Return to Joy King Lau
Sunday 27th November 2022
I was surprised to discover this morning that out old favourite dim sum haunt Joy King Lau had reopened, albeit under new management, with a different menu. So with a little apprehension we decided to go and try it out for lunch today.

Happy to report the kai lan was more or less as good as it used to be (albeit a lot more expensive now!).

12:48:57
Slightly mixed feelings about being back here - it was kind of the same in some ways, but kind of not in others.

12:48:59
Maybe we just needed to adjust to the new way of things? It felt slightly odd, ever so slightly bittersweet, we were sitting in one of our favourite restaurants nostalgically reminiscing about (what was at least superficially) that same restaurant.

The dough stick cheung fun weren't quite as good as they used to be - the dough sticks inside almost tasted slightly stale. Some old favourites (the vegetarian bean curd rolls) were no longer on the menu, others (like the kai lan) still were, and there were one or two new things.

So overall I would say a bit of a mixed bag. I think we probably would go again though.

After lunch we went for a wander around the centre, and somehow ended up at Neal's Yard.

Chie and Erika went into a shop where they said they'd be spending quite a long time, and suggested I go and sti in the pub for a bit. So I came here to the nik nak filled Cross Keys. I liked the slightly over the top interior, but was a bit disappointed with the beer selection - all craft beer and lager, and only one thing even vaguely like a real ale on tap.

We also bought macarons while we were out, and had them as a sort of afternoon tea when we got home.

My YouTube channel passed 400 subscribers this weekend so I scribbled this thank you note on a wine label.
