Sunday on the South Dorset Ridgeway
Sunday 2nd April 2023
The second half of my walk along the South Dorset Ridgeway, taking in most of the more interesting Bronze Age / Neolithic sites: two long barrows and two stone circles before 9:30AM in the morning!

06:49:42
Not much of a sunrise to be seen this morning as it was a bit cloudy, but did at least get this patch of pink sky in the distance.

06:50:34

06:51:11

06:51:42
Morning coffee before setting off on the remainder of my walk.

06:51:47

07:31:52
On my way now, heading towards the Hardy Monument.

08:13:12
The first Neolithic port of call today: Hell Stone.

08:13:22
This is a dolmen and would originally have formed part of a long barrow.

08:13:37

08:13:58

08:14:11
Here it is from the other side.

08:14:20

08:36:58
Next the Hampton Stone Circle, possiby Bronze Age.

08:37:10

09:04:09
Third in this morning's itinerary of antiquities is Grey Mare and Her Colts, another Neolithic long barrow.

09:04:21

09:04:30

09:04:42

09:23:46
Finally the Kingston Russell stone circle.

09:23:53
It would obviously look a bit more impressive if the stones were stood upright!

09:24:07

09:24:23
...but you hopefully get at least a sense of it.

09:24:30

10:07:32
Not exactly sure where this is, but somewhere near where I ended my walk at Abbotsbury Castle I think.

10:07:36
Yes I think this is the final stretch I did of the ridge to Abbotsbury Castle.

10:16:02

10:48:56
At the (unmarked) bus stop on the B3157 near Abbotsbury Castle, I wasn't sure if a bus would indeed stop here.

11:15:40
Thankfully it did!

11:52:47
At Weymouth now, I thought I'd go and put my foot in the sea before getting the train back to London.

11:52:52

11:53:07
Goodbye from Dorset!
