The name of the band should be a juxtoposition of the surreal and the eternal. The feline-bovine influence is merely a transient outward sign of the permanance of the rhythmical devices used by the band as a whole. Any attempt to define this in less than 73 different levels would be an insult to the artists integrity.

- Mon Sep 30 17:08:31 2002
Only eight? I thought just the upper forty two were abundantly clear.

Tom, what I was thinking was that I could pick up Mr H on my way through. Also, how easy was it to put guitar mounts on your walls in your living room? I am thinking of doing it to my room. How much were the mounting brackets and what size screws did you use?
Rob Lang
- Fri Sep 27 11:43:23 2002
Nice mate, here's a few little pointers!
I'd make the width of the greets box such that it sits in the middle of the side panel. You can get away with making it a fair bit wider, when a few people have signed, they'll be a scrollbar leaving no room for the text!
Menu on the right (light blue on light blue) is not very easy to read. Also, I would pull the text away from the side a little bit.
The greets adder thingy doesn't run.
Neither does the imood.
Try continuing the horizontal background on the left to the edge of the screen. Might look quite nice.
All the backgrounds repeat. You can get rid of this in CSS.
The graphics and all are great, sorry if it looks like I'm whinging, trying to get the best out of you!

Queen is a fine band. I think some of the greatest music out there was written by Rage Against the Machine. When it cam eot shoe-horning in loads of different, well constructed riffs into one song they were the ones to do it. A song like 'Wake Up' would be split by a lesser band into four songs, but not Rage.
Rob Lang
- Wed Sep 25 10:58:01 2002
I like The Strokes a lot, and I guess from an objective point of view Queen are possibly the best band ever... However, In my very narrow minded opinion Turin Brakes are currently the absolute most bestestest. I guess it's partly just the new band syndrome. Older more establishd bands always seem to embark on a systematic process of alienating their fans either by producing really obscure "genre defining" albums (i.e. Radiohead), not producing any more albums at all (i.e. Portishead) or just plain splitting up (that would be Rage Against The Machine). It's just self, self, self with some musicians.

- Wed Sep 25 08:42:14 2002
I just now noticed the message about the greatest band ever. I must weigh in. I've never heard Turin. I've heard some Deftones and somewhat enjoy their tune "Change". However, the band pales in comparison to Depeche Mode (which they cover) and all other bands pale in comparison to Queen. There are, alas, few good new bands...at least in the US. The Strokes is one I can think of.

Well at least it's all fixed now Rob. Sounds liked the sort of thing that would probably flummox me too. I'm currently having trouble with my modem at home, and have to more or less completely reinstall it every time I use it, which is a pain. This is not helped by the really unintuitive settings - I seem to be able to change settings for my modem in about eight different places, sometimes corresponding to the same settings, sometimes different settings that happen to have the same name. By the way, are your other servers/workstations called Mikael, Joseph and Vladimir...? (Does anyone know Lenin's first name?). I wish I owned enough PCs to network them together and have a jovial naming scheme for them. There's not a great deal of point when you've only got two, one of which is about as networkable as a hair dryer, or perhaps even less so. I guess if it's been managed for fridges, it won't be long before hair dryers, vaccuum cleaners and ice cream makers all have IP stacks. Errrr, what was my original point?

No John, it was a case of Boris (house server) was not assigning IPs, so my machine was not getting one and could not log onto the network. By manually setting the IP, I could get onto the network. We then reset Boris and return it to automatic IP setting and it all worked nicely. Boris had been running for over 180 days and had done well. We gave it a rest. For about 10 seconds.

Mugs.
My work mug has been chipped in two place over the last week or so, and all the varnish has gone off it, despite surviving about five years prior to that completely unscathed. Tim: I borrowed a mug from you (not the same one) about five or six years ago for an afternoon. I've still got it. Would you like it back?

Oh, the slag has arisen :) And it was generally thought that as the attacks occurred at (around) 9:11 AM (Eastern Time, where New York is) on 9/11 as we Americans say, that it was all planned, as a sort of mockery or something like that.

I understood what you wrote and I see that I sort of launched into the middle of a thought without any background. One can generally be a Christian and believe in all the ethos that accompany that thought but still be pressed to one's wit's end and then go about killing. One is then loosely a Christian. If Christians don't kill, who were crusaders? Certainly, in 'loose talk', Christians kill.

I heard an American guy yesterday on Radio 4 refer to the events of last year as 9/11. (I guess we would say 11/9 over here right?).. but anyways, 911 is the American emergency service telephone number. This made me think that perhaps that was part of the plan. Then again, probably not.

Travis, I'm not sure if you interpreted what I was saying in the right way - my point was that an individual who kills may say they're a jew, christian, muslim or whatever, but they're not actually. It's like those "vegetarians" that still eat chicken. They may say they're a vegetarian, but they're clearly not in reality. A true follower of an Abrahamic faith (which my father informs me is the catch all term for judaism, christianity and islam) would not kill - it's a principle that is fundamental to all those religions. They all tend to go on the premise that only their god (or Jehovah or Allah) has the right to give life and take life away. I may say I'm an Olympic gold medal winner, but it's clearly untrue. It's a similar black and white issue for me, to say you are a follower of a given religion you really need to follow the rules that religion lays down, at least the really important ones. If you don't, you're lying to everyone, yourself included.

Christians and Muslims don't go around killing people? Then who does? Certainly, in the loose manner of speaking, Christians and Muslims...and humans...do go around killing. If you want to speak in strict terms, then it could be argued that humans do not 'murder' because to do so is irrational and humans are, by definition, rational. In the loose manner of speaking, one might be a Lawyer but that doesn't mean that at every second of one's life he or she is being a lawyer. Ahh, this place needed some American input :)

Oooooh danger of serious conversation. Fundamentalists? Fundamentalist what? They certainly were not muslims, in the same way Oliver Cromwell was not a christian. Christians and Muslims don't go round killing people, it's a fairly basic prerequisite of being either, really.

Don't know if it helps Tom, but there's a big list of software that uses Lame, you can find it

Oh. Does anyone have a decent sound recorder program for Win2K? I'm trying to copy a few albums that I only have on minidisc into WAV for MP3'ing later on.... better still would be straight to MP3. My sound card is OK - SB16 - but not brilliant. Thoughts? I may look at a optical in card if anyone can recommend...

Ooooh internet from home. However, having spent the last year or so with really high speed business type connections, it's a bit of a shock to remember how slow standard modems are. Is there any way I can get better download speeds without shelling out any more readies? I'm just using the standard Freeserve 0845 dialup thingy with a 56k modem at the moment. Do I have any better options?
