OF course, the biggest problem is that it takes so long a) talking about it b) programming the damned thing that you'd have been better just letting the poor old single processor get on with the problem. ;-)
tom
- Wed Aug 25 18:20:35 2004
Following the same theory to its logical conclusion... if you divide an O(n^2) problem across n^2 processors it can be solved in O(1). Which is better than O(n). I think I may gate crash this conference with my radical new theory. I bet Ali was saving this...
dsp

Now, I've been asking the guys in my office if they think it's bleedin' obvious too. One of them (Brian) said "Well, if you have reconfigurable hardware, you can trade-off pipeline length with number of pipelines". I showed him your slide-show (rather nice, by the way). "Handel-C!" he excalimed. "I used to make that". It seems he actually had some part in making Handel-C itself. "So John's your dream user?" I asked. "No, he's a git" came the reply.

Rob Lang
- Tue Aug 24 14:19:07 2004
Tim - yea it is still the same horse, but still a valid one - it's all about scalability you see! Does it help at all if we rephrase a bit. Instead of thinking of it as requiring O(n) processes to solve an O(n*n) problem in linear time, how about instead I say we take an O(n*n) problem, which we can, if we want, solve with a single processor, which will of course require O(n*n) time. However, for every extra processing resource we can get our hands on, we can take an nth off the computation time, up to a maximum of n processors, at which point the algorithm becomes linear.
Assuming you consider the universe to be finite, then in the future there will almost certainly be more processors available, but also less time in which to use them (not to mention higher demands on what they do).

John, love the slides. Is Ali still flogging the "if you use n processors you can transform an O(n)^2 algorithm into an n x O(n) algorithm" horse? Its a bit like saying 20 people can travel on a train, or they can each make 20 separate car journeys. I think all this time later I am still missing the point. Clearly.

Rob Lang

No. I think the problem is to do with ownership. Previously I've been working on projects that I've had a lot of personal investment in. Whereas the current one is a pet project for one of the directors which I have had no creative input for whatsoever. So it's really hard to take an interest in it.
John

Me too John. Are you working on anything interesting at the moment? (clearly not if you're bored)

Actually that was my complicated way of saying "yes, let's do it!"... I'm sure Kev will be up for it, and we might even be graced with Simon's presence, depending on the timing, as he is in and out of the country a lot at the moment.

Funnily enough I went to Oxford last night, including a visit to the ever wonderful Turf Tavern. I think I am now actually capable of finding it all by myself *whilst sober*, although that wasn't the case last night, thankfully.

The general advice seems to try code number 7 first.
To get the '+' in the code, use * 2 times
To get the 'p' in the code, use * 3 times
To get the 'w' in the code, use * 4 times

Fine point Jimmy. I always say it Coll-in. I suppose that John, being working class, will pronounce it "Cole-n Pooell" like they would on the estates.

56 deceits, eh? It all seems like a sad attempt to close

humiliated on a big screen.

Finally, has Ali G ever had Moore on his show?
Travis
- Sat Aug 14 01:49:38 2004
Graf, I don't watch Moore's films (but love documentaries) and don't get much involved with politics but here's a site to check. I guess the thing to do would be to compare the sites and see what's what. www.davekopel.com/Terror/ Fiftysix-Deceits-in-Fahrenheit-911.htm
Travis

Do most see him as unpatriotic? Well, certainly Republicans do. Democrats are pretty accepting of him. There is a documentary out entitled, "Michael Moore Hates America" which is a funny idea. The filmmaker does the same moves Moore does but only in this one, Moore is the target and he acts much like the corporate neerdowells (?) he criticizes.

Is he getting to be quite unpopular in America then...? Do Americans see him is unpatriotic...? Unfortunately I think that will probably work in his favour abroad!
John
- Thu Aug 12 10:48:31 2004
I get the impression this new film is on a slightly different tack though.... I think he just has some pretty strong ideas about political matters, and isn't too bothered about the finer details of the truth getting in the way of him getting his message across... A bit like a politician, I suppose.
John
- Thu Aug 12 10:47:17 2004
He did a few TV series here a few years ago, which were never particularly contraversial, so I guess I never had any reason to question him previously... I saw Bowling for Columbine a few months back and most of the things he said there seemed pretty believeable really.
John
- Thu Aug 12 10:46:54 2004
As an American, I should chime in. I haven't seen 9/11 and probably won't. Have you read/heard about Moore's filmmaking 'tactics'? The masses don't realize that he is a filmmaker and not a documentarian. He simply lies and twists the truth.

I watched it. Now, clearly the thing is biassed, but if even a small amount of it is true, then that really is rather shocking. I would have thought that Kerry could raise masses of campaign funds by campaigning in all the world's other countries. I know I'd pay a few quid to be shot of dubya. He really is the most dangerous man on earth.
Jimmy
