Penmaenmawr Stone Circles
Saturday 15th April 2023
Took the train to Penmaenmawr in North Wales, and then walked up into the mountains to see the nearby stone circles and other Neolithic sites.

Tried to get some photos from the train as it went along the north coast of Wales.

Changing trains at Llandudno Junction.

12:05:50
I had a bit of time before the next train at Llandudno Junction so I popped out of the station for a bit to see what I could find in the nearby supermarkets.

13:00:34
At Penmaenmawr now.

13:26:08
Lots of lambs to see on the way up the mountain!

13:26:16

13:26:19
A better photo of a lamb.

13:28:14
Sheep with their lambs on the hillside.

13:28:21

13:52:00
The views starting to open up as I climbed the mountain.

14:04:48
Lovely views but it was a tough climb with a backpack!

14:16:46
More or less at the top now.

14:16:55
Quite pleased to have that climb behind me!

14:21:36
Again, lovely views though.

14:36:33
From atop a local peak named Moelfre, the view towards Anglesey.

14:36:40

14:36:59
The strange facial expression here can be explained by the fact I was staring into the sun.

15:00:17
Lots of wild ponies roaming around here.

15:50:58
More rugged Welsh mountain scenery.

15:51:01

16:08:46
The first of today's "proper" stone circles (i.e. with stones actually standing up still), which was also being visited by a foal.

16:08:50
Lovely.

16:09:05
I rather liked this lesser cousin of the more famous stone circle here.

16:10:53

16:15:34
This is now the more famous stone circle in the area, sometimes called the Druid's Stone Circle.

16:16:20
It's rather impressive but consequently attracts a lot of visitors.

16:16:22
Slightly brooding skies here.

16:16:29

16:16:45

17:02:12
More wild ponies.

17:11:48
The third "proper" stone circle of the day, this one was tiny.

17:44:30
Views out to sea from near the stone circles.

17:57:36
I was in that indecisive period I often get around this time of day on these expeditions, so I had a sit down in this spot for a while and just enjoyed the view.

17:59:41
Some silly photos with a leek for the video thumbnail.

Finally after all the procrastination and messing about I got on with cooking dinner. It was a strange sort of meal - I was hoping to cook something iconically Welsh (Glamorgan sausages perhaps?) but the local supermarkets weren't very good in that regard so instead I cooked some ravioli with (fake) chicken and leeks, the latter being the only tenuously Welsh component.

20:43:31
My tent, discreetly set up next to the lesser of the two main stone circles, once I had satisfied myself it was unlikely anyone else was going to walk past that evening.

20:43:38

20:44:04
Me and the tent and the stone circle.

20:44:33
Same again without the silly snood thing I had put on because it was getting a bit chilly.

20:51:16
...and again with the light in the tent making it look rather cosy.

20:51:49

20:52:26
Looking out to sea with my lit up tent in the foreground.

20:52:37
...an again with Night Sight mode on so it's a bit better lit.

21:07:00
Night time views along the North Wales coast. Good night from Penmaenmawr!
