... of course, I onyl did it to meet Kate Bush, but it transpired that it was a different Kate (can you Adam & Eve it???) and she's "Head of Art Galleries" at the Barbican. Oh well, it's better then letting Tracey Emin have it (she is actaully a man).

John- I already did that, and took the Turner prize in 2005. I entered my wet photos under the name "Simon Starling". It was quite a simple matter, really ... all I had to do was pretend they were not photos, but a sculpture, and then natter on about how they draw together a wide range of cultural, political and historical references. Of course, I also claimed that I transformed and reframed existing objects using a rigorous process of research. The jury just loved it!

Rob: the camera never worked again mind. I vaguely recall trying to get the roll of film (that was in it at the time) developed anyway. The prints that came out oddly looked, well, wet. No doubt some art student will steal this idea immediately after me making this post, take some edgy and controversial pictures, drop the camera in the lily ponds at Monet's garden, then get the resulting prints exhibited at the Tate Modern and go on to win the Turner prize. Etc.
John

As a small piece of trivia, I dropped my camera in the lily ponds at Monet's garden. I think I can actually identify the place where it went into the water on one of his famous paintings. Somehow or other I actually managed to retrieve said camera though, so disappointingly you can't have the added highlight of looking for it if you go there.

John: Don't the Japanese use the term "seppuku" or maybe "sepukku"? The first one looks right, as I think about it, but I'm not sure.
Rob: I used to play with green plastic "army men" all the time. I would have a few on standby whose heads/arms/legs I'd removed for battlefield carnage. Should that be alarming?

Jimmy - Good idea! Using a phrase like that is so left-of-field it would throw the recipient completely, leaving them wondering if you meant it or not! I like the prospect!

Jimmy
Wed Aug 30 10:13:48 2006
Oh yeah- I've invented a new linguistic concept: non-rhyming slang. For instance, if you want a pint of beer, you could say "Stick another Marquis of Denby in there, luv!". Of it you're really knackered at the end of a day, you can say "I am totally torque-wrench". Never mind Pete Tong ... if something goes wrong, you can say it's "gone all Norman Tebbit." What do you think poeple? I think we should try to put a dictionary together, and then try to get our non-rhyming phrases into everyday use. Of course, we'd have to start in the workplace (and infect our colleagues) so we'd need a load of IT-related non-rhymes to begin with, and then just take it from there. Anybody up for helping me with a phrase book?
Jimmy

Morning all! Yes, I always setup XP to look like the older 2000 grey look! For some reason I actually think it looks better than the original - perhaps the sizes or colours or something. Mind you, at the moment I'm only running XP as a virtual machine on the Mac, though Joc still uses it on her machine...
Nigel
Wed Aug 30 09:25:59 2006
Has anyone else messed around with Vista much? For almost the first time today I decided to go and take a really thorough look (I only normally work in one tiny little area, so am only dimly aware of what is going on in the rest of the OS). To be honest I was never totally sure about that whole Aero business, but I found it looks really nice when I change the colour scheme back to "Windows Standard", which then looks like 2000. In fact I always do the same on XP machines as well. I don't want glass, I don't want green and blue plastic, I just want, well, grey really.
John
Wed Aug 30 08:51:46 2006
John: That's IT! I am buying Vista when it's out! It is exactely what I was looking for, good Microsoft, great work! Of course I am sure that this feature will come out on FFox 2.0, but if they thought of it first then they are finally getting SOME act together... Please quote me on this post when I'll complain about the HD being formatted by some faulty code in Vista! :)
Lox
Wed Aug 30 08:46:42 2006
Kev - I believe it is actually written "hara kiri". Hara means stomach (as in "hara peko" - my stomach is rumbling), and kiri means cut (which you may know from "kiri gami" the alternative form of origami where you're allowed to make cuts as well as folds). Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.
John
Wed Aug 30 08:45:30 2006
Lox: I've been playing with Vista a bit today and it seems IE7 also has a similar-ish feature to the one you are looking for. Essentially you can have multiple home pages, and when you open up the browser each one appears in its own tab. Having previously said I'm not all the bothered about tab browsing, this actually could turn it around for me - it would be quite nice to have several of the pages I commonly visit all load at once when I start the browser.

I think I read
somewhere that
Firefox 2.0 will have a
"session restore"
feature, whatever one
of those is. To be
honest I was never
that bothered about
tabbed browsing. If I
want to group things
together, it tends to
spill out over program
boundaries. So I might
want to associate one
web page with my mail
client, another with a
text editor, another
with visual studio and
so on. Apparently MS
research has
developed a tool to
let you do this sort of
thing, but I haven't
tried it yet. Might give
it a go today.

I think you're mislead, John. *Bon baiser* doesn't mean *good fuck*, if that is what you understood. *Un baiser* is a kiss, though the verb *Baiser* has become vulgar and means indeed to fuck. *Bon baiser de France* simply means *regards from France*... Nothing rude in that ! As a matter of fact, a James Bond film has been entitled in French *Bon baiser de Russie*. I think the English titlewas *From Russia with Love*. To whom do we apologize ?

Jimmy
Fri Aug 25 09:05:56 2006
Lox- the maison was banned at my workplace too- it is indeed blacklisted as pornographic. I suspect that the previous sentence being posted on this message-board is enough to keep it on that blacklist ... I'm guessing that most of these site-rating systems must simlpy crawl the web looking for key words. Somehow I managed to persuade the IT dept. to un-blacklist this site. Hooray!

Kev, John- remember all that hassle with ESEF files!!! It was such a non-standard standard (and not a very well defined one at that). You know how they say that a camel is a horse invented by a committee? Well, EFEF was surely that camel! Could we use the existing text files? Nooooooo ... we had to try to shoehorn Unicode into a Win16 app, JUST IN CASE sombody wanted to use it in a different language. Not that any other country would use that file format anyway. Oh, and it had to have pan-control as well as fade. And the actual DTT implementation spec. meant that the fade-control happened in discreet steps at 10Hz, which resulted in audible clicks. And then Kev ended up policing the police unit, because it wasn't very good at its job. And Norman drove us mad (how is he these days?) Oh well ... it may have been a bit grotty, but at least we shipped in time for the launch date!

Don't forget if its been audio descibed, then it probably works as a show else they would bother! All you need to do is overlay the AD channel with the main audio stream the same as the stb does. I am not sure if they send fade cues with the digital stuff, I don't think they do but you would need to look. If you were post-processing of course, you could just once pass the data and look for the cue in-outs and fade accordingly on the final mix. Of course, it depends on the program, but some content could work very well - particularly music and comedy shows. As demonstrated by Blackadder, certain types of comedy really can work purely from the dialog alone, no narrative track required. Wildlife documentaries might suffer a bit though. :)

That TV to Audio transition is something I'm quite interested in actually. A few years ago audio description services started in the UK (I believe they'd already existed a while before that in the US). So if you're not familiar with the concept, it's an extra audio channel broadcast along witha TV program that gives a narration for what's happening on screen. The intended audience is the visually impaired, but actually it could be a great feature for turning a TV show into a kind of podcast, which you could then listen to on your MP3 player or car stereo on your way into work in the morning.
John
Fri Aug 25 08:02:37 2006
Travis: probably the name audiobook is a bit misleading - so far as I could tell they'd basically just stripped the audio out of the TV show and turned it into an MP3 - there wasn't any extra narration added in or anything. Surprisingly it is still very funny though - perhaps though it might be a bit lost on people who haven't previously watched it.

Ah yes, sorry to have opened up that whole can of worms again. To me it wasn't an issue of whether or not the Americans won the war that bothered me - I'm not a military historian and I have no authority to comment on that. It was simply the sheer fury and hatred that I seemed to prompt from this guy for refusing to do any kind of military work which really shocked me. My girlfriend is from Hiroshima, after all.
John

John - that's ok, didn't actually expect you to keep doing PS, I'd just be bored if I wasn't constantly hassling you to add more features to it! I guess I'll just have to be content with Picasa after all (and the black and white with colour highlight filter thing is cool)! When I stop getting hassled to port PN to linux/add every feature from emacs/make it an FTP client/... I'll stop asking for flickr support! ps. is that how you spell hassling? seems wrong to me.

Hi Travis! Clearly you're one of the few sane individuals!! I have to agree with you that recent history isn't as interesting to me as ancient history. Though lets be frank - people are people are people. The animal hasn't actually changed that much since we "lost" the bicameral mind, has it? And of course we shouldn't blame friends and acquaintances for the sins of our Grandfathers. Where would it end?
Nigel
Thu Aug 24 23:37:01 2006
Speaking as an American who cares little about recent history (last 200 years), but as one who was educated in the US, I think that there are some who literally believe that "we" won the war quite single-handedly. These people are insane. Then there are those who say that US involvement shifted the balance, aided in securing victory. Those people are less insane. Then there are those who say that it was a war far away from the US (at least at the time of the oil embargo; Pearl Harbor is a different story), that they didn't have to join (in any meaningful sense of necessity), but they did. And the result was victory. I'm not a military historian, and I don't care to be honest, but I'm always interested in the way people perceive "us Americans".

In a less dramatic vein, I had a nice new beer today. It's PranQsters, a "Belgian style amber ale" crafted in California. It's well-decorated at beer fests and so forth. It's actually quite good. It's like Plaunaer's dopplebock, but a bit lighter than that, which isn't difficult to do.

Oh heck! I've just read that email John got about the Americans saving world war 2 etc... How awful was that? Is it really true that the US thinks it won WW2 for Europe? What conceit! I am... for once... speechless. My Dad would have laughed and given me a good response to use. I think I'm actually angry for John, now! I'm personally really glad to have friends from around the world - many in the US - but this attitude is what keeps those red-necks holed-up in their bunkers in Nebraska or North Dakota hating the rest of the world...

Simon, Tom: sorry guys, there's pretty much no chance of me picking up Photo Studio and doing any more work on it - that code is so old and rotten now I'm afraid I might get some kind of nasty skin condition if I touch it. I would make it open source, but my conscience couldn't cope with the terrible purposes which it would be used for (the American military were after it, if you remember). In fact, for safety it doesn't even exist in electronic form any more - it has been printed out onto rice paper, and is hidden in the vaults of a monastery here in Japan. The monks (who are blind, incidentally) are under strict instructions to eat it should anything happen to me.

I thought Kev's little aside about mathematicians and "i" numbers was spot on!! This is, for me, the difference between a mathematician and a programmer - programmers have to live in a real world! (Or in Jimmy's case a virtually real world as opposed to an imaginary one!!! :)))) If I was to say anything derisory about mathematics I would have to say:"Imaginery numbers? I mean.... Come on! I can use an imaginary number which will convert my comparative poverty into untold riches! Find the answer guys!"

John- that wouldn't be much of a prize, at a little over $13. I've been mucking about with units and numbers, and what I've come up with is this: Take e (~2.72) and square it (~7.39). Convert from Pascals to PSI (x~0.0001450377 = ~0.00107) then multiply by the speed of light (299,792,458 m/s = ~321285) then times it all by pi (~3.141) gives $1009347 (rounded up to the nearest dollar). I'm not sure what units it would be in, but whatever it is, I'll bet there's a gold one in Paris somewhere!

John - my spam fighting tactic is to make it very simple to change the form's submission url. The spam cretins use a hard-coded form definition and submission url. As an added bonus, every time we delete a message, it effectively gets added to a simple database (OK a text file) of carefully hand picked spam. So in the future we could modify the add message script to check through that file for similar messages, and stop the spam even getting on in the first place.

Mon Aug 21 15:24:07 2006
Right then everybody. My new anti-spam measures seem to work, although please bare (bear?) with me if there are any teething troubles over the first few days. So the idea is that when a message gets added, we also put a little icon on the board. If it was added with a password, we can assume it to be completely "safe". Anything not added with a password will get some kind of little icon next to it (maybe the trashcan is a bit to negative for all those genuine posts without a password?). Anyway, I've made a new script which lets any of us with a username/password delete a message, just by clicking on the little icon. Obviously use this with care, but its not totally the end of the world if you click on the wrong message - you've got to go through a confirmation page first (entering your username/password), and actually nothing gets completely deleted - instead deleted messages get appended to a spam log file. - lthough you have to use FTP to get access to this.

"The only country that has a jury system". Not exactly. We've had a jury system longer than the bloody USA has existed. And a voting system. I mean- US's white house only had it 200th anniversary in the last couple of years. I have socks that are older than that! And yes, in Britain you can always request a trial by jury. It's pretty dismal to hear of such utter crap coming from the mouths of judges.

MM: So you sit there for 2 weeks no matter what? I'd be too antsy, feel like I'm wasting my time. This lasted all of 40 minutes to determine who was eligible, who would serve, etc. It was very orderly. The judge also said that this is the only country that has a jury system. I take it he's plainly wrong...or perhaps there's some ripple our system has that he was referring to.
In the UK, can you always request a trial by jury?

Morning al!! Oh, right Jimmy, I'll think this through, but I'm probably off-beam (bit early in the day as well!). Here goes... Torque is a tangential force at a distance from the centre of rotation... It's a product of the force and distance, I think. Is it measured in newton-metres? I used to have a torque-wrench once... Hmmm... Now there's something in physics called the "moment" in vector notation "r^f". Now I have to be totally honest here Jimmy, I get out my depth, and beyond my education in this respect, very quickly now...
Have you seen this site in your searches? A good set of equations, though somewhat esoteric... http://www.andrijar.com/gyroscope/gyroscope.htm ? :)
Nigel
Wed Aug 16 09:34:39 2006
Jimmy, you should probably find a physics forum like this one www.physicsforums.com and post your question there. It seems pretty busy so I am sure theres a big-brain or two lurking there just waiting to show off ;) failing that I am sure Nigel could knock up a working prototype in his garage using bits from a 1994 Quantum Fireball Harddrive, some car dampner sprigs and an old pram.

Wed Aug 16 09:26:15 2006
Nigel- you say "Inertia, momentum. Gimbal mounts, procession and nutation" ... that's what I'm after. My problem is quite specific though. If I force a gyro to precess at a certain rate, it will generate a torque at 90 degrees to both its spin axis and the input torque axis, and that torque will be the inertia times the spin rate times the precession rate. There is indeed a multitude of web-sites to quote this equation. However, the equation I can't find is the one that tells me how much torque will be reacted back onto the bearings as a result of it being forced to precess at the aforementioned rate. E.g. typically, physics textbooks will say that if you apply a torque at 90 degrees to the spin axis then the gyro WON'T turn in that direction and it will appear infinitely stiff ... but this is obviously untrue otherwise the gyroscopic forces of the wheels would prevent a car from going round a corner. So: how much torque does it take to force the gyro to precess at a given rate?

Travis: well I seem to remember, at the begining, each of the jurors had to stand up one at a time and be introduced to the defendant. If he didn't like the look of one of us someone would have to take our place - very unsettling in the middle of the courtroom. Probably different in the US though. I think our pay rate was the same as unemployment benefit rates. Now I think it's actual lost wages... not sure though.

Yeah, of all the widgets the Guinness/Murphy's ones seem to work best. Perhaps because the drink's make-up is so suited to it. You remember what it was like trying to get a drink at home that tasted (almost) as good as down the pub? We're a lot nearer now... I rather like the widget thingy in the guiness and murphys. Makes all the difference. I remember when I was a lad, before the widget, guiness and murphys was only really available on draught. Now you can enjoy an approximation in the comfort of your own arm chair. Isn't technology brilliant!

Well we all know why then... hic! Cheers! :)

Thinking back something similar happened when I tried to register a brand new, boxed AutoSketch prog. Still cellophane-sealed, brand-spanky; excitedly I installed and tried to register... Whoo! - the letter I got from Autodesk (I still have it for ref) telling me they were suspending the license and "investigating" was brutal. I was "perplexed" and somewhat "miffed". I stormed back to the shop and demanded my money back!! Clearly some staff member had copied the serial number for their own uses...
Nigel

Rob - Do you have a serial number certificate and/or a sticker on your PC with the serial number on it? It sounds to me as though the company who sold you your PC did not supply you with a legit license. This is their fault, not Microsoft.
