Nerdy

Posted on 2007/04/22 12:44:08 (April 2007).

[Friday 20th April]
Chie had gone off to see a friend all the way over in Swindon this evening, so I had a quiet night in by myself which was nice as I could have a few hours of unbounded nerdiness without fear of annoying my wife.

I have recently been working on a cross platform replacement for Photo Studio - a program which I've codenamed cheese. It's not really in a state where there's anything to show yet but for anyone who might be interested in using something Photo Studio esque on the Mac (or Windows or even Linux), then watch this space.... but don't hold your breath either, I think it could be a fair while in the making still.

Good work John! What language/stack are you writing cheese in?

Tell me it's not Java.

I'm writing it in C++ using wxWidgets. When I mentioned this at work yesterday the response was somewhat derisive, at which point I asked what is the best library for cross platform development then? Apparently none of them are really any good.

As for Java, there's a reason you hardly ever see GUI apps written in Java.

...and the functionality is going to be extremely limited - I predict about four buttons, and absolutely no UI flare at all. I'm really struggling to find the time/enthusiasm to do anything like this at the moment, so even the tiniest little feature feels like a mammoth effort.

Sounds like it might be in competition with "Grumpy Player" = whatever did happen to that ?

Comment 7

Yes I'm very much following Jimmy's Grumpy software development pattern.

Comment 8

I hope it doesn't end up like that though, Grumpy never saw the light as far as I know... :(
