Wessex Ridgeway - Tisbury to Maiden Newton - Day One
Saturday 14th - Sunday 15th August 2021
The next instalment of my walk along the Wessex Ridgeway, today from Tisbury to Ibberton Hill, where for a change I tried a proper campsite.

08:12:26
I took an early train from Waterloo toTisbury to resume my walk.

10:03:35
Just before arriving at Tisbury station.

10:03:38
The railway network map made it look like a very long way from Tisbury to Maiden Newton!

10:05:02
Tisbury station.

10:08:55
The railway bridge on the way out of Tisbury.

10:09:11

10:13:02

10:13:48
I initially followed some other footpaths and bridleways for a while before I eventually met up with the Wessex Ridgeway again.

10:18:30
Crossing some fields.

10:20:04

10:25:34

10:33:03
A nice tree lined country lane.

10:35:49
Approaching Old Wardour Castle.

10:38:09

10:39:33

10:42:57
Old Wardour Castle.

10:43:23

10:44:04

10:45:34
The lake next to Old Wardour Castle.

10:45:45
I probably should have stopped to take a proper look around Wardour Castle, but with many miles ahead of me today was keen to press on, so just had a very quick pause at this bench for a sip of water.

10:46:10
A slightly more intact part of Old Wardour Castle.

10:47:03
...and now I had rejoined the Wessex Ridgeway.

10:48:43
Last views of Old Wardour Castle before heading on.

10:49:52
A very hollow tree.

10:52:12

10:54:39
I found this gate quite intriguing.

10:54:49
Presumably some connection to Old Wardour Castle?

10:57:34
That's (new) Wardour Castle in the distance. Doesn't look much like a castle.

10:58:57
Mangelwurzels?

11:02:09
Pale Park Pond.

11:03:06

11:06:40

11:10:43
A nice old gate on the approach into Donhead St Andrew.

11:32:28

11:34:09

11:38:33
Thatched cottage.

11:50:35

12:00:24

12:02:13
I had the sense the farmer perhaps didn't want people to follow this section of the path, leading into Ludwell.

12:04:46
Overgrown paths through corn fields have become a familiar encounter on my walk along the Wessex Ridgeway.

12:08:32
Arriving in Ludwell.

12:09:23
The timing was right, so I stopped for lunch at The Grove Arms.

12:47:43
A pint of badger.

13:13:30

13:14:14

13:15:53
Watercress beds, as I headed out of Ludwell.

13:21:53

13:29:38

13:32:56

13:36:00

13:38:15

13:41:13
I think this bit of woodland is rather oddly titled Elliott's Shed.

13:42:43

13:44:53

13:50:19
I made a planned shortcut here, having decided to just follow the road for a section, rather than the U shaped route the Wessex Ridgeway takes at this point.

13:55:32

14:05:11
The road wasn't too bad, and in hindsight I'm happy with my choice.

14:05:14

14:08:09
Standing straw auction?

14:09:13
More of the road on my shortcut.

14:11:16
Scabious.

14:18:35
I rejoined the Wessex Ridgeway somewhere in the village of Ashmore.

14:19:24
Also Ashmore was the point on the route where I crossed the border from Wiltshire into Dorset.

14:20:34

14:21:47
Caution overhanging thatch. Not a sign you see very often.

14:22:42

14:22:55

14:23:19
Nice old road sign.

14:23:46
The village pond in Ashmore, which apparently is where the name for the village derives from.

14:25:00
To my surprise and delight, although Ashmore didn't have a village shop or a pub, it did have this little vending machine corner.

14:27:32
One sold coffee...

14:30:58
...the other sold cheese!

14:39:27
Beyond Ashmore.

14:52:17
Heading into Ashmore Wood, which was significantly larger than the village.

14:52:25

14:56:16

14:57:35

14:57:39

15:00:34

15:04:01
I had prudently put on my silly hat at this point, as it was a bit sunny.

15:05:33
One thing I noticed once I got into Dorset is that the style of the footpath signs changed.

15:10:38

15:31:20

15:36:48

15:48:05
Hazelnuts.

15:48:54

15:49:04

15:53:12

15:57:51

16:02:38
Field mushroom?

16:09:00

16:14:50

16:27:09
I think this is somewhere near Iwerne Minster.

16:27:12

16:32:00

16:35:10

16:35:13

16:35:53

16:42:08

16:46:22

16:54:52

16:55:14
Strange this village seemed to have two names - either Shroton or Iwerne Courtney.

17:00:32
I would have liked to have stopped off at the pub here, but alas it was one of those country pubs which close for a bit in the afternoon.

17:08:18
Heading out of Iwerne Courtney now.

17:08:21
Heading up Hambledon Hill.

17:23:10
This was a bit of a slog, especially as the sun had got rather strong at this point in the day, but the views from the top of Hambledon Hill were quite nice as a reward.

17:23:18
Views from the top of Hambledon Hill.

17:23:29

17:23:36

17:23:52
I do like trig points. Please excuse the red facedness here.

17:24:27

17:25:31

17:33:04

17:42:58

17:53:34
Hanford House School.

17:59:39

18:06:00

18:13:09
Bridge over the River Stour.

18:14:02

18:14:13

18:21:33
Passing under a dismantled railway on the way into Shillingstone.

18:31:54
On the road in Shillingstone - is this a dead adder?

18:33:37
Quite a steep climb out of Shillingstone up into Eastcombe Wood.

18:35:50

18:39:31

18:47:41
I was a bit out of breath!

18:55:55
At the top of the hill now, and I think most of the climbing for the day done.

19:01:14
From here on the Wessex Ridgeway did actually seem to follow a hilltop ridge.

19:07:59

19:15:19

19:18:52
The sun starting to think about setting already.

19:19:22
Nice skies along this final section of today's walk, although the enjoyment of it was rather hampered by an annoying cloud of flies which seemed to follow me.

19:24:30

19:32:41

19:39:22

19:41:11

19:43:39
Almost at the campsite now...

19:44:41

19:51:00
At my campsite for the night - having anticipated I'd arrive around 8pm, I was impressively on schedule!

19:52:10
To my surprise I had the whole field to myself!

19:57:32
Setting up my pitch.

19:58:43
...while enjoying the sunset from this great vantage point.

20:23:43
Lovely skies this evening.

20:24:04
My little tarp shelter, with a view of the sunset.

20:24:14

20:26:53
A view of my tarp shelter plus bivvy setup from the front.

20:27:20

20:29:25

20:32:33
I went over to the picnic bench to cook dinner, thinking it would be a bit easier having a flat surface.

20:34:20
Some cheese snack things I picked up from the cheese vending machine earlier.

20:34:27
My hipflask of whisky.

20:35:40
...and of course the all important titanium spork.

20:37:35
Video of my campstove and the sunset.

20:39:44

20:40:16

20:42:18
Looking quite pleased with myself for having found such a great spot to camp.

20:44:02
Another camp stove video.

20:55:06
Tonight I was going to have a change from the usual macaroni cheese, and instead try the spicy pasta arrabiata.

20:55:41
I supplemented it with the cheese snack things. Didn't look very appealing but was actually quite tasty.

21:19:23
A couple of last shots of the fading light before turning in for the night.

21:44:24
