Cerne Abbas
Tuesday 2nd August 2022
The girls headed off to Japan this morning, and in the afternoon I took a train down to Dorchester, then a bus to Cerne Abbas, where I stayed a night ahead of completing my walk along the Wessex Ridgeway.

09:58:23
Seeing the girls off at Leicester Square so I could help them onto the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow with their bags.

09:58:36
The last time the three of us would be together for over a month!

15:41:44
A little later on in the day I got the train down to Dorchester.

15:50:35
Taken from the bus which took me from Dorchester to Cerne Abbas.

16:10:25
The bus went down some very narrow lanes. Also note I had the whole bus to myself!

16:59:56
The Royal Oak, the pub I went to the last time I was in Cerne Abbas, which alas closes on Tuesdays apparently, so I couldn't revisit this time round.

17:42:54
I decided to take an early evening stroll up Giant Hill. Here's a pleasant stream I passed en route.

17:47:56
The famous view of the Cerne Abbas Giant.

17:53:29
...and again with a bottle of the local wine in the foreground.

17:53:48

18:10:10
The view from Giant Hill.

18:30:50
I didn't fancy anything on offer in the local pubs for dinner, so instead decided to cook atop Giant Hill. As I had ice cubes with me (to chill the wine) I scattered a few around the stove as an extra defense against any grass catching fire.

18:44:14
Looks a bit of a mess (meals cooked in billy cans usually do!) but this was actually quite nice - tortelloni with Dorsey Blue Vinny cheese and Hampshire (I think) watercress. A meal I improvised from what was available in the Cerne Abbas village shop, but I thought it rather good.

18:59:18
More views from Giant Hill.

19:01:40
The evening sun and the summer breeze blowing the long grass about.

19:10:16

19:14:04

19:14:57
In this setting, having the local wine (and properly chilled thanks to great efforts on my part) was divine.

19:46:25
I seem to be doing Langham's marketing for them here.

19:46:43

19:47:41
The glass in the boot trick, to stop it falling over.

20:05:29
More views from atop Giant Hill as sunset approached.

20:22:55
My old friend scabious there to keep me company.

20:23:13
I think these shots came out quite nicely.

20:23:21

20:26:04
Not a bad shot of the sunset over the Dorset countryside, in my opinion.

20:31:54

20:33:50
More wild floral interest atop Giant Hill.

20:35:09
The sunset looking a bit like a distant fire here.

21:01:03
Time to be heading back down to the village methinks. Good night scabious!

21:34:50
I thought this door of a house in Cerne Abbas looked rather evocactive. Reminded me a bit of Venice actually.

21:35:07
The Giant Inn, where I went for a night cap, although I think I concluded I preferred the Royal Oak.

22:00:16
Short video, can't actually make out what I was looking at here, but I think I took it to record the sound of the church bells chiming, which was rather atmospheric.
