30 09:58:11 2001 I think this is it Place the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive, open the Drvlib\Pnpisa\x86 folder on the CD-ROM, right-click the Pnpisa.inf file, and then click Install. Restart your computer when you are prompted. It works for detecting sound cards...dunno about USB though....worth a try I guess Simon - Thu Aug 30 09:01:30 2001 There is a way you can activate a kind of 'plug and playness' in NT. There is an inf file somewhere on the CD (I think) which can be right clicked and then select 'Install'. The problem is that I can't remember what said inf file is called. So this message is probably no help at all. Sorry. Simon - Thu Aug 30 08:58:49 2001 John don't talk to me about USB, spent all bloody weekend with A Canon N1220 USB Scanner, trying to get the fucker to work. Didn't bother telling me that it doesn't work under Win98, or Win2000. Jon - Wed Aug 29 16:13:53 2001 Hmmmm... sort of got it at least to recognise the USB ports, using EdgeUSB. It recognises the USB device is there but I can't get any data out of it. The trouble is it won't do the plug and play stuff. So I have a .INF file, but it doesn't go looking for it, so the device doesn't get registered... How can I manually register a new piece of hardware in NT? There isn't the Add New Hardware wizard like you get in 95/98/ME... John - Wed Aug 29 16:07:50 2001 Technical question here. I've got a machine with NT4 installed and some USB ports. How can I get the USB ports to work? John - Wed Aug 29 11:00:28 2001 Actually, Tom used a > which won't bugger up anything by itself... It's the < that causes all the problems... John - Wed Aug 29 10:52:19 2001 Naaaaaaaaaaaice Jon! John - Wed Aug 29 10:50:30 2001 I would like to point out that at £72,100.00 It still didn't meet it's reserve. Oh and for the quick description: "LINUX UK Car registration A must for the techies among us. I will pay the DVLA transfer fee. PS: This is being sold under hey_tj. Please mail jleitch@insecurity.co.uk for more info. Instant response. Enjoy it. Love it. Live Free. LINUX" A Few mistakes: "LINUX" - Ur, no it's L7NUX as pointed out by Mr. Tom Rowan. (Bsc Hons.) "A must for the techies among us." - So this man is claiming to be a techie - Hmmmm.... how would that it be if he has enough money to have owned this reg plate? "I will pay the DVLA transfer fee" - Well thank fuck for that. I don't think I could have afforded £25.00 to have that done. "Live Free" - Yeah right. We all live under a tirany of conspiracy and paranoia. Jon - Wed Aug 29 07:44:10 2001 I think we should all applaud Tom for being able to do a <a > without buggering up the board. Well Done. Jon - Wed Aug 29 07:38:42 2001 Yeah, I'm gonna put it on my car. Because I am that sad that I need to be able to distinguish my car from the rest in the car park. Jon - Wed Aug 29 07:37:19 2001 Somebody actually bid 72000 pounds then... That is bloody rediculous... John - Tue Aug 28 18:33:12 2001 Tom, even if I had > 72 grand to spare i wouldn't spend it on a vanity plate to put on a 2 grand skoda. I'd buy an A2 or something. A2s are nice. Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Tue Aug 28 16:48:54 2001 Doh I just read your email Lorenzo - sorry please ignore last post! John - Tue Aug 28 10:51:13 2001 Hey Lorenzo - I assume you saw the pictures I took in Italy...? They're in the usual place... John - Tue Aug 28 10:47:43 2001 I have a new site... go check it out... www.grafiq.com/sestosenza It's in italian but I am working to an english version too... ciaocaiocaico Lorenzo Lox - Fri Aug 24 16:59:55 2001 There is a van parked opposite labelled 'Ellis & Co, Builders and Restorers'. Nice. Simon - Fri Aug 24 09:12:30 2001 Check what's for sale on ebay: L7NUX ... andy, you are REQUIRED to bid for this for your car. rowanboy - Thu Aug 23 17:11:41 2001 No no no no Rob. I watched First Knight on the telly the other night, are you getting confused with A Knight's Tale? Although both are utter drivel. It seems as a general rule that putting the word knight in your film is a sure fire way to make it papper than a very pap thing, on St. Pap's day, celebrated in Papsville, Tennesee, by the Pappist monks of the order of, um, Pap. Errr, yea. John - Thu Aug 23 11:10:58 2001 You actually went to see it? You plonker, John! I'm waiting for First Grape to come out... Rob Lang <sooty@bullet-systems.com> Highmead Close, Reading - Wed Aug 22 23:45:12 2001 I've written a gameboy advance game. It's here. At least till nintendo sue me. Get an emulator and check it out. If you want to. Graf - Wed Aug 22 15:50:04 2001 I think you all need to go here, and remember to click lots of buttons. John - Wed Aug 22 11:41:30 2001 No. Yet I have the misfortune of hearing you moan about it. Jon - Wed Aug 22 10:44:53 2001 - Wed Aug 22 10:44:45 2001 No. Yet I have the misfortune of hearing you moan about it. Jon - Wed Aug 22 10:44:24 2001 Did anyone else have the misfortune yesterday evening to think it might be a good idea to watch First Knight? Amazing how close it is to worst shite. John - Wed Aug 22 10:37:46 2001 Thanks Tom for looking I'd completely managed to forget that I might give it a go at some point. No, Thanks. No, really. Jon - Wed Aug 22 10:14:57 2001 Although, that is not as interesting as the following RFC: http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc0968.txt?number=968 rowanboy - Tue Aug 21 18:31:14 2001 The POP3 protocol is defined by RFC 1939 (although updated later by, um, RFC2449 and RFC1957)... some bedtime reading for you Jon! rowanboy - Tue Aug 21 18:21:26 2001 Jon - Really? So I assume we'd be basically writing a POP3 client in perl or whatever... hmmm I bet something like that exists already... John - Tue Aug 21 15:10:41 2001 Rob - it doesn't work because the 'maison is too big. The script checks all files in all directories to see which are new, but now there's so much stuff in the maison that it can't do this before the server complains and deletes the process. This also applies to the search facility (they use the same program underneath). I might one day write a better version, but I don't really have time at the moment! John - Tue Aug 21 15:08:22 2001 Is there any reason why the 'What's New' script does not work? Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Tue Aug 21 11:55:45 2001 Is there any reason why the 'What's New' script does not work? Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Tue Aug 21 11:55:28 2001 John, yes we can build a PHP / Perl / ASP Interface up for a POP3 account. However can I be arsed?..... Perhaps. I'll have a quick look at some point to see what RFC number POP3 is. I'll mail you. Jon - Tue Aug 21 07:50:36 2001 I've just come back from the Fez where there were some very beautiful women. One of them though... Oh My God, She's So Gorgeous!Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> Highmead Close, Reading - Tue Aug 21 00:42:06 2001 I like it. John - Mon Aug 20 17:24:40 2001 Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Mon Aug 20 16:41:46 2001 Jon - is there any way we can get a web interface to a POP3 mailbox we set up on one of our domains? John - Mon Aug 20 15:02:49 2001 Pictures from Swindon are on the web, no comments though I'm afraid! John - Mon Aug 20 15:02:08 2001 Thanks Rob! I've just made it my wallpaper too - it is rather nice isn't it? John - Mon Aug 20 14:19:33 2001 Damn straight Simon me ole mukka. Saw Rush Hour 2 on Sunday night. Absolutely cool. I recommend it to all. Not much of a story but 100% enjoyable none the less. Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Mon Aug 20 13:45:27 2001 Yeah, nice Rob - Haven't seen you in ages old boy - we'll have to make sure you can make the next get together... Simon - Mon Aug 20 13:11:16 2001 Pity I missed it. I spent the day doing massive amounts of gardening at the Squadron. I'll make the next one, I promise. Double promise. With cheese. Planet of the Apes was shit. Planet of the Grapes rules. Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Mon Aug 20 12:25:53 2001 John: The Champagne and Guiness's are safely residing in my fridge ready for next time... Simon - Mon Aug 20 09:01:27 2001 Actually my mate Si. Do you know what time things are going to kick off tomorrow? Jon - Fri Aug 17 13:05:13 2001 Aye Jon - Fri Aug 17 13:04:42 2001 John and Jon - See you tommorrow!! Ain't it great! Simon - Fri Aug 17 11:46:21 2001 Rob, I'm glad you licked it, especially Ironing Nelson's Column. JON - Fri Aug 17 11:33:45 2001 So, what's happening this weekend then John? Do you need a lift, do you? Jon - Fri Aug 17 11:33:07 2001 That's classic. I'm taking an iron to the Gliding School next time I go! Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Thu Aug 16 16:55:55 2001 I would just like to point out http://www.extremeironing.com Jon E - Thu Aug 16 14:12:14 2001 I had a nice chicken sandwich with a can of coke (sob - not the real thing) with a side order of 3 games of pool. Which I won. Hurrah. John, you're right, it is the last Highmead party. :) Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Thu Aug 16 14:06:32 2001 According to my count-down-o-meter, I have 1 day, 2 hours and 8 mins left before I break-up from work for my holidays!! dsp - Thu Aug 16 13:51:00 2001 For my lunch today I had a McDonald's BigMac meal, with coffee. dsp - Thu Aug 16 13:49:58 2001 Ham and lettuce sandwiches, Jam sandwiches, crisps, cheese cookies and a banana. Simon - Thu Aug 16 13:49:23 2001 Pop quiz. Err, what did you all have for lunch? I had a sandwich involving pickle. It was not bad. John - Thu Aug 16 13:45:04 2001 Nice to see Matt's head in the corner there. I'm judging by my shirt this picture was from the Highmead joint birthday / leaving party last spring. Am I right? John - Thu Aug 16 13:26:16 2001 Looking a second time, you know it almost looks like John has just burst into tears at the hideousness of it all. Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Thu Aug 16 11:03:39 2001 A picture of John while he was going through his 'Chubby Lasses' phase. John - Thu Aug 16 09:19:44 2001 As a suggestion, and for a bit of human interest, i reckon that when posting nerdy pictures we should include ourselves in them looking smug. Over time we can then go thru the archives of the msgboard and chart the development of/observe (in alphabetical order)

John - Wed Aug 15 16:46:00 2001 rowanboy - Wed Aug 15 14:41:11 2001 I wish had been around more for the making of Aliens. :( Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Wed Aug 15 12:07:53 2001 Ner ner, we made our own films.. You left us behind a video that said aliens on it, but doesn't appear to have your aliens film on it. I was very disappointed I'm going to be near(ish) donnington at the weekend (actually I'm not convinced it's the same donnington but anyway). I'm going to V2001 - just plotting a route bearing in mind the Leon(?) method of festival roundabout handling. Oh and I got a new car, but it's a Skoda, so you can all be not impressed. Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Wed Aug 15 11:52:21 2001 Chie brought her video recorder to my flat last week. So over the weekend I watched Aliens (I secretly made a copy ages ago and have been hiding it ever since). I laughed so much I was in tears. So I'd like to remind us all that we are totally great. At least anyone that was in that film. Tom, Andy and Simon - you're not so great. John - Wed Aug 15 11:39:40 2001 You can buy those scorpion lollipop things in Selfridges, you know. Or at least you could, while the Tokyo Life exposition (or whatever you call it) was on. Apparently they're popular in Japan?! John - Wed Aug 15 11:36:53 2001 Amazingly, I was reading the latest HTML spec earlier, and on the pages where <pre> and <img> are defined there's a footnote saying "not for use by Tom Rowan". John - Wed Aug 15 11:34:14 2001 Good moaning. Anyone for a scorpion lollipop? Graf <graf@altavista.net> - Wed Aug 15 10:29:02 2001 I give up. Jon E - Wed Aug 15 09:18:09 2001 Shit. rowanboy - Wed Aug 15 09:05:31 2001 There is a story about a student of information theory on his firstday at college. He had entered a strange, bizarre world. The onlysounds were the occasional calling out of a number by one of theprofessors, followed by laughter. One professor would say '52',there would be a short pause then peels of laughter. Someone elsesays '713'. Same thing, everyone falls down laughing. "What'sgoing on here" he asked his tutor. "We're telling jokes" said his tutor. "Telling Jokes?" "Yes, you see we’ve all worked here so long we know each other's jokes. There are a thousand of them. So, being information theorists we applieddata compression. We just assigned them all numbers, 0 thru 999. Itsaves a lot of time and effort. Would you like to try? Just say anynumber 0 to 999..." He wasn't fully convinced. But he tried. Very quietly he whispered "477". Hardly a murmur. He looked at his tutor. "What's wrong" he said. "Try again" says the tutor. So he does. "318" - same again, not a thing, hardly a murmur. "Something's wrong" he says. "Well" says the tutor, it's like this. - It's not so much the joke asthe way you tell it!" rowanboy - Wed Aug 15 09:04:59 2001 Or even hope. I suppose hopping may help as kind of anti-rain dance. Simon - Tue Aug 14 17:26:18 2001 Yep - excitement mounting - lets hop weather is OK for barbecue! Simon - Tue Aug 14 17:25:40 2001 Ooooh only four days to go until Swindonfest.... ooooh John - Tue Aug 14 17:24:16 2001 Rob: Yes sounds good! (With reference to earlier film proposal). I'm using snort (www.snort.org) cos it's free AND very flexible. Rob Lang <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Tue Aug 14 14:30:32 2001 Actually that is all a lie, I'm trying to derive a multivariate gaussian for time series classification and it is doing my head in. Reading <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Tue Aug 14 14:29:36 2001 Loon actually comes from the word Luna, meaning moon. In the 12 century AD (well of course it's AD), a Scotsman decided to try and build a tower from the top of his nearby mountain to the moon (as was the fashion in that time). He never finished it. He was described as being lune-crazy which was shortened to loonie. I then shortened once more to give 'loon'. It means crazy. Like mad as a spoon but not so severe. Reading <icar@icar.co.uk> MADLAB, Reading - Tue Aug 14 14:28:56 2001 A bit like someone who sporadically enters messages twice. Simon - Tue Aug 14 13:16:26 2001 Loon I imagine is short for Loonie, as in silly slighty mad person..... Simon - Tue Aug 14 13:16:10 2001 Do you mean physical intruders or internet ones? Simon - Tue Aug 14 13:15:12 2001 John: Good point. Just didn't have a sun monitor available, so had to do it over serial. The reason for installing linux is to build an intrusion detection system for home. rowanboy - Tue Aug 14 12:55:53 2001 For tomorrow, why not take a flask in with you? Hope this helps. dsp - Tue Aug 14 12:51:39 2001 Imagine my horror on realising today the little cafe down the end of the corridor is closed for three weeks. Any suggestions? Hopefully next weekend will fix that. Simon - Fri Aug 10 13:44:31 2001 You're right, it's bloody tiresome round here. Mike - Fri Aug 10 12:46:04 2001 Errrmmm errr is everyone like really busy this week or something? The message board is really dull. John - Fri Aug 10 12:38:09 2001 ...that one person was Rob. Plus I suspect if Rob hadn't put a large message in red on the board you'd have all forgotten altogether... moan, moan, whinge, whinge... John - Wed Aug 8 13:26:46 2001 For my birthday this year a whole one friend turned up for the celebratory night out. I think 24 must be a funny age or something. John - Wed Aug 8 13:24:01 2001 No. Norman - Wed Aug 8 13:23:36 2001 Sorry Tim! Hope you had a nice day anyway... John - Wed Aug 8 13:22:46 2001 It was my birthday on Monday and you all forgot. Does that count? dsp - Wed Aug 8 12:30:04 2001 I was considering going waterskiing tomorrow. Does that count? Mike - Wed Aug 8 12:13:25 2001 Anyone planning on being interesting at any point this week? John - Wed Aug 8 12:02:36 2001 Has anyone been watching Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy? I think the last part was on last night... I suppose it is to mark Douglas Adams dying which was quite upsetting and totally pointless... Still though, couldn't help but think of Jon whenever Marvin appeared... John - Wed Aug 8 10:44:48 2001 Over the last week I've rediscovered my liking for Ginger nuts. I also enjoyed Abernetty biscuits for the first time - possibly only available in Scotland, but a jolly nice Gaelic (not garlic) twist on the old favourite Rich Tea. John - Mon Aug 6 11:11:09 2001 The Jaffa Cakes were great. The cost difference allows you to scoff lots, or share them with colleages. The sponge is softer than Standard jaffa cakes, Other than that, no significant difference. dsp - Mon Aug 6 09:41:16 2001 So, how were the jaffa cakes then?! Simon - Mon Aug 6 08:33:17 2001 Took your advice (Graf/John) and bought a PCMCIA card reader for Compact Flash cards. Much easier, just like a removable disk. And you can store other things on them in a kind of spy-like way!
Also, I bought another 128Mb of CF cards, so I can take allmy pictures at high res. Nice :-) |
