Monday in Cambridge
Monday 31st August 2020
Went punting in the morning, which thanks to careful planning on my part coincided exactly with the one spell of good weather during our trip to Cambridge. Lunch by the Cam after that, then got the train back to London in the afternoon.

John's Pictures

08:57:22
The view from our hotel room this morning. Inspiring isn't it?

09:29:11
The view from the hotel's restaurant where we had breakfast. A bit better I suppose.

09:36:30
Breakfast at the Hilton in Cambridge. Considering we'd normally be in Monaco at this time of year, having breakfast out on the terrace overlooking the Mediterranean, this was a rather underwhelming experience.

10:32:27
Taking a morning wander through the streets of Cambridge. How much nicer everything looks with blue sky!

10:33:35

10:34:43

10:36:08

10:37:20

11:06:15
On our punt now.

11:06:40

11:08:49

11:09:07
St John's College.

11:09:11

11:09:21
The Bridge of Sighs.

11:09:47

11:10:19

11:10:39
My favourite thing which doesn't have a word for it - the dappled sunlight on the water's surface reflected onto the underside of a bridge.

11:11:06
The other side of the Bridge of Sighs - note the girls have taken their coats off! I was incredibly pleased with my careful examination of the weather forecast at this point.

11:12:00

11:12:10

11:14:41
Trinity College? I forget.

11:17:46

11:18:41
More dappled reflected light, albeit a much less appealing bridge.

11:19:38

11:21:13
...and more of that magical light. This time another nice bridge.

11:21:15

11:23:28
Lovely views of King's College as we floated past.

11:24:21

11:24:32

11:24:57

11:25:00
I actually quite like the way the bridge partly frames the shot here.

11:29:00
Must be a nice place to live.

11:29:05
Under the mathematical bridge.

11:29:09

11:29:14

11:29:54

11:32:47
I think we turned around here and started heading back.

11:41:23
The library at St John's (?).

11:42:06
Geese.

11:43:49
A bit of a shame about the perspex screen here.

11:44:48
...and again. I had a quick go at punting before our time ended, alas no photos of that on my phone for obvious reasons! However see the end of this page for a couple from Chie's phone.

12:30:28
Off the punt now.

12:32:26
A short wander back through Cambridge as we mulled over what to do for lunch.

12:35:03

12:38:44
King's College Chapel from the other side.

12:40:01

12:53:16
A dead wasp in the window of the Mill. It had been there yesterday as well.

12:56:36
Back to my local in Cambridge, the Mill - we'd decided for lunch, given the ongoing impossibility of actually getting a table anywhere this weekend, that we'd again get takeaway food, and an accompanying drink from The Mill, and sit somewhere nearby to eat.

12:57:13
While the girls went off to get some takeaway food I took on the responsbility of getting drinks and finding a place to sit.

13:00:05

13:05:44

13:07:00
Nice view of The Mill from this angle I thought.

13:11:04

13:41:41
We ended up walking a little way along the Cam to sit and have our lunch, primarily to get away from wasps.

13:43:55
Erika had a burrito and Chie and I had falafel wraps.

13:44:01
The bad side of my hair after my recent terrible DIY haircut on display there.

13:58:00
We bought these from one of Cambridge's many sweet shops earlier.

14:04:44
Also Erika chose this - spray on candy. Essentially just malic acid and citric acid in spray form - as a fan of English sparkling wine where such things are in abundance I found this really intriguing.

14:09:24
The Cam, near where we sat for our picnic, as I headed off to big up our bag, and we headed back to the station.

15:34:57
Back in London, Erika doing the Harry Potter Platform 9 3/4 on the actual platform, which does look quite like how it does in the film.

15:42:43
Also the more tourist friendly Platform 9 3/4 setup next to the Harry Potter shop on the station concourse.

15:42:48

16:33:02
Back at home now, Erika trying on her outfit for tomorrow's visit to the Warner Bros Harry Potter studio tour.

16:33:11

17:52:15
I decided to have some English sparkling *cider* in the evening to round off the bank holiday weekend.

17:52:28

20:42:58
As an addendum (because the timestamps got lost) here's a couple of pictures from Chie's phone of me having a go at punting with a quick bit of tuition from our pilot. I almost look like I know what I'm doing here!

20:42:58
I did end up hitting the side a bit, but at least I didn't fall in!
