New Quilt and Ivinghoe Beacon
Friday 25th November 2022
My new sleeping quilt (like a sleeping bag, but more open) arrived this morning, and I took it out for a trial run with a wild camp near Ivinghoe Beacon this evening.

My new quilt. It's not much to look at but this will hopefully be very warm - rated down to -4 degrees C, and is a bit lighter than my current sleeping bag, plus hopefully more comfortable.

11:30:15
Note from the chap who made it.

11:33:55
In the storage sack it's a bit huge though! Will need to get a compression sack for it.

11:35:41
I also ordered a bivvy bag with it, but didn't try that out tonight.

11:36:28
Showing how big and bulky the quilt is when not compressed.

11:41:00
Nice personal labels.

11:44:10

11:47:42
Comparing the size of this to my standard sleeping bag and my lightweight summer quilt. Massive!

Passing through Hemel Hempstead en route to Tring.

15:18:22
Cutting it a bit fine to arrive before sunset...

15:19:50
Passing through Berkhamsted.

15:42:59
Got to Tring and started hot footing it towards Ivinghoe Beacon, just pausing briefly now and again to catch a few glimpses of the sunset.

In the woods.

15:48:56

15:50:55
Silly pictures of me and the sunset.

15:56:29
I was trying to get a good photo for a thumbnail for the YouTube video you see.

16:00:26
Thus why so many selfies.

16:00:41
There's Ivinghoe Beacon.

16:01:47
I wouldn't make it there in time for sunset (which I think was officially happening almost exactly at this moment) but hopefully there would still be a bit of light left.

17:08:13
Made it to the summit of Ivinghoe Beacon and decided to sit there for a while having a glass of wine.

17:15:52
I hoped I might be able to do some astrophotography but it was a bit windy and the little tripod I brought for my phone wasn't really stable enough.

17:16:31
Anyway, you can just about see some stars here.

17:17:10

19:21:23
Later on, after finding a spot to camp, where I had a little fire to cook dinner.

The billy can on the little twig stove.

19:30:01
I love cooking like this, it's extremely satisfyinng being able to make hot food using just twigs that were lying around on the ground.

20:05:30
Nice bit of steam coming off my diner there.

20:05:35
I was cooking some kind of approximation of a goulash.
