- Multimedia Professional
I invented the Internet...
Do you remember the first decent sized piece of software you ever wrote? I was sitting here thinking that very thought just now. I had dabbled a bit with some rather awful games - but those aside - the first piece of software I wrote of any real note was my A level project, back when I was 17, in 1994/1995. I recall at the time having a little difficulty explaining what exactly my project was. It was this program which let you create and playback these interactive multimedia presentations. You could create a number of pages, and in each page you could display a mixture of text, pictures and simple animations. You could also put on buttons which let you navigate between pages, in a freeform structure - each page had a name and the button would refer to that. 11 or more years later I find myself working on BML, the Japanese standard for interactive television. I have spent the day thinking about how to abstract a BML display. Basically it is a number of pages made up of text, pictures and simple animations, with buttons for navigation. So you can see my train of thought here - basically I have come full circle haven't I? Then it occurred to me that my project was in fact a form of hypertext. Lo and behold, I invented the web! Albeit after it had already been invented by some other guy at that time. Still though, it was before I had ever used the web ..
- A Poem
Ever striving to bring variety to the 'Maison, I have decided to have a go at a spot of poetry...
The feeling of disappointment is palpable, strong, intense and vibrant, and yet, you have taken me, to such a place of blandness, of banality, and of tedium, such a vaccum of interest, a dearth of any sparkle or joy, that, overcome as I am, with how dull you are, I am not moved to elaborate, not inspired to expound, on the depth of your dreariness. No man should have to bear, the full brunt of your onslaught. If hell is nothingness, a void, bereft of hope, then in the canteen, they'll be serving you: oh retched beast of convenience foods, that which I discovered at Crewe station: cheese and tomato sandwich, with mayonnaise ...

I think the reason that the board/blogs are not working so well is that our hosting company seems to have reduced the timeout for CGI applications - so most of the time the add message script (or the Greymatter scripts) cannot complete before the server kills them off now. This is making it all a bit unusable currently. For some reason it seems they don't impose the same kind of restrictions on ASP based scripts, so probably the only solution to this long term is to replace all the perl on the site with ASP. I guess it'll be down to me to do that then.

- Welcome Watchers

Loads of new drugs! Plus some old 'favourites' :\

After a fashion, and in the stylings of Damon Albarn, 'I got my head checked' on Wednesday. It wasn't very interesting. I'd hoped that neuroscience had taken some exciting leaps and bounds since I last stopped by. Or, at the very least, got a new office.

The doctor affected an air of boredom as I described my day to day agony, but otherwise he barely seemed to acknowledge my presence in the room. So much so that he prescribed me some 'new medication' which, if he'd actually read my notes, he might have noticed I first tried in 2001. But, honestly, after 23 years of 'having my head checked' I've learned not to argue.

The pills, Propranolol Hydrochloride and Tramadol Hydrochloride, are pretty nasty and make me feel like I've got someone pushing my brains into my socks. They're also giving me nightmares. So it's not all bad.

I've recently been catching up on some of the TV greats of the 1980s and 1990s. Most of this week has been devoted to The Tripods, and those tiny white shorts.

Whilst most of last week was given over to Knightmare, and the incredibly bad hair styles of 1980s Britain.

It's always odd when you go back to something you loved as a child. You can sort of see why you loved it, but you can also see that you were actually a bit of a dick. It's bittersweet. Bittersweet, I say.

Someone who's clearly not a dick is The Fonz. He visited Fairfield, my old primary school, this week in an effort to make children embrace literature. That, or to punch the juke box. I forget which.

Quite randomly, on Monday, I got the clippers out and shaved my hair down to a number five all over. What with the impending brain check, the horribly muggy weather and the voices in my head, it seemed like a really good idea. My hair went from six inches to 18mm in the blink of an eye. Magnificent!

Okay, that's clearly enough non sequitur blather for now. I'm off to check if these tablets really do cause 'erectile disfunction'.
- 25mg Sumatriptan

I has migraine!
- Damn Graffiti Applications

I'm watching Green Street, which isn't as bad as I thought it'd be. I figured it might be too big a stretch of the imagination to turn the guy from Queer as Folk and Frodo Baggins into 'football hooligans', but somehow it works. Maybe it's all about the supporting cast? Or is just the blood packs?

I finally put in an insurance claim for my camera. It was a bit of a fight but the nice lady from the Pru eventually agreed to send me a Panasonic FX500. They were originally intent on sending me some crappy point 'n' click affair. However, I stood my ground and eventually made her see my point. After all, I still have to pay an excess of seventy five pounds and I'll probably find the insurance goes up next year. But I'll worry about that when it rolls around.
- ROBOTS!

I was scribbling away on Facebook earlier today when I noticed a competition calling for pictures of robots. Naturally, it was impossible to resist my urges and, shortly thereafter, the above image appeared.

I would've liked to have polished it up a little bit, but my less than state of the art PC simply wasn't up for the task. In fact, after thirty minutes of scribbling I couldn't even draw a curved line! XD

Anyways, I'm sure if you watch the replay you'll notice my machine starts to lag.

- Amatuer Transplants
I'm back home. I spent a few days in London, this time with Jill and Andy and the Amateur Transplants. We went to see them on Monday night and they were utterly great. Offensive as hell, but great all the same.

I would, at this point, love to shower you with photographs of what I've been up to of late. Unfortunately, a can of Diet Coke exploded in my bag on Sunday afternoon and destroyed my camera. Which, I'm sure you can imagine, was a harsh blow indeed.

So, in the stead of those photos, I'll leave you to watch Madame Tutli-Putli:

n__n
- I'd have baked a cake

Sadly I only had my compact camera in my pocket when our guest arrived this evening. Said camera doesn't have an optical zoom so I think you can work out that the general proximity was about four feet. Although when it tried to enter the house we were talking two feet, maybe less.

If the light had been better, or if these jeans weren't so tight, I might have managed a shot of the front end. But for now you'll just have to make do with a 'backdoor special'. With which I'm sure you'll cope.
- Moar Power!

Thanks to Morpeth Mobiles I have a new battery for my iRiver. It arrived this morning and it took about 10 minutes to strip down the player, remove the old 1700mAh battery and install the new 2200mAh. I can't begin to describe how frustrating it's been being tied to a wall socket! Or the sheer joy of sitting in the garden this afternoon without needing to carry around an extension cable. Oh, and it just struck me that I'll be able to use it in the car again. I'd forgotten all about that. It really is full of win!

I also decided to update the firmware while I was about it. Despite the latest version of RockBox stripping away my custom theme, I can more than cope with the new sleek black interface. As an added bonus I can now play Speex files too. Which inevitably means I'll be heading over to Demonoid in a few minutes...

...after I've eaten my poached eggs on toast. Naturally.
- Life Imitates Book

Misty tells Dr. Touchet, “My head always hurts,
but I don’t feel as much pain when I’m painting.”

A line purloined directly from Diary by Chuck Palahniuk. Which he clearly stole from my life.
- It used to be dinosaurs!

Oil. Everyone who has a spare face hole is talking about it. On the most part they're talking about the rising price of fuel and the effect it has on their motoring. Okay, that's fair enough. However, if you take a step back and look at the 'bigger picture' then you might want to consider where else the rising costs of oil might stab at thee.

It's very rare where oil is discussed that people consider its role in the production of power. What's even more disturbing is that the majority of people aren't aware of where or how the energy that they use on a daily basis is produced. Sometimes it infuriates me to the point of distraction when people drone on about how they can't afford to drive to work, the super market or their line dancing classes on a Wednesday night. I can't help but wonder what will happen to these people when it 'clicks' that bigger picture is even grimmer. How will they respond, for example, when they realise that their utility bills will also be affected by the rising costs of oil. Oil is finite. Oil is used heavily in the production of power. The math isn't hard.

If the price of running a car is set to increase then the price of running a home can only follow suit. And, naturally, an increase in the costs of electricity will come at the consumer from many angles. Food, lifestyle, entertainment, schooling... this could be a very long list.

Here in the UK we are set to see the building of at least seven nuclear power stations in the coming years. These have been on the cards for the past ten years and are only just coming to the attention of the general public. Seeing the populous at arms over the proposal of wind turbine farms was nothing compared to their ire over the news of seven such stations. It makes me wonder how they'd react if they knew that in truth it's going to be more like ten. Sure, they can scream and shout their hatred now, but tell them that they can't turn on their lights at night and I think we'd see a very different reaction.

Without wanting to focus too harshly on a desperately grim future, you can already see the effects at play in countries such as Thailand, India and Indonesia. Regular and prolonged black outs have become something to be tolerated on a daily basis. And whilst there have been valiant efforts to generate power using biofuels the results are less than effective; Bill Gates' stock drop being a clear reflection of this.

Regardless, feel free to complain heavily at the rising cost of gasoline. But, remember, if you'd been using public transport all of these years then we might not be in this situation in the first place. And heaven forbid that we bring up the whole walking thing.
- The Gilberts

Stuart and Gemma got married!

The wedding took place at The Priory Barn in Little Wymondley. It was a fantastic affair, in the very literal sense. How else would you go about describing getting married in a 16th century mead hall where the bride and groom are accompanied by music ranging from Top Gun to Predator and Indiana Jones? Oh, and the unlimited bar was also a nice touch.

Here's wishing you all the best for the future. Which includes your imminent honeymoon tour of the United States. On a motorbike...

- About Odd Situations

At the BBQ tonight, I found myself talking to a man about my somewhat unconventional habit of going blind. One of my friends had apparently mentioned something about it and he had quite a few questions. What made the exchange a touch unusual was the fact that he's blind.

His questions were trying to pin down the feeling I get when my sight fails. Having once been a sighted person, he remembers the day that his blindness struck as a pretty horrific event. Therefore, he had a hard time imagining going through the experience more than once.

Having described the typical migraine attack to him, he said that it sounded somewhat familiar. Except, of course, that his sight didn't return. After a slightly awkward pause, he laughed and said 'but at least I got a free dog out of it'.
- Tumor in a Half Shell!

Black Cat has had a tumor growing behind his right ear for the past few months. Originally diagnosed as a mole, the tumor went 'nuclear mutant' today and split off in a mitotic fashion; probably in the hopes of beginning a career as a shadowy super hero. Naturally, to aid it on its way, I flushed it down the toilet. After taking some photos... Naturally.

He's seems totally okay (he's snoring as a matter of fact). I bathed the wound and considered taking further steps to secure it time to heal, but it appears that he's unaware of the whole thing. I guess it's best left that way. Ignorance being bliss and such.

Speaking of bliss. They made a website where people can draw together! In a similar vein to Open Canvas (which Johnny and I played around with a few times) comes iScribble. It's a multi-user chat room where people can draw cocks on other peoples' masterpieces. It's a wonderful thing to sit an watch! n__n

Speaking of! I'm currently sitting and watching The Eye. I'm not sure if I like it as much as Gin Gwai, although, to be fair, I'm only an hour in. As with all things, time will tell.

Wow! Just as I was about to post this, the sky went really black and a thunder storm rolled in; a really powerful one with really heavy sheets of rains. It was just last night that we were talking about my childhood penchant for playing in rain storms and then one comes along! As I type this I'm dripping in thunder water and feeling full of the joys of a long forgotten thrill. No wonder I did it as a child, it feels fantastic! Although now my jeans are all soggy.
- [ REC ]

A Spanish What?

For those of you who don't keep abreast of 'foreign film', you might like to cast your beady wee eyes over a movie called [ REC ].

It's a tale that's best watched without any prior knowledge as per the subject, although the image featured above might be classed 'a bit of a spoiler'. For lots more spoiler type things head over to 'Bloody Disgusting' and read the glowing review.

Having just got back from watching it I'm now going to go and hide under some blankets. Quite a lot of blankets, as it happens.

And not have nightmares.

I hope...

- Big Soul Monkey

My computer keeps dying on me. In the past week I've lost about 30 hours of photoshop work due to hard/soft crashes and BSODs. I always lose myself in my work. It's on account of this that I'm always forgetting to save; thus I lose everything.

I guess it's my own fault. The machine's ancient and it's a distinct case of flogging a dead horse. That said, it's still a little soul destroying when things get eaten.

Childhood Scribble

Early Saturday morning I woke up needing to pee. I was half way across the room before I realised that I couldn't see. The combination of momentary panic and sleep disorientation caused me to slip. Naturally I hit my easel, the only sharp object in the room. I hit it with my face... -___-

Click It Bigger

I was a bit shocked to hear about Mark Speight. I always loved SMart (and I continued to do the 'makes' well into my 'grown-up' years). It's sad that things had to end like this. Poor chap.

Click It Bigger

Sometimes I find myself in the most beautiful of places. Unfortunately it's not always considered 'socially acceptable' to use your camera there.

I don't know how to describe the feeling I get in my head when I see something unconventionally beautiful. I suppose that's why I feel so compelled to capture it; maybe for closer analysis. I also suppose that it all stems from the same bad wiring which causes me to go blind. Go figure.
- A Helping Backhand

Zombie rabbit! Guess it had to happen some time! n_n

Tonight I was unfortunate enough to find myself watching American Idol Gives Back. Don't blame me, I'd stumbled out of the shower and couldn't find the remote. Anyways, I found it all a little... troubling. I'm not going to sit and bitch and moan (much), it was just a little difficult to take it all seriously given the fact that Paula Abdul was draped in diamonds. Diamonds which were probably mined in one of the very the countries they're raising money for. By children of a similar age to those featured in the heart-moving videos.

Sorry, just a thought.

James, Emma, Lily-May and I took a trip to see Andy and Jill this weekend. We did lots of exciting things and saw some drag queens. We also went to the zoo; wherein we saw half a rabbit, a decapitated mouse and an invisible dragon. There was also felching.

Some nice toilet graffiti at Toddington Services.

A nice early start to Saturday. About 5.34am. About.

Have you had your 5cm today?

The zoo! Can anyone guess why I took this photo? Look 'hard'.

Feeding time! Make mine half a bunny rabbit, pls.

God...

I love being a turtle tortoise!

Um. Felching, anyone?

This guy was great.

He'd had excellent model training!

A random canoe near the 'not quite a dragon'.

Wait. Is that a Tardis?

Oh, noes! Shiny balloons... someone cover Lily's eyes!

Bugger! They're coming closer!!

The entrance to the reptile house.

Lily. Don't let the photo fool you! She's a sandwich monster!

The creepy trees which were absorbing the zoo.

End.

Sorry. It's a crocodile thing.

Ah, there's the large purple snake!

Me being impressed by the vegetarian menu...

...very impressed, as it happens.

And the food was even better!

Doctor Who time! Sonics at the ready.

A nice snowy start to Sunday. About 1.2 inches. About.

Almost time to head home.

But perhaps one last game of Elefun before we go?

Just don't expect to win, k.

Oh, and a random photo of me when I was... albino muchly younger

- The Sundog

bigger

I read The Sundog last night before I went to sleep. I had one of those nightmare things I've heard tell of over the years. Don't get me wrong, most of the time I have truly horrible dreams, but I've never before been afraid during one of them. Or utterly shit scared. As the case was.

When I woke up this morning I couldn't help but think how ridiculous the whole thing was.

On a slight tangent, Google told me that The Sundog had been optioned for an IMAX movie. I can't help but wonder if it'd been as soul crushingly terrifying as the version I watched?
- Colour of Magik

bigger

Firstly, I'm annoyed that we don't have Sky One; which means no Colour of Magic.

Secondly, I'm pissed off with the migraine that's been loitering around my grey matter all day. Not even Imigran can kill it.

Thirdly, I'm annoyed that it's so cold. It's currently somewhere between minus three and minus six degrees centigrade and I really need to pee. Getting my junk out in this weather... that's not fun.
- Just a Few Scribbles

bigger

bigger

Last night I dreamt that I found a falcon. It told me that it needed to be taken to a sanctuary. As I carried it, the bird began to peck at my flesh.

When I woke up I found that I'd scratched myself to pieces in my sleep. Deep cuts all over my face, torso and legs. My nose and my left shoulder took the brunt of the damage.

Funny thing, I don't have any nails. I've been painting a lot of late and so I've trimmed my nails down to nothing. After all, paint under the nails is a bugger to remove.
- Making Things Better

I've always loved Photoshop, but there's always been a nagging feeling in the back of my brain that it's not doing exactly what I wanted it to. Today I spent a few hours tweaking things, resulting in this custom brush set. I used it to make the chap featured above. They're much more gritty and pen-like than the usual brush sets. Anyways, I figured you might like to give them a try.

You might also want to try adding the following to bland baked beans:

1 tablespoon of ketchup
6 tablespoons of malt vinegar
1/4 teaspoon of garlic puree
fresh ground black pepper to taste

Much tastiness ensues.

We've been feeding my brother's cat. She's turned into quite the lovable ball of fluff. And she's kinda... special. I've not seen many cats with such an affinity with water. I had to dry her three times last night following her 'adventures in the sink'.

You should play Crayon Physics.

Apparently Zoe Salmon was making an Easter Egg. Although, given the dirty snigger which escaped me, my brain didn't seem to agree.

Are kids today still taught The Gay Way? They certainly were when I was four! Hmmm. My colouring skills astound me.

I'm into the second season of 'Joan of Arcadia' and I'm still in love with the show.

Tis a pity they killed it.
- Putting things on top of other things
Some times I like to pass the time by putting things on top of other things. Here I put a silver ring, a rubber ball and a headphone jack on top of a Blu-Tak person. The Blu-Tak person doesn't look very happy about it, does he. Although that's probably on account of the crocodile.

I found some Easter Eggs in the 'other refrigerator' and I proceeded to eat one. I fear my actions may have started a small war among the people. Perhaps the eggs weren't destined for consumption? Maybe we were just keeping them safe for someone? To be honest, I'm scared to ask.

Some times I like to pass the time by reading books suggested to me by Oprah. One such suggestion was that I should read The Secret. Or, if I was too lazy, I should watch the DVD by the same name. I did both.

The Secret tells of powerful forces within us all. These forces are akin to the great forces which govern the universe. Using our minds to bring these two forces into alignment can achieve great things. It can bring us our every desire.

I set my mind to feeling well. The Secret claims that to achieve physical well-being a person must deny their illness. Refusing to mention it. Refusing to empower it with their energy.

I drew a chap in a top hat. He also appears to be carrying a cane. I suspect that it might be the ghost of the late Fred Astaire.

Jimble and Stu sent my invite to their wedding. It's in the style of an old-fashioned cinema ticket and doesn't have the slightest hint of gold-leaf or curlicues. In my book, this makes them very cool people.

Speaking of. Just when you thought I couldn't get any cooler I go and dig out my Commodore Amiga and start playing Captain Blood on it. And you're all like, 'Woah! Who is that masked man?!'

Things were getting a bit stale around here so I decided to move my furniture around. Not a very exciting event, granted. However, it does mean that the cat gets to sit next to me all day long whilst I pretend to be an artist.

Today he had quite bad gas. Which wasn't full of awesome.

Things are cool. Boxes are also cool. It's only logical, therefore, that putting things in boxes crosses some kinda cosmic boundary of cool. Like when the Power Rangers all join together to make that big robot thing. Although I don't currently have the Power Rangers hanging on my wall. Which is a shame.

The latest offering from Studio Ghibli is Gedo Senki (Tales from Earthsea). Both beautiful and engaging, it does a fine job of bringing Earthsea to the big screen. I'm glad that Ursula Le Guin stood her ground and waited for the right people to come along. If only other authors were as diligent.

Well, that's enough things for now. I would like to tell you about Stephen King's 'The Mist'. I'd also enjoy talking about 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army'. I'd even be tempted to bring up the PC I've been lusting over.

Alas, my Father leaves for Africa in a few hours and I need to get some sleep before the airport run. So I'd better get right on that...
- The 1983 Mental Health Act
MTV: On the "Hostel: Part II" DVD, you've restored a cool scene that has the would-be killers selecting from a wall of weaponry. If you were visiting the Hostel, what would be your weapon of choice?

Eli Roth: Well, it really depends who I'd be killing. ... There are certain weapons that you just think, "God, I wonder what that would do to someone's face!" It also depends how much time I had. If there wasn't a lot of time, I would probably just take a chainsaw and split someone open down the middle, just to see what would happen. Or I would want to do something where you could chop someone's head off to see if they're still conscious and if their eyes could still look at you. What would that moment be like?

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

He's been given the directorial role on the upcoming 'Cell' adaptation. What a waste of a potentially good movie. Still, if we pray hard enough for a speeding bus... you never know.

On a lighter note, I'm set for one month mental health issues. I told my doctor that Amitriptyline is doing a complete fuck over on me. Hence, I stopped taking it last week.

The withdrawal symptoms are pretty grim. They include:

- Random, Unexpected Vomiting
- Never Ending Migraine
- Dizziness
- Complete Inability to Sleep
- Random Mood Fluctuations
- Loss of Feeling in the Hands
- Electrical 'Snaps' Firing in the Brain

I can expect to experience these sensations for at least a month. It's all okay though. My doctor assured me that these are 'perfectly normal' and 'nothing to be worried about'. So the next time I'm going out of my mind at 5am I'll just think of those soothing words... as I pound my head against the wall.

If you're one of the lucky few who are blessed with crippling migraines then my advice would be to steer well clear of Amitriptyline. I can honestly say that it's had no positive effect on my life, or allowed for any control over my spiky brain eels.
- The Other Side

Coming out of a migraine cycle is a terrible place to be. I look like the kind of drug addicts you see on programs made by the BBC. You know the type, posh looking actors with just enough 'muck' and 'grime' to make then look like an Actor playing a part.

I haven't eaten in three days and I've certainly gone down a 'dress size' or two. Sorry, that was uncalled for. I've been forced to watched daytime TV again and my head is full of womany stuff. Ignore it.

But on the upside, I woke up this morning with a mild appetite which has slowly grown into a craving for 'chip shop food'. Which is where I'm heading now.

Mmmm. I just did a Google Image Search and saw mushy peas! Going!!
