Erika's Sports Day and Walking the River Fleet
Tuesday 6th July 2021
Took the day off, to go and watch Erika's sports day in the morning, and spent the rest of the day tracing the course of the river Fleet, which runs (mostly underground) from Hampstead Heath to the Thames at Blackfriars.

The church on the corner of Greenwood Place, which apparently the River Fleet runs under (the street that is, not the church).

09:31:02
First glimpse of the River Fleet today down this drain on Greenwood Place.

09:37:36
A drain I had walked past many times before - where College Lane crosses Lady Somerset Road - which I hadn't realised until now had the River Fleet flowing beneath it.

09:45:29
Bizarrely the Fleet runs through a pipe over the railway here, between Churchill Road and Ingestre Road.

10:10:54
Erika's sport's day, which we had to watch from outside the sports arena thing this year, thus the very long distance photos.

10:34:25
The kids were a bit closer later on.

10:40:56
Erika between sports day activities.

11:00:34
Erika about to set off on the 100 metre (?) sprint.

After sports day (quite a short one this year, it was all over before midday), I resumed my tracing of the River Fleet, this time following it south from Kentish Town towards the Thames.

13:15:07
This is Cubitt Street, near King's Cross I think.

13:45:07
Eventually my walk took me to Holborn, and I decided to divert from the course of the Fleet briefly for lunch at Ye Olde Mitre.

13:45:28
Delighted to be back here after a long absence.

13:48:15
Surprisingly I had the alleyway all to myself! My not very nutritious lunch, a veggie sausage roll and a pint of London Pride. Absolutely lovely to sit here for a while.

14:22:09
I also called in at the Seven Stars to see how that was doing. Also very quiet here, and also nice to see the new outdoor seating, plus the new fancy awnings.

14:22:16

14:44:03
I walked passed the Old Bank of England, and was surprised to see a double decker bus in their beer garden.

14:45:47
Middle Temple church.

14:47:25
Middle Temple Hall.

14:47:51

15:04:37
Finally I made it to the Thames...

15:04:50
...but couldn't actually see the point where the Fleet flows into the Thames, as it was covered up by construction work.

15:08:30
Instead I finished off my walk by crossing over the Millenium Bridge.

15:15:54
In the pouring rain.

15:16:48
A quick view of the "beach" at Bankside before getting the train back to Kentish Town from Blackfriars.

19:45:39
Later on, I went and did one final bit of my exploration of the Fleet, to see one of the sources on the heath. Nice sky on the way there.

19:59:54
On arrival on the heath.

20:00:34
The usual view from the bandstand.

20:00:53
Some meadow cranesbill with the bandstand in the background.

20:03:44
The top of Parliament Hill.

20:09:02
Towards the barrow.

20:11:56
Heading towards the woods where the spring is. Tiny bit of the sunset visible here.

20:11:59

20:53:10
I think I just took videos rather than photos whilst at the actual spring. Afterwards I went for a more standard wander across the heath.

20:53:54
London skyline in the distance, from near the barrow.

20:56:56
The barrow nearing dusk.

20:58:36
A branch had fallen off from a beech tree.

21:02:01
Pink fluffy clouds.

21:02:18

21:02:36
The top of Parliament Hill, which I suppose gave me an opportunity to review today's walk.

21:03:28

21:11:29
Heading home now.
