South Downs: Hassocks to Fulking
Monday 26th August 2019
A fairly randomly planned route today, mainly chosen because I wanted a relatively short train journey and wanted to see what the pub in Fulking was like. It actually turned out to be a very pleasant walk though - despite the heat - and I took in some lesser known paths which turned out to be quite lovely.

10:40:53
Passing through Blackfriars on the train.

12:13:10
South Downs. Good.

12:26:59
On the stretch from Hassocks to Clayton, which is now quite familiar to me.

12:27:06
Zoomed in on the Jack and Jill windmills.

12:37:52
Decided it would make sense to have a quick lunch stop at the Jack and Jill.

12:43:10

13:20:36
Started out heading along New Way Lane out of Clayton.

13:23:43
A very pleasant country lane with some much appreciated shade.

13:24:57
Tried to take a picture of a pheasant in a field.

13:36:51
The vineyard at Little Danny Farm at the base of Wolstonbury Hill (I think it's called Wolstonbury vineyard).

13:37:57
Heading up Wolstonbury Hill.

13:37:59

13:44:20
Better view of Wolstonbury Vineyard from here.

13:44:26

13:45:51
This little path leading up and around Wolstonbury Hill turned out to be absolutely delightful, although I was slightly concerned by the lack of shade.

13:45:56

13:46:09
Having one of those slightly moronic moments of elation I often seem to experience when out walking.

13:46:35
The combination of wild flowers and the view here were just lovely.

13:46:46

13:50:32
The view back to the vineyard in the other direction.

13:51:20

13:52:11

13:53:53

13:54:21

13:54:34
It looked like there were burial mounds or something atop Wolstonbury Hill.

13:58:00
Now heading back down the hill the other side, down this rather steep and at times slightly overgrown path.

14:01:18
A bit like a jungle here!

14:05:05
OK will do.

14:10:08
After crossing the A23. Some sheep.

14:10:43

14:12:20

14:12:37
St. John the Evangelist at Newtimber, whiich seemed to be a church without a village attached.

14:14:10

14:18:02

14:21:34
The ridge of the South Downs in the distance.

14:22:27

14:25:20
On the outskirts of Poynings now.

14:29:39

14:31:14

14:41:44
Another vineyard - I think this is Poynings Grange.

14:42:19
The pleasant little stream / river I followed for a while.

14:42:43

14:44:29

14:47:28

14:47:35

14:49:12

15:00:29
A nice shady spot with a bridge.

15:02:26
On the approach to Fulking now.

15:04:18

15:09:37

15:10:48

15:11:50

15:11:53

15:15:17
Entering Fulking.

15:15:28
A very pretty village.

15:16:04

15:16:53
...and now my destination, the Shepherd and Dog at Fulking.

15:17:07

15:20:33
They were having a beer festival in fact. I didn't stop for long though, managed to get a taxi from here to Brighton then got the train back home from there.

18:44:03
Deprived of the traditional ESW on the train on the way home from the South Downs I decided to have a glass when I got home instead.

18:56:14
Checking up on the tomatoes. Looking promising!

18:57:03
Alas the same cannot be said of this year's grape harvest.
