Another Work Night Out

Posted on 2005/12/07 13:49:40 (December 2005).

[Tuesday 6th December]
Another work oriented night out to entertain the visiting managers from the US. I attempted to pull out of this one, on account of wanting to see Chie at least one night this week (and also get a decent meal!). However, I failed somewhat in my attempt, and instead was persuaded to bring her along.

We went to a yakitori (grilled chicken) oriented izakaya, so again I didn't really eat. Still, it was nice that Chie could come along, so I guess I shouldn't grumble.

What is it with your colleagues? Don't they understand you are vegetarian? If it's not steak houses in Seattle, it's chicken shacks in Tokyo! How thoughtless and selfish is this!??! Cough!! Sorry.. Rant over!

Thanks Nigel for taking my side on this!

I guess it is just one of those things though. My previous company didn't do a lot of these work oriented nights out, and of course the UK is much more vegetarian friendly - it is rare to find a restaurant back in blighty that doesn't have something I can eat...

So I guess the problem is just as much to do with being out of the UK as it is to do with having colleagues who don't really get the whole vegetarian thing.

Even in a country such as Greece, which considers itself, wrongly or rightly, European in mentality, despite its traditional leaning to the East, the idea of vegetarians is met with raised eyebrows and distrust. Try ordering a main course meal in Greece without meat, and they will still ask you what meat dish you would like to go with it. I myself eat meat, but a very good friend of mine does not, and his frequent visits to Greece are plagued by this problem. He once ordered a vegetarian meal on a flight out of Greece and was served by Olympic Airways with a… ham omelette. Go figure…! :-)
