Turin to Venice
Thursday 14th June 2012
Spent the morning exploring Turin, then after lunch got the train from Turin via Bologna to Venice. Spent the evening on the Giudecca, just South of the main island of Venice.
Turin turns out to be a rather grand and impressive city. This is the Piazza San Carlo, which has two (yes two) churches at its Southern edge.
A rather nice Martini sign in the arcades around Piazza San Carlo.
Chie's having a bicerin here - a chocolatey Turin speciality.
Rather glamorous cafe on the Piazza San Carlo.
I'm a sucker for trams.
Arcades are clearly very much en vogue amongst Turin's architects.
Not sure why they picked this name for a hotel in Turin.
Inside one of Turin's churches.
Turin Cathedral, wherein the shroud is housed (although it's not due to be on display again until 2025 or something).
It was sunny so I had decided to wear my hat today.
I assume lager means something else in Italian?
The fruit and vegetable market in Turin - this was fantastic.
Al Bicerin - famous cafe in Turin.
Inside the shop part of Al Bicerin.
Lunch at a self service place called Brek, which had a nice little courtyard to eat in.
Still wearing my hat.
A sort of lasagne. This was quite pleasant.
Chie and a giant knife and fork.
Rather nice exit to Brek.
The Frecciarossa which would be taking us from Turin to Bologna.
First class - and hardly anyone else on board!
Not quite as comfortable as the TGV, but nearly there.
Passing through Milan.
We were keeping an eye on this screen as the first train was 16 minutes delayed and we only had 15 minutes for our connection. (somehow we still made it).
Not sure why I took a picture of the label in my hat at this point.
Now in the Bologna to Venice train (a Frecciargento rather than a Frecciarossa if I'm not mistaken). Complimentary drinks were served - it seemed an appropriate time of day to enjoy a small glass of prosecco.
Some not-very-good pictures of the Italian countryside between Bologna and Venice.
Now on the bridge across the lagoon to Venice - very excited! (So much so I didn't manage to get the camera in focus at all).
Looks like we're on a boat here.
First glimpse of Venice.
Here's a picture of our hotel for the first night - the Molino Stucky Hilton.
A picture of the shuttle boat timetable for future reference.
Chie waiting for the shuttle boat at Zattere.
Whilst waiting for the shuttle boat we head a very brief explore of the little church square near Zattere.
I think this is one of those canals which was bricked up.
A cruise ship passed by the end of the street - a bit surreal!
At the hotel now, a very dark picture of the room.
Taking a stroll along the waterfront of the Giudecca from our hotel.
I think a lot of the taxi owners live here.
The sun was starting to set.
Snack Bar La Palanca, where we had an aperitif.
Here's me with a Spritz.
Sun setting over Venice.
At dinner at Trattoria do Mori now.
Sunset through the windows of the vaporetto stop.
Not the best pizza of the trip, but the location was spectacular.
The two of us at out table - rather a nice position wouldn't you agree?
Harry's Dolci, a sister restaurant to Harry's Bar is on the Giudecca. We didn't go in though, as I assumed it would be hideously expensive.
Me cleaning my shoes back at the hotel.
In our room.
